Need help to get motivated again.

      Hi everyone

I've been into lucid dreaming for about 1 1/2 year or so now, I go though 3 to 4 month periods of heavy interest and its all I think about.......
But!! I then go into a complete can't be arsed mode and I try but don't.

I know it's a shit excuse but my life gets in the way.

So can anyone help me to re-jizz my interest and get me back onto the lucid road.

      Hi there!

I notice that you've so far had about 6 lucid dreams. What kind were they? WILD, DILD?

I've just got back into lucid dreaming too, though the reason I stopped was because I seriously needed to get my sleeping pattern in order. Having lucid dreams is hard work, especially if you're like me and only ever seem to have WILDS. All I can say is have a positive attitude, try out some mantras before sleeping and practice All Day Awareness/Lucid Living and you should start seeing results. What I do, when I'm busy during the day, is just study everything around me while doing what I'm doing and thinking (or saying, if I'm by myself) "I'm dreaming!" over and over for a certain amount of time, followed by a reality check. Even if you do it for 20 minutes or less during the day, it should show some results. I've been doing it for two days and it's already starting to show in my dreams.

My friend told me that it never helps to have doubts because it only sets you up for failure. That's especially vital with mantras, as I've come to learn. I hope I was some help.

@ Hambo - Try to rekindle what sparked your initial interest. Go over your previous LD's what you have had previously.
I think it probably is a good idea to take breaks like you have, there's nothing wrong in that. As Phoenix states LD is hard work. I don't think it does anybody much good doing it 'full-tilt' as it were.
The main problem I find (and have) is the DJ - It takes quite a lot of dedication to build the recall levels up. Half the time I don't feel like writing any kind of notes. Usually what I do is put keywords down instead which helps.
If you don't like writing, you could always use your phone, or recording app?

Try and find a routine which fits into your lifestyle rather than the other way round. If you are busy in the week, then try weekends maybe?

I have practised for a few years now and the first years I tried to find the best method for lucid dreaming, what technique is the best? What bedtime gives the best result? And so on. And well that can't be found, learning to lucid dream is more like learning to play an instrument. Do you need motivation to learn to play a guitar?
Perhaps... But the people who succeed aren't the ones who find the best guitar tutorial on youtube, the people who succeed are the ones who don't give up and learn to enjoy the process they take while learning. What I am trying to say is that motivation should come from the practise itself rather than result and that is how you stay motivated.
Ironically this kind if thinking is what produces the best result.

As a beginner you can't just pick up a guitar and expect to play an awesome guitar solo. Likewise you can't expect to sleep and have a lucid dream just because you read about it on the internet.

The path to success is really easy, however our biggest enemy is ourselves. Our ego is resisting change, because change takes time and energy and your mind don't want to go through that.

So what is the solution? -> Make it fun!

If you walk around all day annoyed that you have to do reality checks well that behavior will be transfered to your dreams and you will probably not perform reality checks, because emotions are amplified in the dreams. But if you intellectually know that reality checks is the road you want to take, then you have to begin a war with your ego. You do that by starting a habit, when you have done something for more than a month every day, it starts to become internalised and be a part of you.

Remember that this goes for bad habits as well, so think about what you do because what you do is what you will become.

So do what you know is right, but only do it if you can enjoy the process.

Also don't take yourself too serriously, if you wake up without having a lucid dream but you still know that you have done the right think, which is to practise some kind of lucid dreaming method, then simply tell yourself that since you have done the right thing and the result is out of your control, it is irrational to feel bad about it.

Trust the process and never give up and you will get there eventually and improve along the way.

Remember you have only failed when you give up, that is within your control and that is what differs people who succeed from people who don't.

      Sweet dreams.

Gladly! I'd love to have more DILDS! WILDS are great and have been the most surreal experience I've ever had, but sometimes they work for me and sometimes they don't. I only had one DILD and I went and messed it up by opening my eyes minutes into it!

Oh, I concur about how raising recall is the toughest thing. Even now, I think my recall is average or good at best and could have a lot more clarity. It's annoying but all I can do is say my mantras, write in my dream journal, and stick to the time I go to bed.

      Thanks for the help guys.

The main way is dild with odd wilds,

my LD count is 9 now, I should really keep my profile up to date .

I am a ada fan I find it keeps my mind active better than a half arsed r/c, I will also dig out my old d/j's, I love the fact when you read them back the dream pops back in your mind like it was happening all over again.

I'm going to kick back tonight! Read up and get my mind set. I 100% agree about the staying positive.

      Thanks again.

Lucid dreaming is one of those hobbies one can do on a low budget or free while one has a busy life etc, but one of the few prerequisites that are absolutely essential to success is motivation. If you do not have the motivation, you will not succeed in this hobby. Unfortunately the amount of effort and time it takes for some of us means that motivation is likely to fade over time if one does not have enough successes. In my case, what I then did was to redefine success: I started focusing for a while on some of the side effects of lucid dream practice, such as improved memory and improved awareness in waking life, and a more positive attitude over all. That helped me get through the time of low success with redirected motivation which nonetheless continued to be related to the lucid dreaming goal. Recently I have started to finally see some results (2 LDs this week - woo hoo!), and motivation is easier once the successes happen, but one will not get successes unless one stays motivated somehow even during the times of patience. I found also that particupating in an LD competition on DV really helped me stay motivated. Also you could set goals for yourself, for example the goal of improving your dream recall to at least two dreams remembered every night, and reward yourself at the end of the week if you achieved your goal.

Good work for the 2 LD's this week, I think a good push, ADA and a bit of positive motivation should get me back on track.

Is kinda hard to motivate yourself, I go through phases when I am addicted to being lucid, others when I would rather just crash out and be unconscious. I find watching dream related films, reading a good book, listening to mysterious music all help put me in the mood. You can't fake wanting something though and sometimes you can wear yourself out from trying too hard, so just ask yourself what really matters to you. Remember just how much you can do in a dream!

I woke this morning with a big jump in recall, all written down my my DJ. I feel like I've hit the start of a positive run.

      Thanks for everyone's help.

Remember that your experience is totally within your control. In fact it's too much in our control than what we can handle, which is why we screw ourselves over from time to time. Just like a lucid dream. So like Gandhi said:

Keep your THOUGHTS positive because your thoughts become your WORDS.
Keep your WORDS positive because your words become your BEHAVIOR.
Keep your BEHAVIOR positive because your behavior becomes your HABITS.
Keep your HABITS positive because your habits become your VALUES.
Keep your VALUES positive because your values become your DESTINY.

And as you can see I like to read wise men's quotes because wise people got the experience that we do not yet have and they can explain what we need to do to get our own.

In my opinion, motivation is a great feeling but very unreliable.

Usually what happens is you watch a video or read something then your like "YEAH I'M GOING TO WORK OUT EVERYDAY, NOTHING CAN STOP ME!", then after a few days your like "Eh, I'm just going to go back to old habits.".

What you need is discipline, you need to be willing to work toward things in your life if you want lasting and worthwhile things, so just keep doing what you need to do and keep a positive attitude. There is going to be times where it doesn't feel worth it or you don't feel like it, but you got to eat through that pile of shit.

^^^This is how I go through life and I feel this is a very good way of doing things.

      Good luck Bro!

I've found that having a goal to accomplish during a lucid dream really gives a boost to my motivation. Also, adding new goals really seems to help me. I find that I've been more successful on the first night of adopting a new goal instead of focusing on missed goals.

Just knowing that I can do anything I want in a world I create is enough motivation for me to continue.
