I'd have to lean towards this being less useful. It's not likely you will see the dot and become lucid from a reality check.
Your hand by default has no dot on it, so the likelihood of there being a dot in a dream is slim until you put a lot of time into this technique. Also, you rarely have a reason to really look at your hands, in waking it is likely that the dot catches your eye and then you reality check as a result of your attention being drawn, but a dream is not likely to produce something unusual at the edge of your perception that you mean to implant there.
Still though, on the upside, there are no wasted RC's, and you use your hands enough to really make this keep RC's on the front of your mind and that's a good thing (so long as you aren't doing so many that they become meaningless) If this technique helps you increase your all day awareness then there is no downside.
