[Beginner] - failing reality check lead to awakening instead of lucidity

Hi, beginner here with some lucid dreams ten years ago.
It happens (like it happened ten years ago) that I very easily start to reality check in the dreams but instead of becoming lucid I wake up. I sometimes had false awakenings instead of lucidity either. Part of the process?
I'm in my first week so I guess that I can't really complain (had also lucid dreams in one week ten years ago).

      Thanks in advance!

Try setting an intention ( goal in a sense ) of instant stabilization and grounding yourself to the dream environment and into your dream body once getting lucid. Spin, crawl, touch your dream body and move around a bit touching things, watching things close-up and initiating your dream senses. If you still find yourself waking up, let it happen and do a reality check as soon as you find yourself on your bed/ anywhere else. Also I think that once you have the possible false awakening and you catch it, you will stop the past experience-expectation based( " I have usually woken up as soon as I become lucid" ) waking up. The FA and scene change is going to be a fresh start if you fail to stabilize the dream at first.

And yeah I think FAs are a sign of process. It might mean that you're starting to notice it more often when the dream is nearing it's end ( your awareness is becoming more higher at the later parts of the REM-cycle than before ) and you're semi lucidly expecting to wake up, so you continue the dream but with a new theme of waking up.

Thanks for the answer Saizaphod! It doesn't give me the answer for my problem but I find it very useful in any case.
I probably didn't explain myself well enough.

I don't wake up immediately after becoming lucid; I wake up and immediately realize that I failed a reality check. dream, rc failed, awake, without the lucidity stage in the middle.

Oh. Well you're only a week into the practice. Maybe it was just a one-two time thing. It's probably not going to happen that often anymore either now that you're becoming more skilled.

So, are you saying you perform an RC but it doesn't get you lucid?

Precisely. When I think "it's a dream!" I'm already awake.

Saizaphod, indeed I'm not very worried. I'm just curious if other users had the same problem and if they did something in particular to solve it.

Thread moved to Attaining Lucidity per OP's request and due to the nature of the thread itself
