      Rolling over

Last night, I repeated a mantra in my head for about 40 minutes, hoping to DILD after I fell asleep.

For a while, my arms and shoulders had been getting sore. They would then get really cold, and then hot. After a while, it spread to my back. In my arms, it was uncomfortable but bearable. It really hurt by the time it spread to my back, and I rolled over, hoping to make it stop. I sat there for about another hour or two, and eventually fell asleep. I didn't get lucid.

So, my question is, if I move after repeating my mantra, does it lose its effectiveness? Should I just lie there until the cycle of tossing and turning stops, and then do my mantra?

Also, what was happening to my arms/back?

What you are attempting is the MILD, and for me, moving around to get comfortable does nothing to impair the MILDs effectiveness. As long as lucidity is in your brain, and the confidence that you will become lucid when you fall asleep, then nothing else matters as much. Just be dwelling on your dreams as you drift off.

You should try to be as comfortable as possible when you MILD or use autosuggestion like that. You want to fall asleep pretty quickly, so lie in whatever position you normally use to fall asleep.

There is a big difference between MILD and WILD. In a MILD, you are just trying to remind yourself to become lucid as you fall asleep. The idea is to remind yourself of lucid dreaming and imagining yourself becoming lucid as you fall asleep. In a WILD, you are trying to get yourself into a trance-like state and hold onto some awareness as you pass directly into a dream. It sounds like you were doing a hybrid of the two, which just ended up keeping you awake way too long.
