For the sake of entertaining the idea, perhaps a way shared dreaming could be possible is related to how Tesla was about to discover how to harness electricity from the air itself. The earth has a large electromagnetic field, humans and other living beings also generate electromagnetic field. I doubt I'm the first to come up with the idea, but the manipulation and interaction between these fields could provide the means of some form of connection between otherwise "separate" objects. If consciousness and matter are a result of electricity, currents can definitely join other circuits of electricity. How else are we able to harness energy? The grounds for the possibility are there, the way you get them to interact is the mystery, especially over varying distances.
There is also the matter of everything being able to move as a result of vibrations, and gravity and other forces being a result of varying density and thus things exist in layers. If things are equally dense, and they exist on the same layer, can they form a circuit, regardless of distance? Or can they connect within certain distances? The reason we fall "down" in air is because we are more dense that the atoms that make it up. For the same reason, we float in water, and we cannot pass through the earth. If consciousness were able to form a close enough bond, get on the same vibrational "wavelength", could they simply meld together and form a single circuit? Is it always a single circuit, and it is simply shared by other layers of similar density, that wind up closing off the circuit into a confined area (our minds)? Is there a way for this density barrier to be overcome that we are not aware of?
If you look at the concept of dark matter, it is simply matter that is small enough (read: less massive and therefore a different density) that it can simply slip in between what we know as matter, which is of a different density. Could consciousness be part of this dark matter? We can't "see" consciousness just like we cannot see dark matter, but we know it exists because the effect it has on matter we are actually aware of, just like we know consciousness exists because we perceive it and exist.
