    Lucid #222: The Australian Odyssey

I’m standing in line with my friends SC and MR along with some other people that I false remember as people from my past. I’m trying to introduce these “old friends” but it’s hopeless because I can’t even remember their names. Very embarrassing, and to my relief the line moves ahead and we walk into a large video arcade.

SC, MR, and I watch this one game for a while that’s a cross between a sandbox-style game, a racing game, and a platformer. I get confused after a while and wander to another part of the arcade, when some creep elbows me aside and then flicks me on the back. The creep stares at me as he walks by with a “what are you gonna do about it?” look. He’s a short little guy with a mustache. “You’re short,” I observe out loud.

This enrages him, and he charges at me, taking an unbelievably slow swing at my head. I push him gently aside and he falls to the floor. “Stop it,” I tell him. “I don’t want to get arrested.” I move away from him down a hallway but he chases me down and tries to hit me again. I scoop up his right ankle and he falls backward to the floor.

I say, “I’m not hurting you because I don’t think you can hurt me.” As I’m walking away I start doing some pondering out loud: “But… what if you try to hit me 5000 more times? Wouldn't all of that practice make you dangerous to me?” Convinced by the dream logic, I pick up a toddler-sized chair and say, “Next time, I’m going to hit you with this chair! In the face!” I shake the chair for emphasis. He ignores my warnings and again comes charging for me. I smash the chair into the center of his forehead and he crumples to the ground.

I walk off down the hall, hoping nobody saw me do that. Something about all this strikes me as completely crazy and
I become lucid. I walk down a long hallway lined with school lockers, and at the end I find a dirt ramp leading downward. I follow the tunnel downward into a large temple built with big stone blocks. There are gaps in the stonework near the high ceiling and shafts of sunlight cut across the room from above.

It’s a beautiful place and I begin slowly flying around the room, overcome with joy to be lucid. “Fucking lucidity!” I say, feeling like I might cry with emotion. After flying around for a bit, I walk outside of the temple to find myself in a Venice-like city of canals. A few boats drift gently by.

I look back at the temple and see a large, golden statue of an angel sliding down a ramp from the ceiling to the door right in front of me. From somewhere a voice says, “Although we recognize Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we believe this church is powered by the Holy Spirit.” I get the sense that the voice is trying to explain what they use for electricity. After admiring the statue for a few moments, I step into one of the boats and set off.

It’s not long before I find myself at the edge of the city, heading out to sea. I get the feeling that I’m in Australia and the beauty of the story and the scenery eventually
drain away my lucidity. Dreamer starts narrating: “Parts of Australia are dirty, polluted, and not as nice as you might think.” As she says this, I notice oily water lapping against the side of the boat.

I set sail away from the city, staying close to the shoreline, Dreamer narrating here and there. The water is clear and beautiful now. Dreamer says that I’m trying to find my way to the islands of the “Hawthorne Formation” but I don’t know my way there. The sea is calm and I feel peaceful and relaxed. Eventually my boat lands on a sandy beach where Noah Bennet from Heroes is working at a carpentry table. I think he’s my dad and that he’s counting on me making this journey to the Hawthorne Formation to get help for my mom and sister. (100% false memories and characters.)

“Son,” he says, “draw me a map of where you think you are.” I draw a globe on a piece of plywood and sketch out Australia. I think it looks pretty good until I see all of the lines of longitude converging in its center. I realize that I’ve put Australia where Antarctica is supposed to go and feel really embarrassed.

Noah Bennet sighs. “Here’s the Hawthorne Formation,” he says, drawing a series of 4 islands off the southwestern coast of Australia.” He draws an arrow pointing northeast into the middle of these islands.

I thank him and return to the boat. “Good luck, son,” he says, and
    the dream fades.

Nice dream Canis! Shame you couldn't keep up the lucidity; you seemed to be quite happy
overcome with joy to be lucid. “Fucking lucidity!” I say, feeling like I might cry with emotion.
This is my new signature on the forums
Joking aside though I get what you mean, I really do. The feeling of becoming lucid doesn't fail to amaze me every and each single time.

This reminds me of a commercial. "This program has been brought to you by...The Holy Spirit! #1 in powering your churches since forever!"

Cool dream! I've been to a temple before while lucid myself. I have a DJ entry about it somewhere in the depths of my journal...

@Kaenthem - Ha ha, I'm digging the "new sig"! I'm glad it's not just me. Lucidity just feels amazing, plus I'm way more prone to extreme emotions in dreams!

Keeps me coming back for more! =)

@Krista - Ha ha, thanks! Ooh, cool, I'd love to check out that temple dream. I did a real quick tag-search on your DJ for "temple" but that came up dry. If you ever happen to run across it I'd love to check it out.

Hopefully in your temple dream you kept your emotions together better than I did mine.

Ah that emotion. Reason #1001 why we love this stuff. Really amazing LD man. Fucking lucidty for the win!!!

Thanks, dude! You've got that right. It feels amazing to just be carried away on crazy emotions like that, ha ha... I know that's not proper dream yoga but sometimes I don't event want to tame that sense of wildness you find in dream emotions.

      To many more!

Congrats on an awesome lucid with very cool dreamscapes!! I would love to visit that place! The latter non-lucid part was a good example of how NLDs can be very interesting as well!

Awww, this is such a beautiful dream, congrats! Totally loved reading about it and could well imagine how awesome it felt being there. So the temple how did it look, like Greek/Roman type of architecture or more like a church?

The part with the aggressive DC was very funny to read. Were you going for an ld with a wbtb or was this a natural unexpected ld? I have a little theory that on some occasions it may be easier to get lucid due to elevated neurotransmitter levels during normal sleep.

@fogelbise - Thanks fogelbise! Yeah, I felt lucky to be there and reacted really strongly to it in the moment, too. The cool thing is that since you're an LDer, you too get to visit places like this and you don't even have to wait for a vacation day to roll around.

@Nyx - Thanks, Nyx, I'm glad you had fun reading it! It was a very cool place.

I would describe the temple as actually looking even more ancient, borrowing from Egyptian and Babylonian construction a bit. The stones were a bit larger and rougher-cut than Greek construction and the color was a little more tan, not quite like the limestone or marble of Greece. It definitely didn't look like a church and I had no notion of it being one until the disembodied voice game me that theological update. =)

Yeah I don't know why that guy wouldn't leave me alone, ha ha. This lucid hit after a moderate WBTB (long enough to journal) and some fairly relaxed ssild cycles. Ooh, does your theory go into how I might take advantage of this?

Egyptian/Babylonian temple! That must have looked really cool! I remember parts of some very Egypt ancient type of non-lds from long time ago (maybe past life lol!) and they were quite interesting, although some parts of the series were a bit creepy - there was something going on in a dark tomb/quarry going deep into the rocks.

Ah, the good old SSILD .

Well, the first step is to recognise that this happens - you can try paying more attention to your awareness during the day as a practice and examine your dream awareness upon wake and you will notice there are differences. The next step, once you know such moments of higher awareness (which I relate to neurotransmitter levels) is to be confident they will come and expect to catch them much like dream signs. Some can be related to dream signs actually. I will post and elaborate a bit more about it soon. If you practice those two steps consistenly and with mindfulness then you will be able to have more ld moments.

Oh those sound cool! Are these dreams that are anywhere on DV that maybe I've just forgotten about? The part about the evil, lurking presence deep in the quarry sounds like the start of a pretty cool story actually.

Oh wow, these weren't just some idle thoughts you were sharing! You've got a very, very plausible framework here.

I mean, it makes sense... if neurotransmitters affect our mood, outlook, mental abilities, etc. it makes sense that we will feel differently in those moments. And why not train ourselves to wake up in the dream precisely when we're best suited to do so.

That's really clever, actually. It's one of those ideas that's an "of course!" kind of thing once you hear it, but I'd never considered anything like it! Great thinking! Let me know if you have more thoughts in this area.

Sorry I'm so late to catch up on this!

There are so many things I love about this dream!
The epic fight scene, the hilarious dream logic, the moments of embarrassment, and of course my cameo.

      Congrats on another awesome dream.
      Fucking lucidity!

Ha ha, thanks, that fight sure felt epic and intense at the time. Then you wake up and realize you beat up some short, slow DC in an arcade.

Your cameo and narration were awesome! I wish that my memory had perfectly preserved more lines, but the one I included should be 100% accurate. I woke up still able to "hear" it. And the voice/accent seemed perfect too! Although I guess my judgment is suspect given the noises I produce when attempting to accent myself, ha ha...

And hooooly cow, a purple version of the famous Dreamer Chair! Fucking lucidity indeed!

Haha yeah, I purpled it when I purple/greened our team smileys!
I figured it wasn't really Dreamer if it wasn't purple.

Your voice recorded version of this DJ entry may be my favourite yet! Love the Australian accent attempt for my line!
      Keep them coming!

That's great, I love the purpled version! Is that tedious to do for so many frames?

Ha ha, all I can say for the Australian accent attempt is... I meant well. HA ha ha... even though I have mostly action-oriented plans for the next LDs, I will try to remember to speak to you more so you can "enjoy" more of these attempts to switch back and forth between accents.

Heh, a little tedious, but I used actions in Photoshop to make the process quicker. Someone should add those smileys so we don't have to copy them from imgur every time.

Ooooh boy, I can't wait for the next instalment!
I'll record you some stuff really soon, promise!

No, I don't think I even have them on paper. It's one of those old dreams you just remember. It's interesting how some dreams make it to permanent memory without much thought on your part, while you have to journal and review the rest.

Thanks. I still need to improve on this technique - more experiments to conduct. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to additionally boost the awareness in those special moments and extend lucidity all over REMs. If you have any ideas that come to mind, let me know.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! Even though I try to at least scratch out notes about most of my dreams, there are some that just stick in your brain because the setting or dream plot or something really grips you. And some, of course, are super boring dreams that take place in meetings. Those, thankfully, kind of fade away on their own!

My very immature theory is that a lot of it's down to belief and expectation. If you believe those moments will come and your prospective memory is expecting them, I think that's half the battle! Just getting used to even looking in the first place.

I am going to start making this part of my daytime practices over the next few days and see how it goes! Let me know if you have any hints as to how you've approached this!

I think you got the part with the expectations pretty correct. I just had another idea or rather recalled this thought about incubating something dream specific to pop up in dreams and remind you to become lucid, like a special dream object.

Best of luck with your day practices. You know, there are so many things I can actually do to boost lding, but for shame I end up doing almost none of them. Need to work on that.

Very much agreed! Something Dreamer and I have been noticing with the DV member challenge is that your partner can become quite a reliable dreamsign. Every NLD point that you earn in that competition is a dreamsign that could be converted into an LD! We've been trying to crank up the RCing accordingly!
