    Happier!

This is an interesting lucid that happened about 40 minutes or so after first falling asleep. These are very unusual for me! Also had a much more nightmarish start than most of my lucids.

    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #247: Happier!

I’m standing by my pool, which looks distressingly green and nasty. While I’m stressing out about how this happened, a large snake comes slithering out of the pool toward me. “Whoa, are you kidding me?” I shout, running a few feet away toward a stone wall that’s about eight feet high. I scramble up to the top before the snake can get me. I notice that this felt easier than it should have, and I become lucid.

I let go of the wall and float away, my feet rotating gently upward until I’m lying on my back, looking up at the sky. I’m in some kind of miniature canyon, and the green water is now just a calm pond rather than my pool. I fly down toward the only exit, which seems to lead into a cave.

The cave interior is well-lit but feels sinister. The walls are stained red as if they’re covered with blood and strange growls echo off of the walls. Further down the slope I see dim, hulking figures shambling through the fog. I think that they look like zombies. I remember that I want to summon Dreamer but I want to wait until the environment becomes more pleasant.

I walk further down the slope and a huge, crazed-looking man with a black beard charges at me, his hands outstretched for my throat. That’s not real, I think, and I feel only a dull impact as he passes through me. Out loud, I say to Dreamer, “I know you’re here with me. I’ll call you in soon.” (I still don't want to call her in while the dream's still going all horror show on me.)

Another crazed figure charges me, decayed flesh hanging off of his face. Yuck! Why is this dream trying to be so scary? I turn away, knownig that he’ll pass right through me, and he does. I emerge from the cave into a large tiled room that looks like an industrial kitchen. About a dozen or so zombies are in here, rising up from the floor, shambling forward, and then collapsing with a sigh into a heap of bones. Then the cycle begins again. It’s gruesome to look at and I really want to fix it.

I decide that the zombies and I are all going to sing together! I come up with some song where the chorus goes, “Happier! Happier! Happierrrrrrrr!!” I belt it out with all I’ve got, and the zombies join in with me. Each cycle they look more and more normal, until after about 30-40 seconds, all of the zombies are now blond guys wearing shades, suits, and sporting 80s looking haircuts.

I keep singing with these guys for a while, really enjoying the turnaround of this dream. I realize that I should think about other goals, and as I’m making my way into the next room, the dream thins out
    and fades.

Excellent lesson on how to avoid a LD escalating into a lucid nightmare!

Thanks, dreambh, I appreciate that! I hope that I'm able to remember to always push things in this less confrontational direction... I really enjoy the results of it so much more than ending up in some big, silly fight. In the past it's been hard for me to choose the correct path in the moment, but hopefully I'm forming some better habits now!

Wow, that singing idea was ingenious! A chorus of singing zombies? What a turnaround!
I'm glad you were so confident and didn't let this dream get the better of you.

How very chivalrous of you to spare my delicate eyes from witnessing the horror show!
Maybe I could've worked some of my magic (positive energy and/or judo throws) on those bloodthirsty villains! I've got your back!

Sounds like you're turning into me, having a lucid dream so early in the night!
I wonder whether it just happened by chance or if you did something differently this night... can you think of anything?

Thanks! I was really pleased that this came to me. Giant DC musical numbers are still just an occasional thing for me, but they are so much fun! It was especially nice in this case because I felt pretty disturbed by how persistently these dark themes were hanging around when I really didn't want them.

This is totally true! I really could have used a buddy! If I'd been thinking clearly I think I'd have realized at the very least that I could piggyback on your positivity to start steering things in a more positive direction. Or even more wonderfully, you could have joined in to sing with us! =D

And failing that, there are always the awesome judo throws!

This is a great question and I've been wondering the same thing myself. I wish that I could come up with a coherent reason beyond just going to sleep with a strong intent to look for the dream and become lucid. I wonder whether something could have also made me sleep just a little bit more lightly...? When I woke up from these dreams I had the sense of being much more alert than I'd normally be waking up 30-45 minutes after falling asleep. But that could be a consequence of just LDing.

How about you? Did you ever figure out what might have been behind it for you? Hmm, I'm very interested in hearing the answer to this, so I'm going to listify this question right now.

The cure for zombism is happiness. Those walking dead guys have it all wrong. I would have loved the creepiness of this dream but great turn around and self control!

Ha ha, it was there all along! Although I have to admit that Walking Dead would be a much less exciting show if Rick Grimes solved problems the same way I did here.

Well I don't know Bad Lip Reading did a good job of it. "Let's get to it... We're on Broadway.... I once knew a kid whos tongue fell off in his sleep... Libibby libitty bibbity doo."

Was this your inspiration? "The Walking (And Talking) Dead"

Oh, that was an awesome terrible dream, quite in the mood for Halloween too. Good job allowing all those nasty DCs to phase through, this a very good defence strategy in case contact seems imminent.

I also liked how you completely took over the mood with your singing. I know we all prefer nice dreams but if we are faced with a challenging dream and rise to the occasion like you did, then it was all worth it. Plus, it's a great example for others, both newbies and the rest.

@Xanous - LOL. I've never seen that, but it's great. You're right, Rick Grimes' reactions are priceless.

@NyxCC - Thanks so much! I'm always pleased when I remember to take this approach and turn things back around in a pleasant direction again. It can be so hard to remember, but I hope that the right kind of habits are just maybe starting to form with enough practice.

Plus, singing dreams are just always cool!
