I have had trouble recalling in the last couple days. Is it a good idea to wake yourself up during the REM peroid by setting an alarm. And when I go to sleep if find it hard to set an alarm, because I fall asleep at different lengths of time depending on how active my mind is. I am keeping a dream joournal but the last couple days have been blank because I haven't been remember any dreams. Even when I try to wake myself during the REM period. Does anyone have any suggestions on better recall

Your last REM period usually lasts less than two hours. If you set an alarm two or two and a half hours earlier than usual and then get up, and do something to wake up a bit before falling back asleep, your morning REM period will be a bit more vivid.
I've had trouble falling asleep before and usually I find that it's because I won't let my mind wander. When you try to control the direction of your thoughts as you try to fall asleep you will usually keep yourself up. If you can get in a habit of going to sleep at a certain time and sleeping for a certain amount of time then the REM periods will become more regular and maybe you can pay closer attention to them.
Also when you wake from a dream make sure you write it down RIGHT THEN. Even if you don't remember the story you can put down feelings and such. Once I wasn't remembering for a while and I just put down two or three words and sometimes a full sentance. After a week of that I was up to a page.

Haha, yeah I have this problem too, I sometimes set an alarm for a hour and a half for when im asleep, sometimes I find myself awake when the alarm is going off (sometimes it takes a while for me to sleep).

Setting an alarm seems to destroy my dreams. I think just because it irritates me.
I've found that other, lower frequency noises will let me know that I am dreaming without waking me up completely.
Ocean sounds, a familiar song, something that you can recognise in both worlds as a trigger will make you aware in your dreams if your practice them often enough.
Then again, need to here industrial noise music to become aware.
Pick something close to you and relevant to your life. :P
I like video game music. I play it and then start to dream about a familiar game, then I find myself inside...that was fun lucid dreaming.
good luck
