View Full Version : 5 Ways to Fail at WILD

Oky Doky first off let me explain the brilliant reason im doing this: I'm bored :D (and of course im a nice guy :rolllaugh: )
Also if there's anything incorrect, inaccurate or if you want to add another "way to fail", I hereby allow you to post :D .

Anyhu, lets get started.

Way No.1: Not being relaxed/Being stressed.
If you've had a hard days work or just have something on your mind, nagging at you, then its probably a good idea to try solve the problem, or if not possible, try spend more time in the relaxation stage before attempting a WILD. Reason is: your not going to be able to get a good or constant level of concentration, which, of course, is needed to enter the later stages of a WILD.

Way No.2: Talking to yourself(in your head).
Again this falls under the category of concentrating; the mind needs to be almost blank to enter the deep stages. To achieve this, use techniques like concentrating on your breathing or an object in your head. You'll find that concentrating on one thing for a period of time is actually much harder than it sounds. Having said you should concentrate, I have to warn you not to over-concentrate(ie. Putting all your efforts and mindpower into the task) as this can prohibit you from falling asleep. From all the resources on WILDs I have read on the internet, not one has ever specifically mentioned this, resulting in me staying awake for up to 60-80 minutes before(Silly me). Do try concentrate but also try to relax on the effort if that makes sense.

Way No.3: Fear.
Fear is probably the most common cause of a failed WILD attempt. Even though you've probably heard people telling newer members that there's no reason to be afraid, they too were probably afraid at first. I was startled and afraid the first time too. It's a new experience and you have to get used to it. But trust me, if you can shake away that fear(which will shake itself away anyway after a few times anyway) it should be a fun ride through the vibrations. Theres absoloutely nothing solid behind the fear, its just a fear of the unknown.

Way No.4: Using a technique that doesn't suit you.
When I was starting WILDs I made the mistake of using techniques that weren't suited towards me. For example I used to use a technique involving focusing on hypnagogic imagery when I could never even see hypnagogic imagery. In fact I've never seen hypnagogic imagery or experienced sleep paralysis for that matter to this date! And yeah, I know...Im weird. I know it's harder than it sounds, but try to find a technique that suits you.

Way No.5: Having a distracting environment.
I don't remember how many times I've been trying to WILD when my little brother or sister run into my room and start pounding me silly(I know they love me) or when a football suddenly bangs off my window and jolts me awake. Try to choose a time where you wont be disturbed during your attempt, and maybe don't attempt if there is a good chance you will be distracted or woken as it may frustrate you. Also as a subnote, make sure your not hungry, thirsty or need to go to the toilet before you attempt.

I'm sure there's more but I'm in a hurry to go to my summer house in a minute or so, so good luck and have a nice summer. :aphiusiscrazy: :muffin:

Cya soon.

Way No.2: Talking to yourself(in your head).

Ack! You got to be kidding me. It was easy for me to coach myself during the process. It helped me to stay focused. Besides, It is so hard to keep your mind blank. You will always have thoughts popping in.

But yes--concentrating too much can indeed wake you

Way No.4: Using a technique that doesn't suit you.

So true. I found that laying on my back isn't comfortable though many sites say to do this. But also I notice that yes you don't experience all the steps like hypnagogic imagery too. I guess it is different for different people.

Nice work AllInYourHead. Thanks for the tips!

This is good stuff!

Though I do have to agree with Dew Dust re: talking to yourself. I do agree that during the initial (pre-vibration) stages, I eventually get tired of the "1... I am dreaming... 2... I am dreaming..." routine and just start counting, but once the vibrations start, some self-coaching can go a long way. You can start saying you're dreaming... or you can say things like "pull me in" or "I can handle whatever you throw at me" to boost confidence and to calm down.

This is good stuff however I never had a problem with initating a WILD while talking to myself making preperations.. But I know everyone does have thier own technique that works best for them and what may work for the next person may not work for you.

whenever i try to wild or go into a dreamstate purposely i always end up opening my eyes a little bit then i have to kind of force them shut

i think this is messing me up

should i just let my eyes kinda open (they dont seem to open all the way but enough that they let in light)

or should i keep forcing them closed

or should i buy a sleeping mask?

i think i know the sensation u speak of. when it happens to me i force them shut. i think if u just keep forcing them shut until u dream then u should be ok once u get in. not that i would have any idea about getting in yet though....if i had a sleep mask i would use it. i guess u could tie a sock, prefferably a clean one, to your face with a string or maybe a large rubberband. give that a whirl man

Hey AllInYourHead,

Thank's for the tips :D . I also can't see hypnagogic imagery and never experienced sleep paralysis, so I'll talk less to myself and cocentrate in my breath while trying to WILD and see what happens.

I fail at WILD sometimes because the vibrations cause me to get an erection lol! Then I can't concentrate...

Hey thanks for that mate. I was really interested in the part about you not looking at HI... I think I'm in the same boat too. I hardly ever see HI, and when I do it isn't very clear at all, I think that maybe I should concentrate on sounds and stuff. Seeing as you don't concentrate on HI, how do you WILD? Do you simply leave your mind blank, like in meditation?

question: are u supposed to see HI and hear HS before your eyes REM? cuz my eyes just suddonly start REMing in my WILDs

I actually wasn't aware that you could WILD without experiencing sleep paralysis, because when I WILD the vibrations I feel actually are the onset of sleep paralysis. After I go into sleep paralysis, I either wake up or slip into a dream within a matter of seconds.

I'm not sure when most people try to WILD, but it only works for me when I nap or try it late in the morning after a night of sleep. I've been having more trouble doing it recently, because I think I'm doing it when I'm too tired, so I just end up falling asleep.
