It's been my experience after working in the veterinary field, that people LOVE to talk about their pets! Dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, you name it. Animals give people a reason to get up in the morning, and someone to greet them when they get home. I have a lot of elderly clients who only keep going in life because they have their pet to care for (and many of them will take their pet to the vet before they will go to the doctor themselves!).

So what I want to know is:

How many pets do you have?

What kind? What are their names?

And what are some things that make your pet unique?

Do you have any funny pet stories?

I have two dogs. One is named Leonard, the other Karl. One thing that makes Leonard special is that he can whisper. It's a trick that is kind of like the 'speak' command, but it is much softer, like a low growl. Karl is unique because he looks really mean, although he isn't really. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/GwenCinnamon/Karl3.jpg

I have a cat, called Herman ^__^

He's a bit small and a total wussie. Just about everything scares him... he has his weet moments too however... like when you feed him he is not so un-social all of a sudden :)

We used to have a different cat, but that one wondered how the bottom of a car-tire looked like. :(

I'm sorry to hear about your car-tire cat. Some cats just demand to go outside and won't be happy otherwise, but I've got my cats brainwashed - they are terrified of the outsdoors! I can leave the door wide open when I'm bringing in groceries or whatever, and they'll just sit there and look outside, but they won't go near the threshold.

Where did Herman come from? Was he a stray? He may be skittish because of his past (I know it sounds like kitty-psychiatry). Sometimes, they just need longer to be able to trust you. But it sounds like he comes out of his shell when you feed him! :) I would try bribing him with food or treats - play with him or teach him a few basic commands using food. Cats aren't as eager to please as dogs, but you can still teach tricks if you find somehow to relate to the cat (in your case - food)! :-P

My friend and I have a snapping turtle. Its only a few inches long; head to toe he's about 5 to 6in. He eats 20 small goldfish a week. His aquarium includes many living plants and logs to camouflage him while he hunts. I also buy ghost shrimp; they help clean up the algae but also provide a good snack for the turtle if he can catch one. We have named him Jack Bowser. Jack as in Jack Bauer from 24; the turtle pulls some sick moves and is totally bad ass like Jack. And Bowser from Mario Party, which used to play a lot. I'll try to get some pics.

I'd love to see some pics - snapping turtles are very cool looking. And I like the history behind his name!

Bruno is so cute! Goldens are the ultimate gentle, family dog. They have wonderful personalities. Okay, I'll try to pronounce the rabbits name phoenetically... "Snow-t-gee"?? Well, it was worth a try!

Here are my two cats:

Cloud is a platinum point Tonkinese and is 3 years old. He plays fetch, and loves to follow us around and be carried around.

Titus is a regular tabby cat who I rescued from the clinic I work at. He's also 3 years old and he constantly talks all day long. In this picture, he's laying on the quilt my grandma made for me.

I have two cats. One is a big fat Russian Blue named Dante and the other is a Tabby named Nelly (who looks just like your Tabby, but bigger). My tabby, Nelly, does the same as yours. He talks all day long. He wakes me up in the middle of the night and will respond when I talk to him. He is really cute, but it gets irritating when I try to sleep sometimes.) He doesn't really meow though, it is this weird....I don't even know how to describe it.

yay... and when you talk, he listens (espeacially when you say: "rondje lopen?" (something like: "wanna go for a walk?") and sometimes he answers... or i think he does :|
also: when i come home from school, he comes to me to get my keys... (of course... he only does that for his dogcookie :| )

but they're not always nice:
he can sometimes be in this frenzy, BUT when he bites and you say something like "ouch" (errr(!)) or: goddamnit!
he's like "omg omg omg, sorry sorry sorry" *licklicklick*

and you pronounce it more like: sn- errrr... i have no idea... - t- i have no idea
right... english sucks... dutch rullezzzz

We got him off these people that just had like 8 brand new pussycats :) He kind of grew up in their huge backyard. However we live rather close to alot of fast moving headlights (cars) so we rather not let him go outside... So maybe he got a little paranoid that way or something..

lol teach him stuff... mhhh don't know what to teach him. 'being more social in general' is kind of a hard trick to teach isn't it? ^__^

Well, you could teach him to come when he's called when he hears his name. Call his name, and if he starts walking toward you, reward him with a treat. Then praise him and pet him (if he likes it). Keep doing this with positive reinforcement a few times a day. Doing this sort of exercise will not only teach him to learn his name, but he'll become more social from the interaction as well.

I have a dog named Danny. I didn't name him after myself he was already called that when I got him. He is a small west highland white terrier. He is very playful and loves attention, he is also a very tolerant dog, my mam is a child minder so he sometimes has to entertain the kids. Poor thing. He never bites, even when being playful he wont bite. He hates the sound that the blind in the bathroom makes, he has learned to bark whenever he hears someone say they are going in the shower.

I used to have a rabbit, but it died of age sometime last year :( . He was called Jack, he was playfull, he would play fetch and actually throw things back by picking it up in his mouth then using his front legs to kick it back. A cat tried to pounce on him once, but he noticed it and kicked it with his back legs, it cleared the fence  .

I've had quite a few pets over the years, birds, guinnee pigs, hamsters, rats, 2 more dogs, a chipmunk and a garden pond full of tiny little fish.

Well, I guess the little Westie called Danny was meant to live at your house (since you both have the same name!). It's nice that he's good with kids - a daycare is the ultimate way of teaching dogs or cats to be good around children (except some kids can be too rough for them).

And I love that the rabbit kicked the cat's ass! LOL

I have a big ginger mog called Arnie - as in "I'll be back"... Although hes the softest daftest thing and not a Terminator at all. Im off sick recovering from an op at the mo and hes always by my side. I wish I knew more about computers then I could put a picture up like you guys do. I was looking at the pic of Titus the cat and hes so gorgeous. I work part time in a cattery and we get all sorts of beautiful cats. We get Maine Coons, but theyre a bit aloof. Out of all the breeds, chocolate burmese are the soppiest. They climb on your shoulder and purr in your ear.

I'm glad Arnie is there to help you recooperate - animals are great healers!

Titus appreciates the compliment - he's a big camera ham and loves posing for photos.

My other cat, Cloud, is a Tonkinese, which is a Siamese/Burmese cross. So he has a lot of those Burmese traits you mentioned. He's not happy unless we're carrying him around, and if he's on the floor and you're standing up, he will leap straight up into the air for you to catch him and hold him! What a character! :-P

Sorry to hear about Sparky - what happened to him? Why was he in a cage with a doberman?

I agree that most mutt-dogs have a more even temperment than most pure-breeds. Instead of all the good and bad characteristics of a pure-bred, with a mutt you get mostly all the positive characteristics of a variety of breeds rolled into one. They make the best pets usually, and it feels good to rescue a mutt.

They are so cute! I have a particular soft spot for kitties since I work at a cat-only hospital. From the picture, they all look like males - except maybe the flame point cat in the middle could be female... Let me know! I always like trying to guess the sex just by looking at them. Anyway, sorry to create another pet post - I must not have been around for the other ones, or missed them somehow. Thanks for posting that picture, anyway - very sweet. :)

I have 4 dogs but my husband says that one doesn't count as a whole dog as she's only 5 pounds..

Brianna is a 13 year old Bichon Frise.
Bijoux is a 1 year old Bichon Frise.
Bishop is a 6 month old Bichon Frise.. notice a pattern here??
and..
Jasmine a 6 month old MaltiPoo... (hey they can't all be Bichons whose names begin with a "B"). :D

Funny pet stories.. well, I got Bijoux as a companion for Brianna whose sister died last year and she can't stand him!!
After he continually tried to "ride" her around the room, she would look at me as if to say
"Look, I'm too old for this nonsense and I could have happily lived out the rest of my days ALONE!"

They are ALL fixed now and the one they fear most is Jasmine (she may be small but she don't take no sh*t!)! LOL!!

This is my 'Bloggie the Cat' Story. as an intro, Bloggie is a feral cat from one of my outdoor feral feeding stations. Bloggie and her daughter Kitcat are the first ferals that I have been able to socialize to the point where I can pick them up and kiss them without worrying of getting my lips ripped off. But that was well after the events of this following story:

Bloggie’s Story: Her Near Death Experience

I don’t know where they came from. Or maybe I do. Several years back there had been a small kink-tailed cross-eyed Siamese female, a real nervous thing, whom I called Tailtail. The last I saw of her was when she was pregnant. I had always assumed that she must have died while giving birth and that her litter died with her. But perhaps she just moved further down the road, and when things became crowded down there, some of her kittens wondered back in my direction.

They were mixed Siamese. One was almost white and so I called her Whitey, which after a few weeks came to be more like Whoggie, and the other was more blotchy and so I called her Blotchy but after a few weeks it was more like Bloggie.

Oh, they were mean kitties, very disruptive at the feeding stations. Charging in hissing and spitting and driving the other cats away… yes, a lot the same way as Tailtail had behaved. Anyway, I adjusted the feeding stations somewhat… moving around the piles of food and was able to soon accommodate everybody, including Whoggie and Bloggie.

They soon knew how important I was to the operation and they tracked me down to my apartment. Oh, this allows me to make this one observation. When one first makes the acquaintance of a Feral Cat they require a great deal of distance in order to feel safe. About a stone’s throw when one first meets a cat. But as the relationship continues and they are not harmed in any way, then they are comfortable in allowing you to get closer. One can use this phenomena in order to regulate the Feeding Stations, as one can block out the more recent arrivals by simply standing there, while the more established kitties can walk past to go to the feeding stations. But up on the Apartment Balconies the comfort distance can be problematic. Although the walkway is 4 feet wide, if the cats comfort distance is seven feet, then it can’t go around and needs to find another stairway at the other end of the building. So, here I often use communication and compromise. I tell them ‘okay, okay’ and then I face the wall and close my eyes, blocking them with my hands. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn’t. But both Bloggie and Whoggie were as smart as they were mean, and when I opened my eyes, I found they had darted past. You know, keeping such a great distance is as inconvenient for them as it is for me, and so as they find that I am no immediate threat to their life and limb, then they soon settle to the point where they only wish to keep out of my direct reach. Well, except for a few of the kitties that have know me all their lives and or a few Tomcats who are exceptionally brave who allow me to give them a welcoming thump or two.

Whoggie was actually meaner than Bloggie. There last days as mean little kittens went by quickly and they became mean little sexually active young female adults and became pregnant. Bloggie got a little bit bigger, but Whoggie became huge. Then one day Whoggie stopped coming around. They do go into hiding for awhile when they finally have their litters, but after a few days they come around for a much needed bite to eat. But Whoggie never re-appeared, like Tailtail before. But Bloggie continued to report to both Feeding Station One and Feeding Station Two, to eat a little something, but more it seemed to disrupt things. I actually started bringing a squirt bottle to control her, which worked for about a week before she realized that the water was not exactly killing her.

Then one day I noticed that although she was following me from one Station to the other, she was eating at neither. I at first thought that she was taking a nibble but eating the bulk of the food throughout the day – not very likely for a girl that usually would eat like a little pig, but it was possible, as a few of the cats eat only a little at a time, being confident that the food won’t immediately disappear. But then, after a few days of this odd behavior I noticed that Bloggie, coming when she heard my Wild Animal Call, inadvertently fell over into a ditch. And I laughed. I didn’t like her and was happy to see her trip and fall. But then my brow creased and it occurred to me that she could not possibly be okay. A cat of her athleticism and intelligence – the same cat that would dash in front of me on a narrow balcony because I turned my back and closed my eyes, this same cat would never trip into a ditch. So I approached her and saw that her mouth was partially open and that her chin dripped with saliva. Oh my God, it was a haunting reminder of when the first family cat of my youth had come home with her jaw broken. I would have taken her to the Animal Hospital, but you need to remember, that these cats are Ferals. One cannot just reach down and pick them up. They are wild animals and they make it one of their most important priorities to stay out of human reach. So I didn’t even consider trying to catch Bloggie. Heck! Just the last week I was squirting her with a water bottle… she was not going to let me get close enough to grab her. And then, that mean little thing, well, she frightens me. She’d tear me apart!

Anyway, that particular predisposition probably blinded me somewhat to the actual details of the situation. First, she was beginning to follow me everywhere, even as she weakened from her inability to eat. And she was following closely. I simply didn’t notice that she had drastically closed in her comfort distance.

But though I was being particularly blunt in my capacity to observe, her proximity was doing a great deal to erode my dislike for her. It is hard to hate a cat that walks at your side.

Anyway, it had been a week since I noticed the problem, and it could have been longer, and she was getting emaciated and weak. I honestly thought she had only a day or two left to live. So it was late afternoon and I thought of her and decided to clear my schedule and go outside… she would be just outside the door and so she would not be hard to find… and I would sit with her and try to make her last hours a bit more pleasant. So I went out and she followed me to this nice secluded log in a peaceful little jungle arbor and I began to sing her a simple kitty song – the “I Love You, You’re So Good” song (you can guess the words). Then it occurred to me. I saw the light of the situation. There she was sitting at my feet. Close enough to touch. And she was so weak, it was a real possibility that she could die in the next five minutes. Of course, I could catch her. I looked at my watch and saw I could get her to the Animal Hospital before closing if I didn’t waste a moment. “Wait her”, I told her. And went back to my apartment and grabbed a Snake Stick I had fashioned out of a broom handle and a kitty leash, and the cage. I clumsily missed the first several passes but it seemed like Bloggie was as determined to be caught as I was to catch her and she almost forced her own little head into the noose so that we would not be late for Hospital Check In.

I had to leave her overnight, but I was there bright and early the next morning, and the Doctor saw me and called me over. She had already looked Bloggie over, and before I could begin conjecturing about broken jaws or poisonings, she reached into her lab-coat pocket and pulled out this little package and shock out this small object and said, “Maybe this bone caught in her teeth may have had something to do with her not being able to eat.” I was so happy! But the Doctor was puzzled that Bloggie hadn’t begun to eat yet. But Bloggie was being given intravenous fluids and she supposed Bloggie’s appetite would soon return. Well, I left to go shopping and told the Doctor I would be back later, when a thought occurred to me and I did a U-turn in traffic and was back in the Hospital Offices within a few minutes. I told the Doctor to “Watch this”. I let out my less loud version of my Wild Animal Call, and threw a handful of kibble on the floor of Bloggie’s cage and she jumped up and began wolfing it down. I told the Doctor that feral cats don’t know what food dishes are and so Bloggie didn’t even know food was in her cage, not with all of the hospital smells masking the odor of food she had never eaten before. I had volunteered with this Doctor before with socialization cases and quarantines which lends some context to what she said. She said, “Now I know why those cats like you so much.” I had been stupid throughout this entire situation, so I was glad that my brain had finally kicked in.

But Bloggie would stay in the Hospital for a few more days. While we had her, we would let her get some of her strength back, and then spay her. As I told about earlier, with Bloggie in the Hospital, her kittens that I had not even known about came out of the Jungle to find her, but that would be their story. Bloggie would recover, first into a healthy and svelte Siamese with a body quality almost worthy of a show cat (while nothing could ever be done for her ‘blotchy’ coat). But now, she is maturing to the point where she is actually a little on the side of being radiantly plump.

You know, looking back over the entire story of her Near Death Experience, it occurs to me to wonder how she seemed to know that I was in a position of being able to help her. I had been hostile to her, and she had been feeding at my stations not so much as a welcome guest but more with the consciousness of being a raider and a thief. But when she needed help, she camped out at my door and became my shadow. Have the Domestic Felines been symbiotically related to the Human Species for so long now, that it has become part of their instincts to go to People when they need help? It would seem so.

Pets eh? Well here on the farm we have:

26,000 Poll Merino sheep

3,000 head of Murray Grey cattle

2,500 head of Angus cattle

and five dogs :D

The sheep are outrageous, we shear em every year and produce wool so fine you could knit your underwear from it, recently won first prize in the ultra-fine wool section of the Australian Fleece competition. Sheep are simply they best, no arguments.

The cattle... welll... they're nice. They make me hungry when I look at them, they're curious but seem to take great delight in smashing things to pieces... "oh look, here's a water trough with no water in it, maybe if we wreck it it might give us some water". I don't have much to do with the cattle, prefer working with sheep but I had to help out calf-marking a while ago. The Murray Grey cattle aren't too much trouble, a little stubborn but the Angus... well the only way to describe em is Mad Bastards... try being in a five metre square pen with an Angus mother while you try and seperate her calf NOT FUN. I was in the race trying to hunt up all the calves and they took great delight in kicking the shit out of me, makes you wonder why you bother somtimes, but we were cutting off their balls so I guess they were getting their own back.

As for the dogs we've got four work-dogs and one fat black lab house dog that does nothing but catch mice. One of the work dogs is retired now which is kinda sad cuz she still wants to go to work and chase sheep around all day (a dog's paradise) but she's getting too old and we're gunna have to shoot her soon. In the meantime she gets to sleep inside by the fire hehe.

Best bit about the farm is the sheep, I love working with em and helping out with shearing and the smell of wool etc... growing up on the farm with so many animals gives you a different perspective of life though, you see animals being born and animals dying which kind of grounds you I guess. We eat mutton from the farm which means we kill and cut up the sheep etc all ourselves which is much different from just buying it from the supermarket in gladwrap, but I'm glad for it.

As for the names of the sheep and cattle, I couldn't honestly tell you off the top of my head haha. 8)

I loved reading your feral cat story. It was really good, and really well written. Anyway, there used to be a few feral cats that came around our place when my Grandmother lived here. There was a big lady cat that my Grandma named Baby. Eventually, she became pregnant and her kittens would come up with her to eat the food my grandmother sat out for them. She always sat food out for a number of creatures, including a skunk family, a momma and baby raccoon amoung other things. Eventually, these cats became acclimated to my Grandmother through a tedious coaxing process much like the one you described. One day, Baby dissapeared, along with her kittens, except one. The kitten, who was used to my grandmother, continued to come up without her mother and siblings, and eventually it occured to my Grandma that perhaps the cat would do better with a home. Though the kitten was used to being around my Grandmother, it was apparently not used to being caught and kept. Eventually, though it turned out to be a good housecat for my Uncle, who named her Buzz. She has beautiful long multi-colored fur, is one of the smartest cats that I have ever seen and is actually a good housecat.

Anyway, thank you for your story Leo. It was very interesting.

Leo, I'm so impressed. First off, most people don't even know what "feral" means. Secondly, most people would never take a feral cat to the hospital for treatment (well, some do, but expect not to have to pay for it). Your story was so touching. I love how Bloggie knew she could trust you and you could help her, even though she was feral. People need to give cats more credit - they think they're stupid, but cats are so intuitive - I hear so many incrediable stories where I work.

So does Bloggie live with you now? Is she still feral? Thanks again for posting that story, Leo.

I miss my cat. In the summer of 2004 we moved to a new house in a different part of town and could not keep our pets. Our dog, Amy, we put down, but she was a black lab mutt and was having hip problems anyway, so we thought it wouldn't be fair to her to have her continue living on in pain.

My cat, however, Monica, lives at my former boyfriend's house, so I can still see her when I come home on vacation. As with all cats, she has a very defined personality and I love her to death! She can be relatively tempramental, though. When she wants to be pet she'll stick with you until you pick her up and pet her, but when she's done, she's done and will walk away. She makes me smile and I really need to scan a more recent photo of her. Here's one from several years ago, though, and she hasn't changed too much.

She's very pretty. Unique tortie-point coloring. Sorry you don't get to see her very much - it's very sad to have to give up a pet. About 5 years ago, I had a black cat that I adopted from the humane society that I had to give to a friend because the apartment I was moving into wouldn't allow pets. I tried to sneak her in, but the maintenance men came into the apartment when I wasn't home one day and found her. They told the manager and I had to get rid of her. I don't understand why some places won't allow pets. Small kids do more damage to houses than pets do!

You know, since I told that story, I've been think about how it was that Bloggie knew she could trust me and that I might be able to help her.

It might be because, of all the creatures in the Jungle, I was the only one that was standing up to her and doing things. She really was a mean and nasty, overly aggressive thing, and I was the only one trying to impress her otherwise. And I was the guy bringing the food. I was the guy who would call out in the morning with the Wild Animal Call that would even wake up the roosters and the cocks, and bring all of the other ferals running. I was the Jungle Alpha. I was the only being in her World that could possibly help.

Her real intuition was that she could change me from Enemy to Friend simply by appealing to me. Afterall, I am no Saint Francis. I quite treated her like an intruder... though I did add to the rations once she became a regular.

She is still mean. Her behavior toward her daughter is atrocious. When I brought Kitcat home from the Vet, Bloggie smelled the scent of Medicine on her and refused to recognize her as her own. But I wouldn't stand for it. Every time I caught Bloggie aggressing against her own daughter, I've give her a 'yowl' myself and thump her hard enough to know she's been thumped. She is so mean herself that she accepts a degree of meaness from me without thinking twice. I can swat Bloggie for being mean, and then 10 seconds later pick her up and kiss her -- to her it is all in a day's work. Indeed, as I have consistently stepped in to defend the other cats at the feeding station, Bloggie has become something less aggressive. And regarding her own daughter, now though Bloggie may push and shove, she keeps her claws in and Kitcat doesn't even bother to avoid her Mother -- they are always side by side. They look nothing alike. Bloggie is a blotchie Siamese, and Kitcat is a Red Oriental Spotted Tabby. At the feeding station they have their own 'table' -- I set them up a cinder block which I pour their food on and they eat shoulder to shoulder.

When I wake in the morning, I am met at my door by either Bloggie or Kitcat, but most the time by both of them. Today I gave them a special looking over, and it occurred to me that they are both now about the same size. Bloggie did only have one litter of kittens before I had her 'fixed'... so the mother is not much older than the daughter, and will grow old together being an odd pair of 'best friends'. Bloggie may appear to be aggressive, but now I suspect it isn't much more than 'play'. It even make me laugh sometimes. The other week, Bloggie jumped on her daughters back and put a 'headlock' on her and rode her into the jungle, up on her back... only putting a foot down now and then to maintain balance. Indeed, the interactions have probably been more for Kitcat's benefit. Since she is so accustomed to fielding her own Mean Mother's constant attacks, she is quite at ease with any other Cat in the Jungle. Bloggie the mother is so mean, that if Kitcat is not afraid of her own Mother, well, she is not afraid of anything. And they are both superbly athletic -- a joy to behold.

I would bring Kitcat indoors, but I already have a full house. 4 Cats indoors, and the Politics has only just stabilized. Bringing in a new cat would only set the Politics boiling over again.

A few years ago I had brought in a Feral. Sweeeepeeee -- a silver grey spotted Oriental Tabby. A very gentle and sweet breed (high pitch voice) they love other cats and other cats love them. A mother Spotted Tabby is always willing to adopt motherless kittens, where many of the other breeds are loath to becoming surrogates. But Spotted Tabbies are simply sweet and caring. So, as troublesome as Cat Politics can be in a Multi-cat Household, all the cats get along with Sweeeepeeee the Spotted Oriental Tabby who had once been a Feral.

It was sort of love at first sight with that Sweeeepeeee. I had owned Oriental Spotted Tabbies before and loved the Breed. Then one day I saw this Spotted Kitten up on the dumpster. She was a little Spotted Vision of Loveliness. I never suspected she would ever become one of my indoor cats.

Watching her maturing into a Domestic has been interesting. Picking her up, kissing her, watching her get closer and closer to me while we just sit around. Seeing her ask for more frequent 'quality times' -- it goes slowly, but every month, every year, she is more domestic.

I took her in, with misgivings about her being a Feral, because she was so sweet... and because it was obvious that she was in love with me. She worshipped me. Not only would she wait at my door, but she would follow me around, even if it meant leaving her food behind. She would try to imitate my 'Wild Animal Call', even with her thin high spotted tabby voice. And she was so beautiful a specimen. I had lost a few ferals, and didn't want to lose her, and at the time, there was still room in my house for another cat. She got along well with the other ferals, and the other ferals got along with her, and I suspected my Calico would have the same attitude. It did surprise me that she choose to stay indoors. Some Ferals will plant themselves at the door and demand to go out. She did, once. I let her out. But the next morning she came back in and never wanted out again.

I had gotten her fixed only after she had gone into HEAT. Oh... this was how much the other cats liked her. The Toms that she knew from the Feeding Station when she was a kitten growing up all liked her. Ordinarily, when a dominant and aggressive Tom comes into the territory, the other Toms will let them have their way. Well, that was what they were doing when this one big powerful Tom, I called him 'Languor' came and grabbed hold of Sweeeepeeee by her scruff. Well, all of her friends had been gentle with her, and had let her eat food and drink during the feeding times. But Languor was ignoring the feeding station and was dragging Sweeeepeeee off very roughly. Well, unlike anything I had ever read about in any of the books or seen with my own eyes, all of Sweeeepeeee's Tomcat Friends together interceded for Sweeeepeeee so she could come and eat during feeding time. I had never seen consideration before from Tomcats during a Time in Heat, but there it was -- Tomcats being Gentlemen for Sweeeepeeee.

Well, I was concerned about her having kittens. You know, if an areas gets too many 'boony cats' as the natives call them, and if they are perceived as a nuisance, then there can be a purge with outsiders coming in to 'thin the population'. Well, Sweeeepeeee loved me so much, she was always within reach. So it occurred to me to throw a towel over her head, grab her and put her in a cage. Then when I got her home, I had a choice.... let her go in the house, or let her go outside. I choose the House. She wanted to make the choice herself, and so after insisting I let her go ... to exercise her Free Will, the next morning she came back in.

And she still does love me. The other more domestic cats sit in my lap and crowd me when I am watching TV. But they have all conceded to Sweeeepeeee the Cardboard Box Bed that I have put up on my bed for the Cat that gets to sleep with me -- and that is Sweeeepeeee. At night, when I get up and brush my teeth and get in my bedcloths, she begins to run and dance around -- thrilled with the onset of her favorite evening ritual, she'll jump up on her Quality Time Box on the Bed and rub her mouth on the box's corners -- those subtle scent glands -- and expect her five minutes of being petted, stroked and thumped. the other cats come in to watch, but they never interrupt -- it is her quality time. When I pretend to fall asleep, they come up and begin to groom her too. Everyone loves Sweeeepeeee.

So, where I would say that it is not advisable to ever bring in a Feral from the Wild... this is one of those cases where the Particular over-rules the General .... with an especially sweet feral like Sweeeeepeeee, it worked out.

Man, I wish I had a digital camera. My kitties are so cute. I have two, Molly and Princess. Well actually, it's Miss Molly Mitten Kitten and Princess Meow Meow Sugarbaby. But anyway. Oh, and I used to have a Bichon Poodle named Chester. Chester the Molester. Who took a crap in the backyard one day, turned around, sniffed what he had just crapped out and then proceeded to eat it.

Molly likes q-tips, magazines and anything sticky. Princess likes to be inside plastic bags and acts like she's high on ecstacy when she's cuddling with someone. She will drool all over you if she's content enough.

Oh, and my boyfriend made a balloon costume for Princess and we made her wear it while she ran around the house chasing a laser pointer. I almost peed myself.

And they both refuse to let me do my business in the bathroom unaccompanied. I think they feel it's rude or something.

I've three cats and one dog. The cats' names are Fingus, Vinni, Villi and my dog's is Laser. I live in a village, so it's perfect for animals. Before the cats and the dog lived in the house, but now the cats live in our stable with two horses; the dog live in one room in the house. The reason is that my sister is asthmatic (sp?).

This doesn't make their lives bad, though. The dog is allowed to be outside every day and run; the cats are mostly in the stable sleeping and eating during the winter, but during the summer I let them be outside as long as they wish, so they can hunt birds, mice or whatever they want to do.

That's basicly how they live.

Here's what they are like:
Fingus (my favorite) - very friendly all the time and is always hugging me - on the cat's way - when I visit them; is a bit greedy when it comes to tasty food (and is a bit fat, altough not much); likes to be carried, altough not as much as before; is about 10-12 years and is the other cats' father (not biological) and he is always coming when I call for him - eventually.

Vinni - very friendly but very shy; retarded, even though he's about 6-8 years (this makes me love him even more, and I definately don't want it to change) and afraid and very peaceful (birds scare him and he's friend with our rabbits [in fact, I've heard that he tried to breed with them - or them with him]).

Villi - is friendly but can be pissed off easily; hates to be carried (I always tell him to come instead, instead of carrying him). He isn't tamed yet, since he's only one year old after all.

Laser - very friendly all the time; is unsecure (he gets nervous easily and tries to avoid eye-contact [this is because his previous owner was kicking and hitting him alot]) and he's about 7 years.

Me and my family have had a few cats and dogs before aswell, and I will probably post facts about them later.

Saddly guys, Jack the turtle died a few days ago. Im not sure why he died but yeah, he's gone. He started becoming really lazy at first. He used to eat anything that moved but when we put food infront of him last time, he just wouldnt eat. Then it looked like he was trying to cough up something and he kept his neck streched out (not normal). When I left that night, he was laying on his log, head up and out of the water with his eyes closed. I asumed he was sleeping or something. The next day my friend calls me and says the turtle is laying on the bottom of the tank, upside down. We dont know exactly what happened but in any case, we put him in a plastic bag and placed him outside to freeze. We'd (I'd) like to keep the shell, maybe bleech it or something. Poor little guy, we gave him a good life though.

It's funny, people think of their cats and dogs as just 'pets', but there's so much more to them than that. They're living beings, just like us, they have thoughts, they can communicate, they have personality. Sure, they're smaller, but these little guys are our companions, our friends.

My tabby, Charlotte, whom I've had since I was five (I'm sixteen now), has had some pretty interesting things happen to her. When we were living in a townhouse, when I was probably 8 or 9, she disappeared. My family assumed she had wandered off into the forest near our house and was killed by coyotes or bears. My heart was broken, I loved that cat, she provided me comfort ever since my parents divorce, but then she was gone.

A month later she returned, my neighbour had found her on the street wandering. She returned her to us. I was so happy. I can't even begin to imagine what happened to her though, what'd she do in that forest for a month? What'd she eat? Where'd she sleep? It fascinates me that she, a housetrained tabbycat, managed to survive on her own in the depths of the woods.

She's still here, too, sleeping on my bed at the moment. :D But she's always been different since then.

Awwww... cute pets everywhere. I have a soft spot for animals. So much so I now have 4 pets... all new additions to the home within the last few months. Have one found dog that looked like she was starving when we found her, a black kitten that had been attacked by something. His lip and ear are ripped. Two yellow budgies that my mother didn't want.

Here's a quiet moment when my brats were sleeping together on the chair. Usually they're tearing through the house chasing each other or play fighting.

<div align="center">http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/genhawk/brats_300.jpg</div>Cat: Padre (has a tiny white patch on his neck that vaguely reminded me of a priest's collar)
Dog: Muttface (she has other names but I called her muttface for the first few months, not wanting to name her in case her owner came and claimed her. She's still here and she responds to Muttface better than any other name)

I have two dogs, they're from Africa and they're called Azawakhs, called Sable and Shamare.

Sable is a complete dunce and a total ditz, but Shamare is really clever. It's winter here in England, and i put them out in the yard for their breakfast (it's closed off for them) and when she's had enough of freezing her butt off outside, she jumps the fence, opens the door to the outhouse, and then stands in the outhouse peering into the living room at me.

Sable couldn't care less, all he cares about is food!
They will be going to America in Feb, and then i'm thinking of getting a sphinx cat.

I also have two parrots, an african grey and a meyers parrot.
The african grey is called Ollie, and when you put your coat on, he says 'bye bye ollie!' and 'good morning' when you come down the stairs.
When someone comes in the house and he doesn't like them, he'll tell them to F- off!!!

He also imitates the key turning in the lock when i lock up at night and various other sounds, the most annoying one being the smoke alarm!!!!
The meyers parrot hates everyone except me. He despises my boyfriend, races across the perch in his cage to try and peck him.
My mum rescued him over twelve years ago, so we've done well with him.
He doesn't talk, but he whistles and blows kisses at my boyfriend, even though he hates his guts!!

I wouldn't be without those two making a racket. I'm on my own most of the time, so it's good to hear them chattering and whistling away.

She's a beautiful cat, Cold! She's what we in the 'business' call a "torbie" - part tabby markings (the stripes), part torti markings (the orange tortieshell markings). Very unique-looking kitties! :D

Alright, here's Charlotte, for any of you who read my previous post. That's her before she started tearing out all her fur because of the fleas. :([/b]

Were you able to get the fleas under control? You'll need to treat her (preferably with a spot-on treatment like Advantage), treat any other animals in your house, and treat your house itself. Fleas live in bedding, carpet, etc. Once you take care of the problem, make sure you continue to treat Charlotte (and any other pets you have) once monthly.

And FYI, flea collars DO NOT work - they are a waste of money, except to put them in your vacuum bag when you are 'decontaminating' your house. Otherwise, they are completely useless, don't waste your money.

Get a prescription spot-on flea treatment from your vet - I recommend feline Advantage - it kills ALL the stages of fleas (eggs, larva, pupae, and adult), and stops fleas from biting in 3 to 5 minutes after application, and starts killing them within one hour, and all are killed within two hours. And it's a very safe topical medication that can be applied as frequently as every 2 weeks for severe infestions. Use it once monthly to prevent infestions in the future.

Well that's probably more than you needed to know about flea treatment, but fleas are tricky little blighters and they make pets miserable. Good luck.

No, the fleas aren't gone yet. They've had them for several months now. We've given them flea bathes and some other stuff but hasn't worked great, so we're waiting until we get Advantage. I feel terrible, though, they're always scratching and biting themselves, and now Charlottes missing patches of hair on her back and legs. Same with my other cat, Febus.

OK I am going to try to show pics of my kitties (thanks for help Burns!) Names are Minky, Skunky, and Fox.

And Burns, you can see if you think Minky is a Tonkinese. She was a stray but obviously so special and beautiful that I thought she must be a rare valuable breed. I named her Minky before I found a picture in a book of a Mink Tonkinese. That coincidence was too much, so I decided she must be one. But she is not skinny like your Cloud, she is big and round. She acts like a Siamese, always meowing at me, very demanding and stubborn. But she has a very beautiful musical purr unlike any cat I've ever heard. I'm not playing favorites, Skunky is a very special cat too, very tiny but very tough, able to take on Fox who is twice as big. Fox is just a big pain in the ass greedy boy, but I've had him the longest.

Ok here goes, I hope this works. Oh yea, I don't think it shows, but Minky has a white tip on her tail. And my cats most definitely do not love each other, sometimes it sounds like wild cougars in the house. But nobody ever gets really hurt.

Burns
11-24-2006, 05:51 PM
Yay, Moonbeam! I see you got the attachments to work! :D

Very cute kitties too! I like the pic with them lined up on the couch.

Minky is what we'd consider a Siamese Mix. She definitely has beautiful markings - my guess is that she's a mix between a Siamese cat (because of the blue eyes and somewhat pointed markings), and either a calico or a tortishell (judging by the dilute variable markings on her coat). This coloration is somewhat uncommon but usually feels plush to the touch, and the cats usually have very sweet personalities. Very cute! :smitten:

Moonbeam
11-25-2006, 05:55 AM
I thought Minky had to be part Siamese because of the way she acts. You're right, her fur is very thick and soft. But she is so big and not skinny like a Siamese, I wasn't sure. I don't know a lot about cat breeds. Somebody who had a Siamese that had points that look liked Fox (orange tabby) said Siamese can have different color points, and that his cat's mother looked a lot like Minky. She probably got abandoned because she screams in the morning until she gets tuna.

I should probably put this question in your special cat-question thread--but have you noticed that orange tabbies have a special outgoing friendly personality? It seems like orange cats, especially Tom cats and it seems like there's more orange toms, have similar personality qualities.

I thought there were more male than female orange tabbies; and most of the females I've known had some white on them as well. I know the genetic explanation for why all tri-colored cats are female, but why are orange tabbies usually male? I think the gray tabbies are just as likely to be female. (oh, I think a rare genetically abnormal-XXY-male cat can be a calico, and is very valuable.)

Yeah, I've only seen 2 or 3 all orange tabby cats (with no white) that were female (and 2 of the 3 were long-haired, not short-haired). I'm guessing the coat color is linked with the sex gene - just like with calicos and the female gene. I've never seen a male calico - they are EXTREMELY rare, and a genetic mutation. I'll probably never see one in my entire life.

Also - another tidbit - did you know that all-white cats with blue eyes are usually always deaf? Or if it's a all-white cat with one blue eye and one other color eye, they will be deaf in the ear on the side of the blue eye? The gene for deafness is linked with the gene for a white coat and blue eyes.

[/b]

That reminds me of something I read; I think there are two ways cats can have blue eyes--the siamese-type genes, which are OK, and the white cat-blue eyes gene, which is linked to deafness. I didn't know they would be deaf on the side of their blue eye tho, that is weird. I love that avatar (of somebody whose name I can't think of now) that is a white cat with a blue and a yellow eye.

The reflection is due to the tapetum lucidum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapetum_lucidum), a reflective layer behind the retina of the eye whichs aids in night vision.

I've found that fair-eyes cats (blue eyes) usually appear with the red glare in photos, while dark-eyed cats (brown or yellow) usually appear with a green shade reflection.

I should have known that you would know. I just recently noticed that light cats have red eyes and dark cats have green eyes. I didn't know the name for it, but I knew it was pigment in the retina.

Only two, but it'd be more if I had any say in it.

What kind?
Ehm, two cats. I don't really know what kind.

What are their names?
Milo, who we got right after he was born, and Merlin, who we adopted.

And what are some things that make your pet unique?
They're kind of a Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde kind of duo. Merlin's always running around the house, mutilating chairs, jumping on you while you sleep... Milo, however, just sits there. Eats, sleeps, occasionaly bites you. That's about it.

Do you have any funny pet stories?
Not really, other than when my family adopted Merlin. Oh god, HORROR. None of us would even open our bedroom doors out of fear of a raging mass of fur and claw tearing apart our face. Picture, say, a WWI rush into a trench. Take two soldiers, trying to stab each other's brains out. Change them both into cats, and make them both about 100 times as angry. Yeah, that was my house for about a week.

I've got a lot of bunnies back home, but no pets allowed up at the dorms.
Most of the bunnies are boring, but among the funner ones were Thundercloud, Oreo and Fiona. I named Thundercloud way back when I was 6 (he died a little over a year ago, unfortunately), and my sister named Fiona (because she gets really obsessive about movies and names EVERYTHING after movie characters). Oreo got his name from a girl in my fourth grade class who said he looked like an Oreo.
Thundercloud was cool because he came when you said his name or whistled, and was generally a really friendly rabbit.
Oreo's funny just because he's the only gay rabbit I've ever known. Flaming gay. He's pretty friendly, and doesn't mind being picked up, which is rare for rabbits.

Fiona's awesome because she's PURE EVIL. Nicknames for her included Furry Ball of Death, Death-Wad, Mini-Scourge and Doom Rodent. She's a mini-flop, so she's a tiny little thing, but she still beats up on all the other rabbits, who are easily twice her size. She's smart, too--we'd let most of the rabbits run free around the backyard, and we'd leave an empty, open cage with a water bottle and any food scraps for the rabbits.
Fiona would get sick of the other rabbits, chase them into the cage, then push the door closed and lay down in front of it to stop them from getting out. It was so hilarious to see her do it, too.

Aw, he's cute! :D Pits can be such wonderful, loving dogs. They get a bad rap because of the dog-fighting stuff, but it's all in the way they are raised and trained. When trained by a (normal) responsible owner, they are such awesome dogs!!

Tsen - awesome bunny stories - though I'm curious how you know Thundercloud is gay :? LOL.

Nah, Oreo's the gay one. It's pretty easy to tell...let him out with guy rabbits, and he gets...well, a little too happy. But let him out with girl rabbits, and he just ignores them. Which is actually kind of nice, because we could let him and all the girl bunnies run around at once without worrying about getting umpteen-million baby bunnies a few weeks later...

I have a dog, his name is winston, although i call him Winafred. He hates me... :( I can state for a fact that when we first got him he hated me, thus nothing i have done to him can be a valid reason to why he hates me. Anyway, yea if I go to pet him he'll growl, though he never bites. My mother says that it's his way of showing he likes me, but i think hes laughing at me in his little doggy heart. However, I drifted off course, he is 7 years old, and is a terrior cross ciowawa (sorry if the spelling isn't correct).

I don't remember if I replied to this or not, so I thought I would do it anyway. I have a dark eyed white ferret named Rogue. She is pretty cool, especially in the morning when she plays a lot. No need to buy her any toys either because she it just as happy to play with a plastic bag since it makes noise and stuff. I used to have another one named Simon and they would play with each other and chase each other around the house. Oh and they really like tubes that they can climb in so I got them some from the Home Depot.

I have around 8 guinea pigs in my house.

Got 2 "girls" ages ago and one decided to be a boy and got the other pregnant. I didn't realise she was pregnant until she gave birth, I just thought she was fat seeing as how she is a guinea pig

So when I found the group of babies, there was 4 but one died at birth. I seperated the dad and got him fixed so that he could go back in the hutch but he must've got the mum pregnant just after she gave birth because she was pregnant again and this time gave birth to 5 more.

We got rid of 2 of them as and then another 1 later because there was too many.
So we was left with the dad and his 2 sons and the mother and her 3 daughters.

The dad recently died though :( and my little brother was upset so we got him 2 more to keep the brothers company.

My sister brought 2 mice home from college one day because they were getting rid of them to make room for new classrooms. They wanted to get rid of the rodents area besically . So she thought that they were a good idea because they were free. One died of cancer and the other lives in the shed because it smells too much. Rodents make crappy pets imo. I bet they don't even have emotions. Just piss all over everything, eat and sleep.

LumpyCat
12-06-2006, 09:43 PM
I have quite a few pets, living in the country with my grandparents..

I have a horse named Cinder, we found a buyer for her though..... I'm moving out and my grandparents can't take care of her, also a donkey named Cookie, and a pony named Fred, also going to a new good home.

For dogs we have, 2 shelties named Cuddles and Rocky, who just had puppies not too long ago, all went to family members (we don't breed for profit). And we have an old mutt named Dufus, he's a great personality... a little snappy with kids though.

For cats we have Lumpy formerly known as Prissy, She's too lazy to clean herself so she gets lumps in her fur every once and a while... My friend came over once after being gone for a few years and said...
"Do you still have that one lumpy cat?" Ever since she has been called lumpy.... When we give her a bath and maintain her fur, we are said to be "De-Lumping Lumpy"....... My wireless router and my friend's computer both have LumpyCat as the name.... It's a bit of an inside joke.
There is Lumpy's kitten meow-moew.. who is the biggest freeloader anywhere. She likes to be inside sometimes and out others, so she is not de-clawed, and when she is happy, which is all the time, she stretches and digs her claws into your lap...... She NEVER stops purring..... or begging for food..... in the morning I've taken to just opening my bedroom window and throwing her outside to eat the cat food out there, because she makes me loose concentration when I'm trying to wild in the morning or remember a dream.... Don't worry Burns, I'm on the first floor. :)

Then there is Mango... A Brilliantly colored Sun Conure, who was actually a cover model for bird talk magazine about 2 years ago........ He is the most overrated pet in the world... all he does is squawk really loud whenever someone tries to talk.... it's a family joke to promise Mango as a Christmas present to anyone who complains about him.

Haha, I would hope so! :P

That's pretty funny about Mango, threatening to give him as a present to people! LOL

And does Lumpy have long hair? That's probably the reason she gets so many mats (which I'm assuming is what you're calling "lumps"). Long-haired cats can't keep up with grooming themselves due to the large amount of hair, so they need to be combed/brushed regularly. Even some short-haired cats, such as geriatric cats and overweight cats, can't groom themselves properly so they develop mats - so they also need to be combed regularly to prevent mats from forming.

Mats are very uncomfortable - they get very tight and close to the skin, causing itchiness and skin irritation. I've had cats come into the clinic that have literally tried to chew their own skin off to rid themselves of the uncomfortable mat. Mats also pull painfully when the cat moves or walks, especially if it's in one of the common places such as over the hips, around the neck and head, and under the armpit area. Never try to cut these mats out with scissors - it's hard to tell where the skin stops and mat starts, especially when it's so close and tight to the skin, and we've had many people accidentally cut large lacerations in their cat's skin that have to be surgically repaired.

heh, probably more than you ever wanted to know about "lumps" or mats, but there ya go.

And the eyes surely is kickass, that's the first thing that i "fell" for about this cat.. havent seen that before, not that kind of contrast.
altough these cats normally has this colour ( Blue persian)..

The reason why they are named Blue is "blue blood = royal blood..", so they are kinda majestic :)

actually that picture was taken when he was just chillin
he was a vibrant, playful, healthy beta
the way he died was when my son took him out of the bowl to play with him and left him there all day for me to find....MUCH much too late :blue:
[/b]

I had a Beta named Johnny who lived well past two years old. We moved him from this little bowl with a plant to a small, yet bigger than the bowl, aquarium. He didn't understand the rules of the filter...

I got another beta long afterwards. I named him after a favorite movie character from my younger childhood years, Drop Dead Fred. Drop Dead Fred dropped dead only two months later. I went on a ten day vacation and my mother was supposed to feed him. The AC upstairs broke and it got to like 90 degrees. My mother found him boiled.

I got another one, Wonka. He lived about a year. He was an awesome fish. He'd wake me up to eat every morning by moving all his rocks around. He'd jump to get food, he was very vibrant. One morning, he was just dead.

I want to add, everyone has such lovely pets.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b88/Nightrise/DSC00554.jpg

This is my five year old Siberian Husky, Kiev. She's my baby girl. She steals food on command, I can take the leash off of her in the front yard and she'll run up to the door anyways (in case you don't know, Huskies are not Golden Retrievers; they don't know recall). I've had her since she was eight weeks old, she's my sweetie. I trained her, I groom her. She's actually quite mellow now, but she wasn't always that way. This girl knew how to open doors, man. She doesn't now, thank goodness, was always afraid she'd get hit by a car. One time she got out at 1 am (thank you, dearest brother, for opening the door for her). At 4 am my brother woke me up to tell me he let the dog out but was going to bed. He said, "It was like she planned it." I went outside to look for her and my brother got upset, but my brother didn't want me to look for her alone, so he went out with me. There she was, at the end of the street, she walked right up to me. I thought my brother was gonna murder her.

hey, thread. time for your WBTB!

I got 7 cats.
In this pic from left to right are Abdul, Shachory, Katyusha, and Barvazon. They are very good freinds as you can see. Abdul took care of them since the were little kittens. I have Abdul since he was a little kitten too. when he was about a year old he disapeared. but two years later I found him! He was several blocks away from where he got lost, and he was still fat and clean as usual...

Stockey, the guy in my avatar, is my 12 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. We adopted him from our local Humane Society when he was about 7 years old. He's a Canine Good Citizen, registered therapy dog, and was working on his CD title with my husband before we retired him from obedience work. It's been an honor to know a dog of his character: loving, obedient, stoic, intelligent, fun-loving, and loyal.

Katyusha is very friendly, affectionate and gentle, she never flashes her claws out when playing :)
BTW I think I noticed some mental differences between female and male cats: I think that the females often tend to be a little smarter, learning from experience somewhat better and faster than the males, and the females are also a little less patient or tolerant, for example if you hold her in your arms, a female will grow impatient faster than a male. and try to scratch you or get away. Do you think there is any truth in these observations?

Yep, as sloth said, it's definitely possible for cats to get arthritis. Actually, about 90% of cats over the age of 12 have some sort of degenerative arthritic changes, especially cats who are overweight. Cats are mostly affected in their hips, which means they may be reluctant to jump up onto things, and are sometimes stiff to walk after a long nap.

Just like in people, there is no cure for arthritis, since it is a progressive degenerative disease, but you can manage it to help make kitty more comfortable. There are glucosamine chondroitin supplements for cats and dogs that help support the joints and cartilage from further breakdown. Also, once the arthritis becomes bad enough, and the cat is very uncomfortable, pain medication is used to ease the pain and make the cat more comfortable. But the biggest thing you can do for KitKat is to get some weight off her. Weight loss in overweight cats with arthritis is the best way to ease the pain and reduce fast progression of the disease.

Do you think there is any truth in these observations?[/b]
I think there is some truth in the difference of general personality in cats based on sex. But there is a huge range in personalities from cat to cat. They are individuals just like people, so it's hard to generalize sometimes.

Ok, thanks. Do you recommend any special diet foods to burn some fat off her? My mom has bought weight loss food for her before, but Nickey doesn't seem to like it and...well, throws it up, most of the time that being on my bed.

Believe me, you do not want to wake up next to a steaming orange pile of cat food.

If she's vomiting within 30 minutes of eating, it's considered regurgitation. You'll usually see whole chunks or kibble in the vomit that hasn't been digested yet. This is usually caused by eating too fast, or eating too much at once. Try reducing the portions fed at a time, or put the dry kibble flat on a plate in a single layer so the cat cannot gulp the food and can only pick up a few kibble at a time, forcing her to eat slower. Sometimes certain foods just don't sit well either, she have more of a sensitive stomach. There are over the counter brands of weight control sensitive stomach foods.

About the weight loss, please see this post (http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=37215&view=findpost&p=395800) - I don't want to re-write all this! hehe. If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me. :)

Just to correct you, lol: Nickey is throwing up, not KitKat. He doesn't like it :(.

But yeah, as you can probably see in Kitkat's picture, we have a huge feeding thing. I've tried to give smaller portions, but my mom is...well...evil. I'll have to force her to accept smaller bowls.

My mom mis crazy.

You're right, I love talking about them, don't care if anybody's listening! So I've got two cats : Mio is a 12 year old female, semi-angora cat with grey hair, green eyes and a very bad temper. But that's old age. She's still very succesful with males lol.
Atchoum is a 1 1/2 year old male, fully angora (judging by his dreadlocks) with dark grey and white fur and yellow-green eyes. He's absolutely huge. He's a very friendly cat who loves to invite neihbours' cats at home (to Mio's dismay). He is so named because the first time he saw a dog, he sneezed. He still does it btw.

Mio and Atchoum are not blood-related, but Atchoum's father is Mio's favourite companion. Mio and Atchoum's father had a kitten last summer, Henriette, who is thus Atchoum's half-sister and step-sister. (since you could say Mio is Atchoum's forced adoptive mother)

Here are the beasts:

For the funny story, well, one day Mio fell asleep in the washing-machine, where a stack of dirty laundry was waiting to be washed. It's a washing machine whose door is on the top. When she woke up, she made the cylinder rotate, and the clothes got stuck, so she was unable to put the cylinder back with the opening on the top and was stuck in. Luckily, we heard her mewling - just as we were about to leave home to go to work and school. We had to tear the clothes to get her out.

I wrote this poem my senior year for my magazine project in dedication (hey, I wanted to listen to this song!) to my first cat, Misty:

When I looked in her eyes,
As green as gems,
I wish I knew what she thought.
I loved her to death
And I spoiled her, too,
And toys of all kinds I bought.
I admit that she
Was not quite as bright
As some of the toys I did buy her,
But I never expected
She would sadden me so
When she died, quite alone, in the dryer.

Third grade... As sad as it was, I do kind of have to laugh. She was not a bright cat. She would get caught when the swinging doorw as closing.

Remember the two cats I mentioned before who had fleas? Well, the fleas got the best of the white one, and made him mutilate himself and break down. It was terrible - Febus was ripping out fur, bleeding all over our beds, and peeing on the floor. We had to put him down; it wasn't even my cat and it was heartbreaking. He was the king of the household. The saddest thing is, it could've been prevented, but my mom had refused to pay the $40 for the Advantage. :(

Fortunately, after seeing the torment it put us through seeing our first pet death, our mom took Charlotte (the tabby) to the vet. Charlotte was also losing fur, and she was incredibly skinny. The vet said she was having an allergic reaction to the fleas, and gave her a cortazone shot. She also gave us aforementioned Advantage and de-worming pills (which was the reason for her skinniness). Within a week, Charlotte's fur returned to normal and she gained all her weight back. She's now the same cat she always used to be (and much chattier, I think). :D

May Febus rest in peace.

Thanks for your concern. It was a miserable way to go, but I think he's happier now. I wasn't there personally for his 'treatment', but my sisters had an interesting story to tell. They said he was making quite the fuss in the car and in the vet, but as soon as they opened the door and he saw the table, he started purring like he knew what was about to happen. He went very calmly.

Wow, a month later and I still get teary when I think about it.

Anyways, yes, Charlotte is doing well! So well I've decided to throw in some snazzy pictures. :P

I think she is especially beautiful considering she's 13 years old! I've seen cats that are younger and are matted and ugly. I'm lucky, and so is she, haha.

CB, those are great pictures of Charlotte. I love the way her eyes look in the first picture. So green and bright.

And what you said about Febus brought tears to my eyes too. Partly because I was with my dog when we had to put her to sleep. Amber was the most wonderful dog--there couldn't have been a more loved dog than she was. She was my first childhood dog and was just like a family member. But she got so old and blind and deaf, that she kept getting hurt. I held her until she took her last breath.

And now my favorite cat (that I posted pictures of earlier--the diluted tortie) has been missing for two weeks and I am now finally trying to accept that she won't be coming back.

But I do still have my kitten who has grown into a beautiful cat. She is a very happy loving cat. And I love her even though she likes to suck on my blanket and make it all wet. :-P

Anyway CB, I'm sorry you've had to deal with the loss of your cat.

(And pet Charlotte for me, would you? :) )

I have a four year old west highland white terrier named Rielly, its a girl. It was really cool as a puppy but has slowly lost its charm on me as its aged. It always sleeps on my bed so the blanket smells like dog, its not my favorite dog ever, but its not bad either.

I have two cats, both adopted. Here they are:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Cutter3/Olivia2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Cutter3/Olivia3.jpg

First, this is Olivia. She's the first cat we got. She's kinda friendly, but she likes being near people, like in the corner of the room if I'm watching TV for example, but she walks away if you go closer. So far I've taught her to sit and shake hands on command. She's gotten really fat lately...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Cutter3/Twiggy1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Cutter3/Twiggy2.jpg

This is Twiggy. We picked her up last year, and she was tiny. It's been a while since then, so we don't think she's gonna grow much more, she's just a runt. She purrs really loudly, and rolls over as soon as you pet her... And then starts biting your hand. Which hurts.

She doesn't really make much noise, and when she wants someone to open the door that leads upstairs, for example, she makes this really funny squeaking noise in place of meowing. Because her bell makes more noise than her, my dad sometimes calls her "Tinkerbell".

Some more pictures of her inside bags:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Cutter3/Twiggy3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Cutter3/Twiggy4.jpg

I can't help but laugh whenever I see the last one. Her expression is priceless. XD

That's terrible - I'm very sorry for the loss of your cat as well. :(

I always wondered what would have happened if Charlotte and Febus had babies - what would they look like? And how would they have grown to act? Things like that make me want another kitten.

A cat sucking on the blanket, that's hilarious. Charlotte always rubs her face on corners, and if she does it enough times, she starts drooling. LOL. It's not like gross, doggy drool - it comes in little droplets and it's hilarious.

(And pet Charlotte for me, would you?)

Done and done. :)

And wow, Charlotte is now playing with string and little christmas ornaments. She hasn't done that since she was very very small. She even chased her tail for a little while, and that's a first! I'm so amazed at how much energy she has. I will be getting some of these playful pictures on camera. :D

That's terrible - I'm very sorry for the loss of your cat as well. :([/b]Actually I have great news. She showed up a couple of days ago. The funny thing was earlier that day I had been thinking about her and thinking about how hard it is to lose a pet this way, and to never know what happened and never officially say good-bye. So I decided that since she had been gone nearly three weeks, it was time to say good-bye. So I thought about her and said my good-byes and then felt some closure.

A few hours later she showed up at the back door meowing horsely and looking very skinny. She seemed desperatley happy to be home, and after eating and drinking stayed by my side the rest of the evening, then slept on top of me all night. I didn't sleep well, but I was so grateful to have her back that I was glad to have her nearby.

I really wonder where she was. I'm wondering if she got locked in someone's shed or garage. It makes me feel so bad to think of what she might have gone through to get back home.

And here is something else funny. The older cat sometimes imitates the kitten and sucks on the blanket too. She never did that before the kitten started doing it. :content:

I suppose it's time to introduce our new Doberman puppy, Red XIII, to everyone (though my close friends have already been slammed with tons of pics already, but they have been nice enough to humor me and not put me on "ignore", lol - you know who you are  ). He is a red/rust Doberman, and those of you who are familiar with Final Fantasy can guess where his name came from (along with the names of our two cats).

Red XIII @ 4 weeks old (still at the breeder's)

Red @ 6 weeks (still at breeder's)

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/burns91/redmale6wksgold2.jpg

Red @ 9 weeks (still at breeder's) - the puppies' ears were cropped the week before, so their ears are taped up to a cup. Most reputable breeders will not let their pups go without cropping the ears since this is the "ideal" look of the Doberman.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/burns91/DSC03144r.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e284/burns91/DSC03140r.jpg

Red @ 11 weeks (after coming home) - after the ears are healed, they have to be "posted" or taped up for about 6 months to get them to stand. They have to be re-taped every 4-5 days or so.

Red @ 15 weeks - playing in the kiddie pool on a hot day

He is currently 15 1/2 weeks and weighs 40 lbs. Full grown, he will be around 90-100 lbs. We start obedience training next weekend. He's such a good puppy, and the cats are starting to accept him into the family more and more everyday. :)

Burns, I never get tired of seeing your pictures! :D

And I finally got around to bringing my camera to my friend's house where my cat lives! So, this is Monica. She's not mean by any stretch of the imagination, but she's not used to having her picture taken. She's actually quite affectionate with those that she knows... usually to the point of not leaving them alone. However, when she's done being pet, she's done and will leave. That's just the way those things work.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23/Amethystar/S6300265.jpg

I'm getting a feeling that she doesn't like my camera, though.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23/Amethystar/S6300261.jpg

But I love her... and will take her away some day to live with me. Just me!

This is my cat, Miss Kitty. She's about three months old, and enjoys playing with her toys and climbing up the walls/ curtains. I'm just waiting until she's old enough to get fixed and declawed!

thedogsmeow, cuuuuuute!! :D

Are you sure you want to declaw her? :( My cat has all his claws and they have never ever caused problems (in his adult life). Give him a scratching post and he's happy! Also this way we know that if he ever gets lost outside he'd be able to catch food.

thedogsmeow
06-06-2007, 08:21 PM
I wish I didn't have to declaw her. She has a scratching post, but she seems to prefer the curtains and my work clothes over the scratching post!

Mes Tarrant
06-06-2007, 08:28 PM
Well I think that's just because she's a kitten. You can definitely train her to not scratch, the way you can train a puppy to not chew your shoes or use the house as his private bathroom! :D

Next time she tries to scratch something, bring her over to the post and put her paws on it. It does work eventually.

thedogsmeow
06-06-2007, 08:38 PM
Thanks, I'll try that. But I'm still getting her declawed, as I need my work clothes! lol

Burns
06-06-2007, 08:43 PM
Missy Kitty is very cute :) I agree with Mes Tarrant about the declawing though. But if you are still going to declaw her, the sooner the better. The old and heavier a cat gets, the more painful they are after surgery and the longer they take to recover. Some cats develop behavioral problems such as aggression if they are declawed older. At my clinic, the ideal weight to declaw a cat is 3 pounds. If you are going to amputate her fingertips, do her a favor and do it while she is still small!

Ame, Monica is so pretty! She looks like a very lovey girl. :)

Wow. I didn't know you guys had replied to my earlier photos. Sorry I didn't respond sooner.

NeAvO: yeah, she's a biter. I read up a bit on that and it seems I have to become the household dominant ferret to get her to listen. Haha. They're smart and curious critters.

Burns. Thanks for the compliment. I had a few problems with her in the beginning, she got into the vents a few times but I think my house if ferret proof now.

An update, My dog Muttface/Diamond had puppies today. Her first litter so I had to play midwife to make sure they all came along okay. Lost the first one but the rest are alive and well so far. So now there are possibly 8 more little creatures that will soon be overrunning my house. :D
