People can come up with rationalizations and reasons and excuses for anything.... we call all that 'spin' nowadays. Lawyers engage in 'spin' for their clients, and politicians are adept at spinning for themselves. So, you can say that the Mormons engaged in polygamy because there were extra women, but so many cultures have had to deal with an imbalance of their female demigraphic without resorting to sexually enslaving them, which is, afterall what multiple marriage is... a form of sexual enslavement. Ordinarily such women find employment as domestics, nurses, school teachers, nannies, or they spread themselves out more socially as prostitutes. In Catholic Cultures many 'extra' women take Religious Orders and become Nuns.

Then we have the fact that long after any massacre the mormons of Utah still found it very convenient to add a child bride to their Stable of Wives every couple of years. And then the imbalance went quite in the other direction, where the wealthiest landowning Mormons had a monopoly on all the attractive females, and the humbler portion of the male population was left to fend among themselves. The upsurge in both homosexuality and with young men leaving Mormonism to go to sunny California where females could be had... well, that is what inspired the Leadership of the Mormons to suddenly grow a legal and law abiding conscience and discern the wisdom of Monogamy.

Not entirely true, Leo. One, Mormons didn't adopt such 'child brides'. The youngest wives involved in polygamy in the LDS church was no less than 19, perhaps 17 (not entirely sure.) Whichever the case may be, said wife was married mostly to provide financial support, not for sexual benefits. Not to mention there's never been said upswing in homosexuality in Utah. Not when it was founded, and certainly not now. Utah remains one of the most conservative states in the US.
Now, though, the FLDS church (Fundamental LDS, basically reorganized Mormons with highly differing viewpoints) still practice polygamy and DO take such child brides. In fact, their leader is currently wanted for arrest, with a $500,000 reward for his whereabouts and several bounty hunters on his trail after he ran off on bail. He's got three consecutive life sentences awaiting him if he's caught (well, not officially since the trial is yet to be had, but the evidence is firm and rather incriminating, and no matter what the decision is on the three counts, his minimum sentence is something like fifty years without chance of parole). Anyway, he's facing charges on forcing two or three fourteen year old girls into marriage, against their will. One they basically abducted out of Nevada while fleeing through the state, never having met her before, but declaring her a wife to one of their members.

I don't mean to be all negative, but, NZ really isn't all that special. What often happens, when you talk about the beauty of a country you've never been to, is that you talk about the "best of" presented to you in movies, documentaries, etc. MOST countries have exceptionally beautiful scenery, if you know where to look, but most often if you LIVE in that country, you never actually get around to seeing the exceptional scenery in your own country. In my opinion, the most beautiful places I've ever been to, are England and Australia. Australia is the oldest continent on the planet (New Zealand one of the youngest significant land-masses... not a continent, though, I know), and when you go there, you can definitely feel the age. The most beautiful place I've ever been in Australia: the Blue Mountains. Stunning. Absolutely stunning. There's also lots of places in Britain that have a certain beauty to them, but, most often, these places are far *away* from the cities.

NZ certainly has some spectacular scenery, I'm not gonna deny. But I don't think it's the most beautiful place on earth.
