View Full Version : Ludic Dreaming Software For Mobile Phones
dreamtrainer
07-17-2006, 01:23 PM
I have made a lucid dreaming training software for mobile phones called LucidWeaver. It is done in Java and should work on most mobile phones and PDA that support newest versions of J2ME profiles.
It is the first lucid dreaming software for mobile devices in the world.
It can be downloaded from www.lucidweaver.com (http://www.lucidweaver.com) (new link)
LucidWeaver includes Dream Alarm with Lucidity training function which you can adjust to your own sleep cycle length. It can be used to improve your dream recall and to train yourself to have more lucid dreams.
There is also reality testing functions to help you remember your goal during days.
A regular alarm clock in LucidWeaver prevents you from dreaming forever :)
Any comments are welcome.
Enjoy!

[/b]
It won't take more than 20 kb (that is kilobytes).
So you should be able to install DreamTrainer about 1600 times for 32MB memory :)
I tried to keep it as small as possible.

Is this program to help you with reality checks through the day, or does it play messages through the night during REM? I need an RC check reminder.

What I really need is for it to remind me to do RCs by vibrating, because a lot of times i am somewhere where i need my cell phone to not make any noise. (ex: school, work) Dreamtrainer, you think you could add a vibrate feature?
dreamtrainer
09-06-2006, 12:23 PM
I will add vibration to the wish list.
(Actually I the Vibration is already included but it is not activated, since I haven't been able to test it.)

DreamTrainer has changed it's name to LudicWeaver.
This was because I was informed of trademark claim for previous name and was threathened by a law suit. I don't have time or money for these kind of things.
So free or donationware lucid dreaming software in Java for mobile phones can now be found from:
http://www.lucidweaver.com
The software is the same but wait for the upgrades in near future.

Double posting's bad enough, triple posting is pure annoyance. Are you trying to be a post-whore or something, because no one likes spammers.

I downloaded the program into my cel and gave it a try. Abit confusing at first but I see the usefulness. :) One problem though is the timer gets stuck sometimes causing everything else to go screwy. The first time I noticed when I changed the settings for reality #hour to zero (Should that be allowed ?). At random, the timer would stop at a number yet the alarm will go off eventully. Once that happens I can not change anything in the menu and I can't exit the program. I have to turn off my cel to get out of it. :/
I really like it! I think there should be an option to choose a sound for the alarm. :) Are you going to continue to update the program?

Sounds nice, I haven't downloaded yet but I'm about to try. Anyway your website is very nice, good job. There's a spelling error in the FAQ though, under "7. My husband/wife/partner gets irritated because of Dream alarm in the night. " You wrote excited as exited.
If you need money to support the project put ads on the side or bottom the website. I wouldn't recommend trying to sell this though, because I don't know how many people would buy it.
Works on my phone, no idea how to work it though :P

Deleting posts is possible you know...but you're probably right, I didn't look at the time difference earlier.
Anyways, I intend on downloading the program and putting it on my phone once I get the phone set up with the computer, as the computer is having issues recognizing the phone, and I havenn't had time to fix it.

Yes. This is actually covered on the release notes. (Sorry for the inconvenience.) Most of the time it is enough to restart the application by exiting first. Do remember to do a reality check everytime it behaves strangely. After all you could be in the middle of a dream.
Reality checks at 0 hour should be no problem. This means that you get reality test from 1 to 60 minutes.
Choosing the sound alarm and even putting your own mp3's or recorded voice messages are in plan. I just wonder when I will get the time to do these. (Don't hold your breath :)

Any suggestions on how to install it?

it doesnt seem to work on my sanyo SCP-3100, but i just set the alarm to go off every hour on the hour on vibrate. this should have the same effect (if i choose to wear the phone to bed, i might feel the vibrations.) However, i've heard vibration wasnt the best way to signal to the dreamer that they are sleeping, but i cant let it ring during class, so i guess i'll have to leave it this way.

Yes an update! You may have said this in your post but I have a question. On my RAZR, if i want to have lucid weaver running i have to have my phone open. I don't want to waste all that time with the lcd on and it will keep me awake. Does the hide function fix that? Also it's great that the settings will be saved. Good work.

In my own Nokia 6260 the closing of the lid hides the LucidWeaver to background and it continues to run and give alarms. The hide function in menu should do the same if RAZR supports it. Note that current version of LucidWeaver doesn't bring the application to foreground in Dream alarm. You have to select it again from place where it was installed originally to open it. Reality Test and Wake up alarms should bring it to foreground.
However the Java Virtual Machine implementations vary with manufacturer and I can't tell how your mobile is working.
You can test the closed lid functioning by setting the Dream alarm delay and cycle lengths to 1. This way you will get an alarm within one minute and can hear the beeps if they come. As I said it works fine on my Nokia.

on my ericsson p910i i still cant adjust the volume on the alarms, even when i adjust in the software, and on the phone itself.
just for info.
and some kind of "timer adjustment" for the vibration would be nice, so that you can set it to a longer\shorter vibration cycle.

The vibration cycle is controlled totally by Java Virtual Machine. The API allows to put just the amount of time for how long to vibrate. The implementations vary however...

That looks very interesting. Unfortunately I have an iPhone which doesn't support Java. Seems like if you could create an iPhone version you may have a market over at the Itunes app store. I'd certainly try it if it was there. Unfortunately you need a Mac to develop for the iPhone.

I have no idea what's the status of J2ME and iPhone at the moment.
Unforunately I don't have time to make a native iPhone code of the LucidWeaver so you just have to wait for Sun.

BlackBerry... could you compile a version for me?
I'm sorry but there is no Blackberry version at the moment. I will try to compile one sometime in the future but it might take a couple of months before I have time to do this. Converting a J2ME application for Blackberry is a bit complicated but it should be possible.

Nokia's internet tablet doesn't support J2ME or CLDC at the moment. So I'm sorry but LucidWeaver doesn't work.
There has been some experimental projects to import Java into tablets but these has mainly concerned J2SE because of the computational power of the tablets. More limited resources mobile Java version J2ME is not actually needed. LucidWeaver works only on mobile devices at the moment.
Nokia's internet tablets don't support Java virtual machine (JVM) as default.

Use tip's for LucidWeaver:
How can I get more reality checks?
LucidWeaver gives a reality check message every couple of hours as default. If would you like to have a reality check reminder every hour change the settings as follows:
Select: Options > Settings > Reality settings
Edit: Random delay (hours) field
Change the field value to: 0
Select: Save
Go back to main screen and activate ""Reality" alarm from button.
Now you will get a random reality check alarm within 1 and 60 minutes.

On some phones LucidWeaver can be run on background and on others it or any Java application can not. I'm sorry I don't have any list on which mobile phones has this feature hide on background feature.
Unfortunately there is no Java specification on running the application on background. This makes implementation of any kind of calendar or alarm clock in Java very difficult. So different manufacturers have implemented this differently even in their own different models.
I guess LucidWeaver alarms could be made to work with Push functionality imitating running on background. However implementing Push functionality would take too much time for me at the moment. Maybe some day in the future...

This application works wonderfully. Thank you very much for it.
I did have to use a version that is not exactly for my phone, and it glitches every now and then because it is not made for my phones model.
I was wondering if you could convert, or already have a template that converts to the model that I have.
My phone is the sony ericsson g900. I had to use the sony ericsson k800i application for the lucid weaver.
The systems are very similar therefore If it would not be too much, could you please find a way to make the glitches go away in an updated version for the sony ericsson g900?
Thank you very much in advanced

Sony Ericsson G900 has been added to the download list for LucidWeaver homapage. It can be found from from both mobile pages and proper homepage.
The settings are from unstable device database so there is no guarantee it will work but please give it a try if you have the patience. I don't have access for G900 phone to test it myself unfortunately.
You can also try the Generic-Anyphone version of LucidWeaver if nothing else works. Generic-Anyphone works on some phones that are not listed.
In LucidWeaver newsletter you will get news about new stable releases. You can find newsletter subscription from LucidWeaver homepage.

Use tips for LucidWeaver:
Lucidity training by falling asleep consciously (WILD)
This text can be found from manual but should be helpful even if you don't use LucidWeaver.
When you have developed some base and remember many dreams every night and perhaps have already seen your first lucid dreams, it is time to learn some advanced techniques. An relatively easy way to enter a lucid dream is to fall asleep consciously. LucidWeaver's dream alarms can be used for advanced lucidity training. From Dream alarm settings switch the dream alarm type from dream recall to lucidity training. This will give you some additional dream alarms for every REM-state.
1. DON'T MOVE.
When you wake up for Dream alarm don't move. When going to bed and activating dream alarm you should set your intention so strongly that the very first thing that comes to your mind after waking up for dream alarm is: "Don't move". The dream alarm will shut off by itself.
2. RELAX.
If you manage to wake up with out moving any part of your body you are already in a totally relaxed state which is perfect for entering a lucid dream. You don't even have to do any relaxation exercise since your body is already on a verge of dream but your mind is alert.
3. CONCENTRATE.
To keep your mind awake pay attention to something. This could be the sound or feel of your breathing. Don't force it but pay attention gently. When your breathing starts to deepen by itself with out your conscious effort you are almost dreaming. You could pay attention to your bodily feeling. When odd sensations like feeling heavy or light, rocking or swirling sensation comes these tell that you will are falling asleep at the moment.
If you are a visual type pay attention to what you see behind your closed eye lids. You will first see cloud like pulsating and swirling lights which turn in to images and scenes that you will see. Again this means that you are falling more deeply in to a dream. An auditive person can listen to the sound of silence in your ears. You may hear the blood pulsing in your ears. You may start to hear cracks or booms or words and sentences, even music. Remember to hold on. Don't lose your consciousness. Pay close attention to anything you experience. It will help you to remain conscious of your dream.
All these weird events mean that you are falling asleep fast. In psychology this state is called hypnagogic state which means the border state of wakefulness and sleep. And don't be afraid. You go through these sensations many times every night at every sleep cycle. Usually you are just not conscious when they happen.
4. LET GO.
Balancing between sleep and wakefulness is a skill that might take some time to master. Don't be disappointed if you don't have success at first try. It is a big step forward even if you just manage to remain conscious during those strange hypnagogic sensations. There is just a small step forward from that to full lucid dream. Be patient. With repeating practice you will learn more and more of your personal style of falling asleep and you learn to expect certain things. You will develop your own dream path through which you enter the dream world until it is as familiar as going through your home door. The key is not trying to control this process too much. You can't force yourself to fall asleep. It will happen by itself when you let go but still pay close attention to what is happening.
5. ENTER A DREAM.
Little by little if you manage not to lose your consciousness during those hypnagogic sensations, they will develop in to a dream. Don't try to take active part in a dream too early. This might wake you up. Let the dreamscape and its actions surround you fully before entering the dream actively.
You should be in a total 3D world of hearing, touching, and feeling. If you try to enter a dream when it is still just an image in your hypnagogic state you will wake and lose the dream. So again, show some patience and take small steps. Adjust LucidWeaver's Lucidity training settings (from Dream alarm settings screen) so that the additional dream alarms keeps you awake but still not disturbing you too much. Start with many cues in couple of minutes interval. When you have learned to keep your consciousness deep into the hypnagogic state set less cues with longer intervals like five or ten minutes.
