first post, hola :)
Just had a quick question in regards to melatonin.. what is the recommended way to take it? Should i take some right before i fall asleep...or should i set my alarm for 4hours and take and go back to sleep? (no wilds or any of that stuff)
what are your thoughts about the slow release variety?
thanks!
YOu should take melatonin before going to sleep. The bottle says to take it 20 min before going to bed.
Taking melatonin in the middle of the night will make you very tired next morning. I think same goes with the delayed release variety....

If you want to use melatonin to get to sleep use it a little before you go to bed. It should put you to sleep right when you lay down.

I was going to ask that. In that case you could just wake up 3 hours before you'd usually wake up and take 100-200mg of b6. I don't see much point to melatonin, unless you can't stay asleep with the b6.

Hello, I just took a capsule of melatonin, and am planning on going to bed in a half-an-hour.
Would it be safe to take a capsule of 5-htp right before bed? In case you don't know, 5-htp is another sleep aid, and in this case these capsule also contain a small amount of valerian, ANOTHER sleep aid.
Desperate measures...

I wouldn't recommend it. Doubling up on sleep aids can leave you groggy for a week.
Taking B6 3 hours before waking up wont do much. You will notice full effect if you take it 6 hrs before wakingup.
As for 5HTP - I've been taking 3mg melatonin + 100mg 5HTP + B6 complex + 50 mg B6 for a few days in a row for some very interesting dreams and i dont feel groggy in the morning

Actually I've had Melatonin as a prescription sleep aid from my Docter since I have chronical sleeping problems. It worked well the first 2 years or so but eventually my restlessness only got bigger anywayz so I stopped taking them regulairly. just occasionally.
And unlike most of you here think, Melatonin should NOT be taking right before sleep.
In fact your Brain's Pineal Gland starts naturally producing Melatonin when your Eyes Register that the Light of day is fading: At DAWN.
Take a (1mg,3mg or 5mg) Melatonin pill at Dawn just before the daning sky turns nighlty blue.
Trust me you'll sleep like a rose. It will have most effect this way.
PS however this doesn't seem to stimulate awareness and wakefullness: what we desire for Lucidity. In fact it only makes you fall asleep faster and usually deeper too, so I never understood why this may be a good Lucid-Aid.
However I might go N read something about Melatonin's effects, Duration of effects and duration of the Onset of it's effects. Maybe by timing it just right you could take 1 pill of Melatonin somewhere before dinnertime or so. And time it JUST so that the effects of it wear of EXACTLY after 5 hours of sleep.
You could then either sleep&dream on to see if it might possibly rebound your Dreaming REM-sleep, or wake up in a WBTB fashion and go back to sleep trying to WILD this way.
Perhaps when the Melatonin stops having it's effect while you're asleep it might suddenly give you a moment of Clearity and Lucidity in your Dreams. Something worth experimenting with I say. :)
