Only I can post topics in Forum Announcements, but anyone can reply. Board problems can be reported anywhere, including in private messages or email.

Ok Merck, one or two...fine. But you're making a habit of digging up old threads. You must be really bored or something. I'm sick of reading through shit and then I'm like...wtf October 2003!?? Damnit!!

Merck
05-18-2005, 06:28 AM
Okay then, lets just delete all this boring crap that no one ever reads if that's how all of you feel about it. But what about all the new members who haven't read any of this stuff since its on page 53 or whatever? Granted, there isn't a lot to be learned from this particular thread but its in the Lounge anyway. But for some of the other threads I have brought back I think they have some relavance and the would have never been seen by anyone unless they took the time to actually dig around for them and few if any people ever do that. What most of you elder members consider old is all new stuff for the new members. I say this without meaning any disrespect to any of you.

I'm with Merck here...I mean he was deemed the Necroposter and confirmed by Seeker. It's not like he is just digging up a bunch of random threads each day just to clutter the boards.

Ok, sure this particular one is a bit senseless, but for the most part Merck brings back threads that are (or at least were) interesting...and that can be beneficial for our new members.

And like Merck said if you (the mods) don't like it, then use your mod-like abilities to either delete old threads or place them in an archive section and lock them.

Seeker
05-18-2005, 07:40 AM
I did award him the title of Necroposter because there are some old and forgotten threads out there that are pretty cool.

Merck has been told to keep it relevant and to alert me when he finds threads that are truly memorable so I can move them.

I trust his judgement, but I'm sure you guys will keep watch on him and let me know if he get to zealous, right?

I would like to know how that would ever be considered a relevant response to a relevant thread? Are we really getting all the wiser with that oh so very insightful comment? Are we really getting anything from bringing this thread back?

I honestly think that it is a terrible idea to have this guy digging up old threads. Perhaps if he truly has something that is crutial that he express, then yeah ok, do it. But it does get annoying when he is reviving threads by the dozen, just for the hell of it.

Also, if we are gonna have someone in charge of reviving threads, I would not choose anyone from the eternal n00b generation (you all know who you are), but rather a community member that actually knows what he is doing, for he was present during those times, and therefore can actually bring back a thread if he considers it relevant/important/not a complete waste of everyone's time.

Okay this thread isn't rellavant. It will be the last. My apologies go out to all deeply offended members.

Truthbearer it wasn't necesary for you to stoop that low in regarding new ACTIVE members of the forum in the way that you did. I don't appreciate the condescending attitude and I'm sure other members don't either. Still, I have no hard feelings and I consider the matter closed. I didn't respond at first but I found it necesary to later on.

Merck will no longer be the Necroposter, instead I've just signed him on as the 'DV Historian'

He will no longer be reviving old topics by posting in them. Instead, he will be digging around looking for topics that he thinks will be of interest to our newer and less experienced members. Then, he will forward these links to me for reviews and if they have merit, I will be moving them to the Memorable Topics forum, which I am thinking of renaming to the Dreamviews Archives.

This way, new members can benefit from the wisdom of those that have gone on before us. He does bring a new set of eyes to the problem, don't you think? Sometimes we oldsters who have been at this for so long we take things for granted.

Truthbearer
05-18-2005, 12:31 PM
that actually sounds like an interesting idea. Much more formal, and not just doing it for the hell of it, but rather with a concrete purpose. I would assume that all the threads will be spawning only from the dream related forums, then?

In that case, problem solved..

Yes, mostly. There will be the opportunity though for an occasional topic from the Lounge to creep in if it was especially entertaining or helped to build community spirit.

Truthbearer
05-18-2005, 12:47 PM
an occasional post is perfect....

what we don't want is the lounge to be unnecesarily filled with old, resolved topics that most members just rather see rest in peace, rather than be butchered completely...

you've done it again seeker... :goodjob2:

Ok, this sounds better and much more reasonable. I just didn't like how old, useless, threads were brought back for almost no good reason.

icedawg
05-18-2005, 02:24 PM
First off, i could have sworn i've made it clear, on more than one occasion, that digging up old threads is perfectly acceptable.

In this case the user didn't have anything useful to add to the original thread, so perhaps this particular instance could be frowned upon. However, when mods react by freaking out in regards to generally replying to old threads--and not being specific about quality of additional content provided--it sends the wrong message to new users. I know most of you have seen this http://www.linuxbench.org/Posting.html, and its message applies on this forum as well: IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO POST IN AN EXISTING THREAD THAN TO START A NEW ONE!

i will adjust the rules to reflect the aforementioned. no, no; no need to thank me: it's what i do.

that's alright, just so long as you respect the new rule. it really is a good rule though, and is in use in lots of forums (you can find steam's flash animation all over). bringing up old topics is great for new users who otherwise probably wouldn't find them.

OH, here it is:

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO POST IN AN EXISTING THREAD THAN TO START A NEW ONE!
There's a good chance that the material you'd like to discuss has already been discussed, so do a search to see if you can find a matching topic. Then, before posting, consider if you have more information to add to the topic or if your question has already been answered. Please do not reply to old topics if you are not going to provide a useful post unless you have a good reason to do so (i.e. asking a question, or calling attention to a related topic perhaps elsewhere on the board); if you follow the aforementioned, please feel free to dig up old topics to carry on past conversations. Don't let anyone give you a hard time about digging up old topics if you've adhered to these guildelines!

Well, I think as a general rule, it's OK to dig up old threads, as long as you say something relevant to the topic that it started as.

As far as replying to this topic, it's a total toss-up 'cuz though it had a specific title, this thread really didn't have a specific topic.

That said, Pyro Yuy's post here is a good example of what NOT to do:

maybe the new rule should be entitled,

"IT IS OFTEN BETTER TO POST IN AN EXISTING THREAD THAN TO START A NEW ONE! "

or

"IT IS SOMETIMES BETTER TO POST IN AN EXISTING THREAD THAN TO START A NEW ONE! "

or

"HEY MAN, QUIT YO' NEW-TOPIC-WHORING."

Great link Ice! I love that old 50's propoganda format. Would be really cool to have something like that taylored to dreamviews and linked at the top of the forum page.

Our new historian has begun looking around for old topics. When he finds them, if they appear to have come to a good conclusion and will not benefit from further discussion, I will place them in the Archive.
