Illness And Lucid Dreaming

This past weekend I was sick with the flu and barely got any sleep. On friday night I went to sleep pretty early and felt miserable. When I finally fell asleep I felt I was paralyzed and I actually became lucid for the first time! I realized I was dreaming when I saw a frog on the bathroom floor and then the whole room began to fill with water. Then I spun around in circles and thought of being back in my room. Next thing I know I'm back in my room. Then I wake up. Again I fall asleep and a few short moments later I was paralyzed again, became lucid, and woke up. The following night the same thing happened. This is the most dreams I have ever had in a row.
My mother is a nurse and I told her about it and she said that it was because I was sick. I was just wondering if this were true. Your brain does seem to be a little "funky" when you are sick. Let me know if any of you have ever experienced hightened lucid dreaming while you were sick and why you might think so.

You say that you barely got any sleep. I usually have a better chance of having a LD when I go to sleep when I'm really exhausted. Maybe that could be an explanation?

I always have messed up, weird random dreams when I'm sick. Especially if i have a fever. Something about the illness spawns some weird experiences!

Sickness accompanied by a fever has always created strange dreams for me. Sometimes its fun, and sometimes it just... weird. Like I'm half-asleep but dreaming, and I haven't got the slightest control over whats going on in my head.

There is a reason that people often experience more dreams when the haven't had much sleep recently. When deprived of REM sleep, the brain will sort of go into 'REM overdrive' the next time it has the chance, catching up on all the REM it has missed. More time spent in REM sleep means more dreams, so people usually remember more dreams.

I believe is is caused due to your having a favor. Your high body temperature often aids this.
This can be noticed even if you are not sick but wake up extremely too hot.

Believe it or not I have done this to help induce LDs before. :P

I have a "reoccurring dream" that I dream only when I have a fever. I've had it since I was a child.

Hey this reminds me........This may be off topic but it has something to do with ...being sick... fever... dreaming.....My mother says I would talk "out of my head" (that's what she called it)..this would occur with a high fever...I would be awake, eyes open, and say some "off the wall" thing like "I see a woman on the ceiling..get her off of there..." Now my daughter does the same thing when she is sick.....it's like a fever-induced hallucination or something. The sick person does not remember it. Have any of you experienced this?

No, I've never experience talking like that while I've been sick, but here's a weird one (http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40078) that I used to get when I was little and was sick.

I don't recall experiencing anything like that but it sure is interesting. Evidently, from other people's responses, several have experienced it, too, and isn't it funny how some things are just so difficult to explain in words? Kind of like pain. I think describing pain is difficult to do. Words can come somewhat close but in actuality, you just have to experience it for yourself to understand it! I'll have to research the platonic shapes thing. Interesting (but honestly, I had enough "regular" nightmares as a child(and worried my mom with them), if I would have had a dream experience like that, she would have been searching for psychiatric help for me!! ;-)
