i have seen a lot of misconceptions of the wonderful sport of hockey out there (i.e. the fighting, losing teeth, and all that)
so to clear it up if you have a question about hockey ask me

Who's your favorite team?
I can't understand why anyone would play hockey (recreational or professional) without a full face mask. It's just stupid. I mean, there's every chance you could catch a puck or stick in the face, shattering orbital bones or lose your eye.
The only reason I can come up with that professional hockey players don't wear full face shields, is because they have to act "tough" and "manly" and protecting your face is not considered "manly." I can imagine some would say it's because they can't see properly through the cage or shield, but that's just something you have to get used to and you can see fine. I think your face is worth protecting - I don't understand why all the other equipment is required to protect players and they don't require full face shields.
So why do you think professional hockey players choose not to wear full face masks?

for the first question i would have to say the minnesota wild because i have to represent
and i still don't get the face mask issue. being a goalie, i just wouldn't be able to step out on the ice without a thorough covering of my face for obvious reasons.
to be honest, the only thing i can think of is really the manliness factor.

Haha I was thinking about starting this exact thread the other day....
Anyways if your a Minny fan than I guess that makes us semi-rivals, as you see I am a Canucks fan. Don't worry though Im not a bandwagon fan and still realize they are both great teams. While manliness could be a large factor in the helmet issue, the lack of respect between players has gone down. This has resulted in a lot more cheap/head shots and injuries, Jordin Tootoo's hit about a week ago is a prime example of this. Granted I always thought Tootoo was a dirty player.

Of course being a Vancouver fan I have to say that if Luongo is playing at his best there wont be many teams that will beat them. Minny could make it far, I can't see Buffalo going too far. Providing they make it in I would like to see Montreal do some damage.

minnesota has been playing pretty well, hoping we can take it all the way.
i got a deal with my dad about getting a better tv to watch the series with if we get in it

Okay. I over looked the Habs and it seems they still have to play NY and TO to get a spot. I'm going to definately watch on Saturday when the play Toronto. I hope the Canadiens wipe the floor with the Leafs, using them as a spring board into the playoffs. That'd be so sweet. :bigteeth:
Roster check, I only know a couple of guys on the team but hopefully they'll have a decent run in the playoffs so I can start aquainting myself with the team. Ahh, brings back the fond memories of childhood, watching Pat Roy make amazing save after amazing save. I hope their current goalie is half decent. :|
Yeah, i have a special place in my heart for goalies, I used to be one on a girl's hockey team.
Now I can't wait for Saturday.

Sorry Flostsam but the Canucks just secured the third spot!!! Dallas here we come!
Btw a massively important game between Toronto and Montreal is about to take place, go Montreal!

STUPID TORONTO! Regardless of that situation I am definitely spending a lot of time on Monday researching the Dallas Stars.

Wow what a game last night. Tied 4-4 in the third and it went into quadruple overtime. Now a normal game is 3 periods long, this one was 7 , with about two minutes left in the fourth overtime the Canucks scored. Roberto Luongo also faced 76 shots, and made 72 saves, I don't think hes human.

Well boys, looks like we got ourselves a threeway rivalry, cause I'm a Flames fan!! I do have to say though, good work on the part of Luongo last night. That's a lot of shots, and f.ck the stars anyway! And f.ck Ananheim too, I hope Minny kicks their feathery little Duck asses. Flames play Detroit in about two minutes, Go Flames!
Pastro

Well Im going for the Flames in that series, however from what ive seen it doesn't look to be going so well. But its just game 1, the Flames can bounce back.

I was up till 3 am watching the Canucks Stars game. I went to bed during the intermisson between the 3rd & 4th overtime. That was one hell of a nailbiter of a game. Let it be known that I HATE Dallas with a passion...almost as much as I despise the Leafs. Why? Mike Modano. I was surprised to see that bitch still plays for the Stars. And I was also surprised that I still knew a lot of the Vancouver players.
I watched the Calgary/Detroit game tonight too. Even though the Flames lost I was very impressed by their goalie Kiprusoff. That guy looked like a contortionist out there stopping the puck.
I officially still like hockey. :bigteeth:
Someone tell me about those lines behind the goalie net. I'm assuming that's a safe zone for the goalie when he plays the puck behind the net? And the goalie crease looks so puny now. What else has changed. Before I quit watching, back before the strike, I know there were talks of altering certain aspects of the game to create higher scoring chances. What else have they altered? Please tell me now so I won't be shocked by some new rule or alteration to the game.

The lines are there to show the goalie were he cannot play the puck, he can play it behind the net but not inside either of the trapezoids[I think thats the shape they are]. If he plays it there he gets a penalty.

Canucks take it in overtime again!!! Jannik Hansen played very well in his second NHL game ever, we were outworked in the first two periods but came back in the 3/overtime. Taylor Pyatt had the game winning goal.

Those Vancouver games are amazing. That goalie of yours is damned hot Pastro.
The only way those games would be better is if it were the Avs duking it out with the Canucks. (it'd be the greatest excuse to break out and wear my Colorado jerseys)

Yeah Luongo>Everything. Sucks the Avs couldn't make it in, Detroit vs colorado would have been fun to watch.

Im not sure who I'd want to win either. I have no particular feeling toward either team.
Ducks won the first game. I watched the last bit of it. It was more interesting than I thought it'd be.

I'd rather have the Senators win just so a Canadian team could win the cup.
And I don't think I need to share my disappointment with that winning goal between our Canucks and Anaheim that last game.
Pastro

Dont remind me about that one goal :(.
But the Sens are the only other Canadian team other than the Canucks that have not won the cup, so I was fine with them losing.

Sorry if someone's already asked (I haven't got long on here to check) but I've always wondered why the referees in hockey always stand by and let fights go on. There's vid on youtube where the commentators are talking like they're at a boxing match saying stuff like, "he's given us some good shows in the past". I don't know if they still do this, but there's loads of fight vids between hockey players all over the internet where no-one seems to try to stop the fight.

I can't speak for the refs, but if I were a ref I wouldn't want to immediately dive into a pile of enraged men who bear sticks and helmets and have blades on the bottom of their footwear.

i just realized that i left this thread high and dry, my bad.
in regards to the fights, the refs only intervene as soon as someone hits the ice because as vex stated they don't want to be in middle of two grown men fighting. they try and let the fight die down a bit.

So they still treat fights the same today?
Vex Kitten

Basically, but the players can get charged and fined huge sums of money for fighting. Most fights never last that long and it's easier to just let them die out.
