Yeah, and if there are some low-primal organisms, that seem to show resistance, we'll blast them away!

Hate to burst the bubble... its twenty light years away. Even going to the nearest star outside our solar system will take a stupidly long time. The universe is such a ridiculously large place...

But still... pretty good that scientists have found an equivalent place.

God, I almost hope they don't find life. Especially if its evolved life. If they somehow found a way to get there by warp speed or something, (yeah, I know... Too much Star Trek) then whatever creatures they found there would be dissected and tortured by teams of Scientists just to see how they work. And if its advanced life, like us, more than likely the gov't really would try to destroy them.

A Starship Troopers-esque war, filled with cheesy propaganda and the slaughter of thousands of soldiers and aliens... sounds like fun...

Chaos, I'm sure you haven't watched too much Star Trek, because if you would have then you wouldn't be assuming such things. Remember all those alien fleets with enormous armadas of gunships capable of annihilating anyone to stand up to their might? I doubt they'd let some puny Earth government even close to their energy-shield surrounded planets. :content:

what if there was life on that planet and they looked just like us? What if they are here now and visiting and have been for years? How would we know if they looked like us?

Anyways yeah, I saw that this morning on yahoo. You think they would've come up with a better name...go figure

Exactly what I was thinking. Damn... I was always thinking I was born at the perfect time, with all this technology blooming and what not. But now... crap, I wish I was born a few years from now and see how this planet discovery turns out. Oh well... maybe I'll just get to live 120 years, and I'll still be able to see what happens.

Anyway, this is very interesting. I hope we get some updates soon.

I'm surprised they found this with the equipment they have now. Too bad the Terrestrial Planet Finder project was canceled or I'm sure we would find a lot more of these Earth-like planets in the next few decades. Though I think we should spend some resources terra-forming Mars, since it's actually probable that we'll be living on it someday.

This era really does not have much use for astronomy. In the past astronomy was used for navigation and was valuable to humanity, and astronomy will be possibly used in the future for space exploration. For now, it's just a science of curiosity.

I think it's very important, though. Like you said, the information gathered may not be of much use for this era, but many of us have to think about the world our children are going to grow up in, and their children. Such a science of curiosity could prove to be a "science of the continuation of humankind," in the not-to-distant future. It's best to get as big a head-start on it as we can, don't ya think?

Wouldn't it be something if they found evidence of life on another planet, in our lifetimes! That would be so cool; just about the most significant discovery in history. I doubt we'll get around to travelling there for quite a while, so they'll be safe.

Yeah I agree, the information we're learning about the universe and cosmology will be of use in the future. What I mean by that it can only be a science of curiosity in the present era is that astronomers and astrophysicists are not going to get any government/private support or extra funding besides that for the purpose of intellectual pursuit. I'm sure if we devoted enough resources to it, we can find out what dark matter and dark energy really are, find many other terrestrial planets etc. a lot faster. But it's not going to happen because we in this era of human development can't use the information for profit.

Whats amazing, is that life on that planet would be naturally superior.

Its 50% larger than earth, and has more mass thus a more powerful gravitational field. Any lifeforms on that planet would be naturally stronger and faster. Not to mention that Gliese it self is very old yet still entirely stable, they'd of had many more billions years to evolve/advance than us. Plus it orbits Gliese in 13 days, thats very fast. The faster you go, the slower time goes around you. They'd also have a naturally longer lifespan. Couple that in with the time they've had to evolve/advance and their natural superiority, and you've got one hell of a race. That is of course, if, hypothetically speaking, it does have lifeforms.

Even if it doesn't, it is truly, truly amazing. I'm actually very excited for this.

I can honestly say that I hope they find some interesting stuff on this planet. It's about time.

I will admit that intelligent beings would be extremely creepy just because of the fact that we wouldn't initially know how advanced they are. Some how we'd have to learn their language etc. It'd just be a really creepy situation.

They better give this place a good name. 581 c is probably the lamest name I've ever heard for an Earth-like planet.

Umbrasquall

They aren't moving fast relative to anything actually, because they are accelerating around in the orbit. It might be that they are moving fast relative to the Earth, but in that case they would perceive humans as having longer lifespans and we would perceive Glieseans as having longer lifespans. However, if there were Glieseans, they would be stronger than us because of the gravity difference.

Speaking of evolving, humans really could have come a lot sooner. We really didn't accomplish much until starting a few hundred years ago. If all of Earth's history is written in a 1000 page book, humans managed to change the face of the planet within the space of the last letter of the last word on the last page. That's pretty impressive if you think about it.

Not to mention technology grows exponentially so we'll only keep advancing faster and faster.

I wouldn't be surprised if worm holes were proven in my life-time.

I hope, if there is intelligent life on a planet that close we reach them first. Cause they will probably dissect us first and/or take us over if there techs are greater. But, morally I hope we would get along and trade techs and cosmic secrets and rapidly elevate our evolution in awareness. Chances are we and they could trade our secrets of anatomy/biology and forgo the dissection process. Why cant people contemplate friendship over war?

Marvo

Either of us would be the most intelligent, and like on earth, the intelligent and smart lives, the other one losses.

Umbrasquall

Well, if a race is intelligent enough for it to have morals and social codes, then peace would more more likely.

Marvo

I guess so. We can just hope, that they are either as intelligent as us, or something close.

taltho
04-27-2007, 04:56 PM
That would be the best case scenario Marvo.

I just hope the Chinese gov don't find them first cause they may try and reeducate them... but if it happened to the Chinese gov...hum.

Like the dinosaurs?

Who says intelligence is always the optimal result in evolution? Lets say the planet Has life, maybe stupid jellyfish can live better then any smart creature could. Anyhow, I think it is extremely unlikely we will find a society on it, that's for sure. (since we have had society only in the last 20.000 years of our like 6 billions years of existance (of earth)).

look at human history ... every time one group finds another they attack

Umbrasquall
05-02-2007, 01:51 PM
Yes, but you're being pessimistic here. If humans don't have morals and codes we'd literally attack each other on sight for survival, every time, even our own family members. I'm just saying that peace is more probable since we are able to think and rationalize our choices.
