How come gas burns blue?

I guess i can try to use my limited knowledge on the subject, but i think its because gas burns at a higher temperature than certain other materials, so when the reaction between a heat source and gas happens the flame is blue rather than orange, indicating a higher burning temperature.

Now, im probably completely wrong, but from what i learned back in school i think thats probably why.

Correctomundo. Not many people know this but you can get hotter than white hot. It's blue hot. It occurs in new stars. Bit irrelevent but whatever.
