View Full Version : what does it take to feel alive

..something extreme? you hear people say things like, "The cold wind against my face makes me feel alive."
..not me. for me, just looking up at the sky makes me feel alive.
or sitting down with a hot cup of coffee..(in my case, probably a Caramel Macchiato :0)
or walking down the street, or something as simple as looking in the mirror...
this "alive" feeling I believe is probably a sudden burst of awareness. and I believe, for most people, it would take something as extreme as a gush of cold wind in the face to cause such awareness as opposed to a lucid-dreamer!
so I'd like to know...what makes you feel alive?

I find that I need a balance of everything. Sadness, happyness, anger, joy, pain, fun...
If I feel too happy for too long I figure that something's wrong with me and suspect that pain will soon follow (it's the pattern of my life), so I do a few "doces" of pain by doing crazy stunts where I get hurt and feel like a moron.

Having Paperdoll post somthing on feelings. LOL
I think you are right. With awareness comes a lot of other good things.
If you allow yourself to sleepwalk through life without becoming or trying to become aware, how much have you missed.
But I guess if you do not care then you reaaly are not missing anything. Just in the peoples eyes that are aware. They say ignorance is bliss.
What makes me happy, You sy looking up at the sky. I can relate,I like to look up at the clouds and ,well just that look -at them without a worry in the world. Even if it is brief.

Everything
Also remind yourself that we're not talking about "being alive" in literal sense as in "not being dead" we are talking about "sense of existance"(existancw wherever),
"sense of presence" , "awareness. So every single thing you lay your eyes apon, or everything single thing you even feel with your eyes closed, or even things you dont feel or touch.just..sense should ultimately make you feel aware, as it confirms your presence in the ever existant and ever lasting presence of the all, which is everything.
Quite a simple concept actually ^_^

Getting a really good buzz at three in the morning and looking at the stars on a clear night. Then realizing that I'm looking into the past, and feeling so so so very small. That's when it really hits me, I'm alive.

I sort of agree with will.i.am
Sitting on a rock by the beach at night - looking into the stars
And you start feeling... well... philosophical about your place in time and space.
Thats the feeling of being alive, for me

Being alive...
To me it's realizing that in all eternity of human existance, no matter how 'civilized' and 'progressed' we may become, and no matter how many new things that are taught, discovered, and destroyed, we will never, not one person, know everything. The concept of our limited knowledge makes me at ease but uncomfortable at the same time. Perhaps it's the curiousity that maybe we are really, unimportant and overshadowed by something bigger that makes me uncomfortable, and the ease that maybe we are better off not knowing anything.
Think about it for a moment. We are a speck in this universe. We have fought primitively, even today, for something as rediculous as land and 'power', not realizing that we may just be wiped out any day by some cataclysmic event, or brought to nothing-ness in an instant. Some people do not realize that there are bigger and more spectacular things than a roughly circular sphere almost 13,000 kilometers in diameter with a breathable atmosphere. Big deal. I'll bet there are a million more like it, some with sentient beings, some with microorganizisms, some completely destroyed. I'm not talking about god or something here, I'm talking about existance itself. There is no physical way to feel non-existance, so who would care if we didn't exist? That is creepy...
If there were no humans left, we could no longer ponder our existance--but if there were no humans left, we would no longer realize our existance.

pain: i don't remember ever feeling more alive than when i was watching my fingers dangling by threads of skin.
love: there's something about driving to or away from someone you truly care for. i can't explain it, it just gives me a rush.
art: any kind. books, music, paintings, sculptures, movies... when i get overwhelmed with art i'm on another level.
creation: when i create something, be it a piece of art or a weld i feel a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
hunting: the feeling of a connection to nature is overwhelming. hunting an animal with senses that are far superior to yours with a bow and arrow is unexplainable.
danger: anytime i can hear my heart pounding in my head is a good moment. i.e. boxing.

The things that make me feel human (or perhaps more than human) are fairly simple things, like nature or music.
I live in Australia and I deeply love this country. I live real close to Mount Ainslie and I have a lot of memories of walking through the golden brown and powdery blues and greens of the bush.
Also, there are some songs that I hear or play sometimes that just melt me, and that's a great feeling.
. Pondering existence and what else is out there doesnt do much for me, in fact a lot of times it's kinda frustrating, like a bubble of thought in my mind that Im fearful to touch lest it pops.

The things that make me feel alive would have to be waking up in the morning knowing I have a good life, Listening to music, helping someone, reading a book, taking a walk, and when I write poetry or stories.

Yea but i have never done that.
I used to remember at a really young age, maybe about 4 or 5, I would always look at my hands in fear and I would say or think to myself "Oh No, I'm Alive!" Because I new at that age that I was actually living and new I would have to die to go back. And I feared death since a very young age.
Now that was a fearfull way to feel alive.

Giving birth to my child is the meaning of life for me. I created and witnessed a new life, a being, with feelings and needs come into this world. I think all procreation of any kind is a sign that we are all alive and for a very short time.

It's really strange that emotional pain can feel almost pleasurable at times.
Vunerability makes me feel alive.
The thrill of the fight also.
And invisibility! Dissappearing into shadows and watching people looking for you walk by you feet away is amazing.

Actually, what you think and what is actually true are two different things. What makes everyone feel alive is special and different, and a lot of people have posted their views here. Awaken's could be correct, or Gwendolyn's could be correct, or your interpretation could be correct. Who knows?

Everyone is correct in this case, because the question is based upon perception. It's like asking someone what his/her favourite colour is...
I chose free-thinking because it brings me great joy to know that my mind is in my hands (or head, I guess), not Paul Martin or Dubya's.....or God's!
I think the question focuses on emotion. What makes us euphoric, sad, blissful, angry.... is what makes us feel like more than just mindless drones.

Well...what makes me feel alive...
Death
The end of our lives make as feel frightened but what we should do is accept the cycle of life and live for the present instead of living for the future. We are all going to die, but we are alive now, and that's all that matters. The idea of death makes me feel alive because it makes me laugh... it makes me laugh with all the little things that we think that are important and it makes me live the little thinks that really are...

I agree with Joseppi (and others...). Being aware of my own mortality makes me feel alive. This can have the opposite effect for those who have no hope though I tink.
What makes me feel most alive though:
1Awareness of God
2Awareness of the love of my friends and family

Interesting topic!
Here's more ways I feel alive to get the ball rolling again:
-smelling the fragrance in a field of blooming roses
-tasting fresh baked bread (or muffins) with all of my tastebuds at once
-feeling the skin of a beautiful woman -with whom I'm in love!
-seeing a child's grin after they complete something for the first time
-hearing well arranged music on surround sound!
... it brings me great joy to know that my mind is in my hands (or head, I guess), not Paul Martin or Dubya's.....or God's! [/b]

taking in a deep breath (or smoking... though i try to avoid cig's)
understanding stuff... learning stuff...
just being should make us all feel alive... the problame is that LOTS of people have fucked with this notion (to create a big fucked up society, religion and lets not forget the worst of them all TV!!! and i can go on and on about this...)
that is why today we have to invest time and effort to feel alive (how fucked up is THAT?)
it has to do alot with fear as well (as some people mentioned on this thread... fear of death and also fear of anything alse (dont do drugs they'll kill ya  )
dont be a sheep

My parents keep trying to convince me how 'bad' pot is for me...I *KNOW* it's not good for my physical body, but I really don't care! I don't overdo it, so where's the problem? I do my job to the best of my ability (which is a pretty damn good job!), I go to school (though I'm not very interested in most of it), and I'm not antisocial or depressed or any of the stereotypes associated with drug use. In my opinion, my mental health takes a certain precedence over my physical health (even though I'm actually very healthy, physically). I would be more miserable torturing myself saying NO every chance I get to smoke pot. It's not a problem, it doesn't get in the way of my life. I don't wake up and think about wanting to get high before anything else! Demonization is far harsher than rationalization. The folks can't see that because they think differently - but they seem to think I need to see things exactly how they do...They would rather see me safe than happy. I could get hit by a truck tomorrow, and then what would have been the point of avoiding every little possible risk I could think of?! LIVE LIFE. Do what it takes to feel alive! Just don't hurt anyone! :)

I would have never know you smoked pot...still, not for me. I wouldn't say I've been brainwashed, but the stuff parents/media tell you about really affected me as a kid.
Though...I'd probably be a lot more "normal" (for lack of a better word) smoking the stuff :o ;)

oh belive me... you've been brainwashed :D :o
but it's you're choice to say "well... i'm too afraid to try it..." OR "i'm dont really care how it feels so i'm not gonna even bother"
and if that's not it... learn what you can befor trying any drug (cuz YEAH some of them might not really be safe for you...)
and still... it's your choice and yours alone!
a change of preseption (via drugs meditation or LDing) gives an extra something to your viwe on life... wether its true or false it does'nt matter
if there's more to life then being a 100% ok kinda guy and not taking any risks and just getting on with it ok with you... go a head

What satisfies you is the correct way to go. Resisting is not...
I'm glad you've chosen to make an informed personal decision. That is the way to go.
