View Full Version : Marijuana and dream recall/lucidity

I'm a daily smoker, usually going a day between sessions at most, and most of the time it's done at night. I've read a bit that says things such as alcohol and pot tend to restrict one's ability to have dreams, or at least to recall them. I'm new to the whole concept of lucid dreams but it is something I'm quite determined to gain control over.

With that said, if I were to simply not smoke at night and go to bed with a clear head, would my ability to recall dreams increase? Is there anyone who can testify to this fact? Is there any evidence that leads to the opposite conclusion, (that is, that smoking could improve my chances of reaching lucidity?) Any and all comments or thoughts would be much appreciated.

EDIT: my mistake....http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showthread.php?t=34540&highlight=marijuana though if anyone cares to add to this thread that's cool too :)

Marijuana decreases memory in general, so yes, your dream recall will suffer. That kind of damage is usually permanent, however vitamin B6 stimulates the brain.

Anyway, I know the general consensus is that marijuana hinders dreaming, and I've experienced this myself. I've always wondered why, it seemed weird to me. Probably something to do with short term memory. Anyway.

Just today I was going in for a nap, and decided to smoke out directly before napping. Everyone who smokes knows sleeping while high rules. So I'm sitting there, and I decide to try a WILD despite weed hindering dreaming. I figured it couldn't hurt much. After about ten minutes I felt my body become tingly and I realized I was beginning to enter sleep paralysis at this point, which is wonderful because it's difficult as hell to do that. After it seemed like I was hearing auditory hallucinations, I started moving. The problem was of course that doing a WILD is scary enough sober, but while high it's damn near frightening.

Take the wigs advice

.Also i think SKA, Posted wilding with marijuana on that thread or in one similar to that.

He's always a good person to ask in any case when it comes to drugs. :) ( hes dutch)

A year ago I had some medical problems, and was treated with morphine, both intravenously and later in tablet form for several weeks. During these weeks, and for a long period after (several weeks/months), I did not dream anything at all.
So it might be, that drug use inhibits you when it comes to dreaming in genral, and thus makes you unable to have lucid dreams.

I have had LDs on pot in the past, though they are usually much more chaotic and difficult to remember. Striking when you do remember, but usually impossible to describe in words.

I have a lot of sleep troubles and often take Lunesta (a sleeping pill) to help me go to sleep. I have noticed that it cuts down my recall, and makes it impossible to LD until it wears off. If I sleep in, I can still WILD in the morning, though.

Marijuana will effect your dream recall in a negative way. You may very well become lucid, but you probably won't remember it very well (or at all). Don't bother (unless you're lucky enough to be one of those people, but if you are, you wouldn't be asking).

truth, as i've said, I'm a daily smoker. though since gaining foot in the dreaming realm I've cut back considerably. I haven't smoked in over a week now, which is the longest break I've had in about 6 months. After having my first real LD experience this afternoon I'm in no rush to smoke again to be honest.

I was gonna make a thread but im glad this is here.
Ive been smoking a J a night for the past year and a half, but now its summer and ive got a job and ahve access to much more money, im practically smoking three henry's a week.
I dont want to cut back, but I want to achieve a decent amount of lucidity over the summer. Does anybody know of a drug or herb that combats the effects of marjuhana on recall?
Or is there anybody that smokes daily and still experiences frequent lucidity?

lol. This is so wrong. Marijuana actually helps prevent alzhimers, and it generally only affects short term memory. If you stop smoking you should be dreaming the next night

Umm, yeah I definately won't argue marijuana decreases short term memory. But there is no damage done by it unless you are one of those hippie burnouts that started smoking in high school... and, well, has rarely stopped since. It's a insanely safe drug, and takes a LOT to do any lasting negative effects. Hell, it's impossible to overdose on pot. If only every drug was that safe.

I actually find that after smoking for any period longer than a few day's I usually won't have many dreams if any. But after I stop I usually end up with more vivid complex dreams than when I started. But that only lasts a few nights before they return to normal.
