I'm looking for a reality check that doesn't involve items (clocks, writing) and that isn't the breathing through the nose thing....

try to push one hand through the other or try to float or fly or something that you could only do in a dream

One other check I did so far in 2 dreams is the Matrix RC. I feel behind my neck for the jack thingy. Most likely if it's a dream..U'll feel it there sticking out of Ur skin. Or look at Ur arms for them..LOL.

Bite your hand? That's what I use to do when I wasn't sure...

the thing is.. in my dreams I don't believe I would find anything in the back of my neck, nor do I think my hands would move through eachother.

I usually feel pain in my dreams D:

U would have to train Ur mind toward that, get the movie and watch it until Ur sure that there will be something at the back of Ur neck. Believe it's possible..:o.

Why not the breath through nose RC? It's the best one, except for the one with watches and text.

Reality checks are difficult if the actual world you live in is crazy! I got woken up in the early hours of morning, to what I thought was the sound of a helicopter. At this point I didn't know if I was asleep or awake. Eventually I decided to look out my window and there outside, is a big ass helicopter with it's spotlight on! I don't know about you, but its not everyday I see a helicopter sittin off outside my house.
Now ofcourse I know it was just the police or someone tryin to find a person or something happening, but at 3am in the morning, you don't know what to think!

there is a reason I specified otherwise...
the nose thing doesn't work for me, and I don't always have text near me.
Although, this morning I had a false awakening and knew it because I looked at my clock and it changed times randomly. Except as soon as I realized it my vision went black. It's weird when you are looking at something and when your eyes close unexpectedly without closing.

I see Jamous. I find that the nose-rc fails from time to time aswell. The best one for you, is to try and put your left hand through and right hand, and when you do it, even in real-life, you have to really believe, that it will pass through. I recommend this as your primary RC, and if it works, then do another random RC of the book, like the nose one, reading, matrix, or whatever.
The whole premise behind that nose RC is you are breathing in real life so in the dream world no matter what, you would be able to breathe. From this, I can't see how the nose RC would fail. Can anyone explain to me why?

Even though you can breath in real-life, your dream-mind creates an even stronger impression of feeling, that feels like you can't breath. This does not happen often, but sometimes, it does.

Any tips on how I can get myself to do the RC's during my dreams? I do them during the day whenever I think of it, i've been trying to make a habit of it, but thus far I've been unable to remember to do them in my dreams.

Make it a habit, so that you do one everytime you see something unusual. Even on TV. If you see a horror movie, remember to focuse on the scene, check out the enviroment, and do a reality-check, every now and then.

theres always the common sense RC. think - is it a dream?
most of the time when dreaming, if you even think about dreams, you will relize its a dream.
looking at your hands is another simple RC. look for anything strange
i've read people also count their fingers.

Close one eye and look at your nose through the open one. If you're dreaming you won't see it...or so I'm told.

I tried that in my last dream. It was there.

I had a friend whom I told about the finger reality check. And the next night when he checked his fingers in a dream, he was missing both thumbs!

Ive noticed that you can become immune to RC's if you do them often enough. I had 3 lucid dreams in the last 4 days and they were all started by the plugging-your-nose method. But this last time it only half worked and I could breath for a second and then not breath for a second and I had to try it 2 times to "wake up" in the dream.
Other ones have done this too, like switching on and off a light switch. At first it worked but then the lights I tried would flicker instead of not respond or not act abnormally at all. So that one I stopped trying. It looks the nose plugging is about to stop working as well. Anyone else have tings like this happen?

ya i use the hand check, I check to make sure that my hand looks like it should and that i have all 10 fingers. In just the last lucid i had, i gained lucidity because i realized i only had 8 fingers.

Whenever I want to know if I am dreaming or not, I lightly pinch the skin of my index finger between my thumb and middle finger. I always feel SOMETHING in the dream when I do it, but not normal pain. Thus I then realize that I am dreaming.
A bonus is that it's really quick and inconspicuous so you can practice it a lot while awake without being looked at like your crazy :p

You can practice reaching out with your mind, and trying to feel your enviornment. Because the dream world has a different feel to it. This is a reality check that has worked well for me at times. Most likely you will need to already be used to the way your dreams feel, in order for this to work well. so this is probably not good for beginning.
