Hi, for some reason or maybe I missed it. I can't find my old thread for this topic, anyway I think this is the proper place to post it in the first place...;).So far I have been taking a break from the light and decided to guage my actual REM interval using the light/timer because I keep waking up from the dream and just before the light goes off. So far I found that I wake up 2hrs later from the 2nd REM period(dream) and 1.5hrs later after the 3rd one(dream) and an hour later after the 4th one(dream)...LOL. A pattern there:p.

Last night I set the timer for 1hr 45min, 1hr 15min and every hour after that. I woke up after the first REM and turned on the timer and went back to sleep. I slept through the 2nd REM(no dream recall at all) right till the 3rd REM period. The light went off during a full blown dream and woke me up....:p. I don't know if it did the same in the 2nd REM. I adjusted the brightness lower for tonight.... I also bought another timer in case I wake up after the 2nd REM then I'll just use that one with the 1hr 15 min timing.

Seems that there is a change in the 2nd REM period last night....I woke up exactly..I mean exactly 1hr 30min later. It may have been that the previous night's timing was 2hrs because I took quite long to go back to sleep so by the time I really fell alseep and woke up...the whole thing took 2hrs. I will set the 2nd REM and 3rd REM intervals at 1hr 15min and see how it goes.

If it's succesfull I will have 2 lucids per night from the 2 REM periods...hope it dosen't change too much over time...;). I think anyone can rig up what I did except for the electronics circuit(ready made stuff)that I think U can get from eg.radioshack that controls the duration the light is on which is like 4s minimum which I currently use when the timer switches. I will put up a vid of it on Youtube :).

I don't understand what this is about... Can you explain again, or link to the previous thread?

Thanks.

Hi...sorry about that. I have been using an external light to try and induce lucidity but couldn't quite get it right the first few times. I then discovered my REM interval few nights ago. I only focus on the 2nd and 3rd REM periods for now as I haven't had the opportunity to guage the rest. If their intervals stays constant there is a very high chance of being lucid regularly with the light...:p. Btw I posted a vid of how it looks like...the set-up and all..looks complex but it's just that I use long wires...:D.

Oh, this is great. In the future I will probably try this too. good luck!

I was right, 2nd and 3rd REM I woke up exactly 1hr 30min later. But I don't remember seeing the light in the dreams..maybe I set it too low now:(. I will also increase the duration of the on time.

Not so good for last night...I got woken up by the light. I was already coming out of REM sleep although still dreaming but it was fading out then the light went off.... I think it was because I was more tired than usual so the REM period could have been shifted earlier. Anyway I've made provisons to take care of that if it happens again. I'll set one timer for the usual timing at 1hr 15min each REM. Then I'll set the other one for 45 min apart because when I do get woken up by the light...chances are the next REM will be 1hr apart maybe less.

How about this idea:
You set up the light to turn on every 5 minutes ( after an initial delay of about an hour, so you can fall asleep ). You set the light to be low enough so that you will not wake up from it during non-REM sleep.
during REM sleep you sleep more lightly, and so in theory you will be able to see the light in dreams.
so the light should be:
light < than to wake you from deep-sleep
light < than to wake you from REM-sleep
light > than to be unnoticed in the dream.

This way you will not need to know when your REM cycles are.

Thanks for the idea imj. I might give this a try again, only using your idea of doing it only after I have already slept some.

I built a shelf at the foot of my bed and put a strobe light and a couple of police beacon lights on it, which I have all plugged into an extension cord that runs to the head of my bed, where I have an Intermatic timer that I bought at Home Depot that controls when they come on. Here's a picture of the timer.

The reason I put the timer at the head of my bed is because I wanted to be able to turn it off easily if it completely wakes me up like it sometimes does.

I've had a difficult time getting the lights just right as one time they would wake me up comletely with no recall of my dreams, and the next time I would sleep through the lights for hours, but would have really vivid dreams

I may try experimenting with having the lights come on every 30 minutes for about 5 minutes to see if the lights can get into my dreams without completely waking me up.

Hi, I din't know REM sleep was light... The timer I have has only 15min segments and I haven't seen any 5min ones around...I may try for half and hour and then 15min later on....thanks for the idea:cool::cool:. Btw I saw Ur website, cute cat...:D.

Hi, I never seen a timer with so many functions...nice! Strobe lights can be harsh and crueler than incandescent lamps because they emit a cold blue burst of light..... U could use some tissue paper to mask out the light if it's too bright. U will have to keep trying until U get the sweet spot everytime. But I think it's easier if U sleep through the night...better accuracy of REM I guess because when I wake up some time is lost when going back to sleep and varies. Btw do becareful with electricity running ontop Ur bed.

Thanks again for the idea imj.

I tried using just my black strobe light which is dimmer than my other strobe light and police beacon lights, as it is just a black light that strobes, and it seems to be working well.

I set it to come on after 90 minutes, and am just leaving it on after it comes on.

As it is not too bright, I am able to sleep through it, while it seems to be increasing my awareness while I am dreaming without waking me up completely, as I am having more vivid dreams while using it.

You could leave the black light strobe on all the way and at the same time put the other brighter one on timer...that way U'lll have less chance of waking up when it goes off and higher chance of noticing it when Ur in REM.

Alright...last night again woke up a bit before the light from 2nd REM after an hour. I went back to sleep and the light went off again about few minutes later or so I thought. I went to check and another hour had elasped.... I couldn't believe I fell asleep for that hour because I din't feel I had slept..was pretty weird feeling...I guess it was light sleep and the light went off. Tonight I'll have no choice but to set the timing to 45min apart and then subsequent REMs 1/2 hour apart...kinda tight.
