Thank you! Blessed be and happy All Hallow's Eve to you! It's a very sacred day for us pagans. The veil between the worlds is thinned and we celebrate death. It's not as morbid as it sounds, I promise. :-P More accurately, we celebrate the neverending cycle of life and death, the circle of the seasons, birth and rebirth. There's a great essay by Wren Walker here (http://www.witchvox.com/wrenwww/wwsamhain02.html), if anyone is interested.

I had my costume on earlier (a medieval dress) and I got to pass out candy to the little ones. I've never done that before; I've always had to work every year. It was so neat to see all their costumes and hear those little, bell-like voices. :) This is my favorite holiday!

I hope everyone else is enjoying it as much as I am. And being safe and smart, because I know that some people use this holiday (as they use all holidays) as an excuse to drink to excess and get stupid. So please, be careful! Stay safe and have fun. :)

Well, its now 10:20 pm e.s.t. Time to load the shotgun and wait for all the buggers that want to roll my yard and destroy the pumpkins me and my son had so much fun carving!

See you in the morning!

Allow me to take this opportunity to share with you how much I HATE Halloween, and all holidays for that matter. The commercialism DISGUSTS me. The cliche after cliche after cliche. (can you tell how much I hate cliches?) The same goes for Christmas and Easter. Ignore me, please....

I too have a strong disliking of Hallowe'en. Christmas and Easter, however, are a-okay in my book!

I'm not going to ignore you! I do have to agree with you. Holidays are way too commercialized. I used to work retail at the mall, and every year they have their Christmas decorations up the day after Halloween! Never mind Thanksgiving! I try to ignore all the hype because, quite frankly, it disgusts me as well. I used to like Christmas, and then I worked retail during the Christmas season. "Jolly" season, my ass. Everyone is grumpy and bitchy and they feel the need to take it out on you.

Bah!

Do you do anything special on holidays, Paperdoll?

Ahhh... Here we go.

Holidays perspecitve on good or bad all depend on how you view the situation, however, essentially it is for the better benefit of us all.

Wether you find holidays to be far too "cliche" or "cheesy" or that they are all simply commercialism, our world needs these things. In fact, I don't think we have enough of them. Also, I find it very unfortunate that many other countries do not have them.

I too once thought that all Holidays were simply for advertising and just took advantage of people's wallets. But on the essential scale, the eventuality of every holiday is for the greater good for us all. Holidays are times that we can all typically loose ourselves in the moment, because we all live our lives for far too many goals; setting ourselves up for expectations. During Holidays, you can let go, and enjoy the time. See children laugh and smile, loving families gather, etc. For those whom are unfortunate to not have families or the time to appreaciate it, will sometimes be given respect, in lu of it being a holiday.

For those who typically bash holidays, sometimes they simply feel lonely, for lashing out at emotional gatherings like these are good times for us all, and may create jealousy for those whom are not able to have it. I myself am lonely and havn't had a decent holiday with a family for sometime, but I still appreciate them.

The financial matters in holidays are great for everyone. Free candy given out to everyone! Manufactuors for candy make more candy, make more money from selling their candy, employee's (imagine someone working at a candy factory and how they feel when Halloween comes, more work=more money) get more money, distributors sell the candy; such as Wal*Mart, then the candy is given back to the public along with the money (the money you spent on candy, is essentially given back to you if you have a trooper of a kick Trick-or-treating their ass about).

Tax's and the financial growth for every holiday is excellent for our economy; there's nothing better (besides war).

And what's better than seeing happy people on holidays? If you find it disgusting that people are happy, then you're most likely jealous.

The down sides to holidays are these people who hate them, because there reasons for hating holidays are exemplified on these dates and they then tend to vent out there frustrations at the world. "Fucking Halloween!" "Stupid Christmas!" "Valentines Day Sucks!" Although, in the majority of cases, these people are not happy. You will not often find someone who has a good relationship going (that isn't a cheapskate) say, "I hate valentines day" because the only real reason to hate holidays is out of envy, jealousy, or perhaps anti-socialism. Although the anti-socialism is a perpetuation of the minor motivations I have just stated.. typically.

Yet again, this is just scratching the surface of things.. I just thought I'd throw in my quick two cents on holidays after Paperdolls comment, because it makes me sad when people hate holidays, because they shouldn't; they are good.

With that said,

Hope I was enlightening,

~ Michael : O'nus

How is it a joke?

Because commercialism, you feel, deters the real purpose of holidays and saps all the entirity of the nature of the holiday? If so, then I would say I personally might agree.

Although, in this civilized and culturised world, we need a system of economy, ethics, etc. Holidays are essentially healthy for everyone, and a pre-requisite for holidays that we should have.

Focusing on the politics of holidays will deter anyway you look at it if that's your prime focus. But if you are able to look past the politics and the commercialism, that I agree do deter the purity of holidays, then they can still bear good fruit.

Would you agree..?

I hate holidays, birthdays - my birthday, even.

Well, not hate. But I think it's silly to attach these kinds of meanings to days on a calendar. I'd have a hard time explaining it better than that, but suffice it to say that I try to give people their birthday/Christmas presents a couple of days/weeks/months(!) before or after the fact if I can get away with it. Basically, I give the presents just a little while after I get 'em... whether it's before or after just depends how on-the-ball I am. ;)

I do like Halloween actually - lots of candy around and kickass movies on TV. I love horror flicks. If you know where my avatar's from you might've caught that... :D

It was soooo fun...
My friend was in a santa costume and when we found the girls in our class (dressed up as like hookers or something) he said to them, "I'm santa, do you wanna be my ho ho ho?"
It was awesome and we got free powearde and a shitload of candy... how can you hate that?!!

I think what O'nus is trying to say is that despite all the commercialism and politics behind holidays there are still many positive aspects. However, you have to chose what to celebrate and what not to. You dont quit a job you like just because theres one person pissing you off, you tend to ignore that person or work your way around the problem. If you hate something just because of its mass commercialism then your bound to hate most things in this world(or atleast the U.S.) because thats what we've seemed to focus our lives on, money. My point is, you can just ignore the commercials like you do in every day life and still share the love and happiness that come with every holiday.

I love holidays...I'm thinking about adopting more of them into my life or creating my own...any reason to eat in drink in excess is decent to me, but than again I really dont need a reason...I did enjoy them more when I was little.

Cheer up Lost Soul  . Your special soul mate is out there, I promise!

I was lonely and heart broken and ready to give up hope until I found mine!

In other news, made it throught the night with my trees and pumpkins intact. Didn't have any disturbance, which is suprising since it was in the 60's and clear last night.
I am now signing of to go take my pumpkins out into the woods for all the little animals to munch on!

::hugs Paperdoll::

Thank you for saying that.

Commercialism is bullshit... but holidays are just sad excuses to pervert what were once certain special or revered days in to godawful consumerism.

Shitty part about it, though, is that everyone is doing that every day. We consume consume and consume some more. Me, personally, I've stopped caring about money. As long as I'm alive, and having a decent time, and doing something that I believe in, that's all that matters.

I think our government is far far more decrepit than most people want to believe. Whatever though, the facts are all out there, usually right under noses, if we want to look for them.

Anrold Swarzenegger admitted to attending neo-nazi parties, and said he admired Hitler.

Random scary fact....

I'm going to take off soon though... hit the road like Hunter, and play the political gonzo journalist and fight to get our country back from the plague-masters and slavers that run this place.

Go to miami, fight the FTAA, make a damn difference...

www.stopftaa.org

Learn about your world, see the things that are going on, and make a difference. People were active in the sixties, they weren't going to let the government fuck them. Somehow... we got lazy and stopped caring, and now we just want someone else to do the work for us. Well... I'll be at the front line, burning American flags telling the FTAA to eat their slave labor plans.

Oh yeah... and my Halloween rocked.

A couple of my friends got got drunk and thought it would be funny to sit on top of a restaurant that's next to the highway that runs through my town and huck ketchup and mustard and eggs and shit at cops cars. They nailed a cop trying to catch a speeder, covered his windshield in mustard. They hit like 4-6 cop cars total(drunk kids, ha), and then the cops caught 'em. They told them they had to search his house for a meth lab(What?) and they woke a bunch of drunk kids up, harassed 'em a little, broke my friend's pipe, and then made the two dudes that nailed their cars with all that shit clean it off with their clothes... and they left. No tickets issued. Funny shit.

I was already gone at that point... I just drank and macked on girls... and went home. Was fun though... but that story was just too great. My friends are fucking nuts.
