View Full Version : How do you feel about meeting DV members in person?
Hi everyone, I love you all so special, you're good, I love you.
I was wondering what peoples takes on a DV meeting, or convention are. I'm just curious. I'll actually be meeting Lucid Seeker in a few weeks in Vancouver, Canada, and quite look forward to it. I saw on the pictures thread, one of Howetzer, Seeker, Lucious and someone else, meeting in Amsterdam I think. and that seems like quite a great idea, especially if you live in the same region.
A little strange I admit, but interesting, as we all do share a common interest.
Ironically I have had many a dream about a fiction DV convention or meeting, one in which a DV member said I was dreaming, but I stubbornly refused to beleive him.
Anyway, thoughts?

Don't get me wrong, there are lots of very nice people here but, there's really only one member I absolutely want to meet in person and that person already knows who they are.
On the other hand, I'd kind of like to meet a few others but I probably would not go through such lengths to do so.

I'd be far too shy. Although it would be nice to see and meet everyone, I'd be a nervous wreck.
Wonder who that person is..
I think its kind of weird meeting people off the Internet. But have done it. Down where I live there is a forum I use, for people in the south, who are interested in cars, and I joined the forum 4/5 years ago and met up with a dozen people from there, and a lot of them are now my really close friends, hang out a lot with them. We have a weekly meet every Wednesday night, often go out drinking together, and even work with about 4 or 5 of them.
So I think it's maybe not a bad thing, depending on circumstances, for the regional forum I am on, everyone is from the south, UK and always meets up on there, and we encourage new members to come to our weekly meets, which happen to be outside down on the seafront, and you get to meet a lot of new people all the time. But for a worldwide forum such as this, I think it makes it a little harder to do so as there is not that constant interaction with people outside the forum, if you get what I mean.
Having said that, if the time and location were right, I would do so I think :)

It is easier in some respects to talk over the Internet. But I feel much more at ease in person than I do, say, over the phone. I don't think nervousness would be my problem.

Why are you guys coming all the way up here?

I think that any meeting would be very awkward.
It is one thing to talk and stuff on the internet but it is totally different to do it in person. I just think there would be a substantial amount of awkward silences, and it would be weird to find something to talk about. In this case, you can only talk about lucid dreaming for so long, and then what? An awkward goodbye?
"So..."
*long silence*
"Er... so I think I'm gonna go now"
"Oh, okay..."
"Bye... see.. I mean talk to you later"
"Bye."
It may be less-awkward if there was a group of people.
Why would it be like that? I can talk for England me! And I am sure others are the same, there is always a lot to talk about when meeting new people, hell thats part of the fun that you have so much to talk about as you invariably know nothing about the other person.

I think it would be awesome to have a few DV meetups in some regions.
I think people would get along nicely.
When i was big into the seduction community, i emt quite regularly with guys from there. we would go out clubbing and have a blast.
Ithink there would be lots to talk about since we all have one thing in common: LD's

I might post random mad stuff in the chatroom that I wouldn't say in real life. My avatar and signature don't reflect what I'd really wear. I think smilies help a lot too (e.g. :D).

That's the thing. I think it'd be cool to meet some DV members but I think that - no matter who it is - it may potentially be awkward because people can be drastically different in person than you expect them to be.
But that's not to say that there will be nothing to talk about. I'm sure we could think of something.
Though, if it's at some kind of DV convention or lunch event then no one would be too one on one if they didn't choose to be.

Good point. There's no real-world way of conveying a smile.
Well, I think we could easily get over our akwardness, though it would take time, and be just like any other strangers getting to know each other, with one common interest among us. Though a worldwide meeting would not be practical due to vast distances hehe.
Well, actually Cold Blooded, I'll be travelling there with my father, for a business meeting. I get about 3 days alone in a fancy-ass hotel there, while the old man gives talks and meets farty executives around a mahogony table in a conference room. Technically, I'll take buses or cabs, to attractions and wander the city (in a good way). I found LucidSeeker is travelling to Vancouver with his family, and since I have family there, I said WTH, off to Vancouver we are! As to what we'll do, who knows, he'll probably laugh at my accent, and I his, but that's how it goes. We'll have fun.
After a day or so with LucidSeeker, we'll travel back to the U.S, in Washington State, rent an RV(camper) and go off to some state parks, and hopefully get a tent to do some authentic camping.
We're you thinking of possibly all 3 of us getting together, in the Vancouver area? just another idea...
P.S, Ranma, how far are you from Vancouver?

Ah, great to finally see a thread about this bro, i think that we need to get as many DV members as possible to come out for a meetup in vancouver, it seriously would be a great day out, i think despite it maybe being kind of awkward when first meeting, were sure to be getting on throughout the day. I think it would be great if anyone else could come.

You know, I've heard the 'it's going to be awkward' thing so many times, but I myself have met someone from the internet (two at the same time, actually), and it was a blast. Just because you joined the same community doesn't mean all you have to talk about is lucid dreaming.
And bro, I would come, but me being 16 without a car severely limits me getting around, and the parental thing always comes into play. "You're meeting someone from the intarnet, oh noes." Sucks for me, good for you guys cause you get to spend a day in Vancouver. :D I'm sure there'll be another time, I don't plan on leaving this community anytime soon.
Also, if you want, I can give you a list of places you can go to see in Vancouver. I can be your virtual tour guide. ;)

You'd be surprised how quickly the awkwardness evaporartes. I've probably met more DV members IRL than anyone on the forum. It does kind of go that way.
Er...Hi....What's up? But by the end of the evening, it's as if you'd been buddies all your life.
The meeting referred to at the start of this post was me, Lucius, CT, and Lucid Apple(from LD4ALL).
We met for dinner in Nijmegen, Netherlands while I was in Europe on business. It was awkward for a few minutes, but at the end, we were talking about the mysteries of the universe, lucid dreaming, and plenty of other interesting issues. I wish we could do it again, I've lost contact with all three of those guys! It was a fascinating evening.

The only people I've met have been Je33ica when I was down in San Diego in '05, and Mickeys Elbow... because he found my DV card when we were at school.
There are a number of people I'd like to meet and hang out with. A "convention" would be fun if we could have some stuff planned ahead of time so we didn't succumb to the "Um, well..." syndrome that often plagues conversation. I like to see what people act like behind the computer, and not just how they type. Don't we have a "What are you like in real life" thread somewhere? I though we did...

I wouldn't mind meeting someone else to talk about lucid dreaming with. It's a really fun subject, and nobody else I know in real life does it, so I'd certainly welcome it. Assuming, of course, that it was someone groovy.
I'd have a drink with anyone passing through Northern VA or DC. If you get too annoying, I'll just stick you with the check. :D

The trouble is there is an age gap between some of the members, which isn't as much of a problem on the internet but is different in real life. I personally wouldn't go to one as this is a seperate part of my life that, in my opinion, should stay seperate. I think that I'd also feel really self-conscious as (as far as I am aware) I am one of the younger members of DV.

What I've learned in my short year or so of adulthood is that age stops mattering. When I was, say, 15, the only adults I was comfortable being friends with were... my parents! All that's gone now, as if it was a different lifetime. My boss is in her 50's and I so desperately want to hang out with her! :p So unless you are very very young, you will not have a problem with age.

WARNING: If anyone meets me in person, i may come on strong, it's what i do lately, if your quite i quiet or shy person, it may scare you.
Me: " Hello new person! So, let us tell each other about each other"
New person: " Um..."name", a sentence or so max"
Me: " Oh cool, ok so im joe and.." about 100 sentences which i then use to branch and go completely off topic about really random things, i'd end up talking about how different sizes of oranges reflects condensation in our atmosphere or something ridiculous, all from the fact i like rowing, trust me i'd get there somehow"
New Person:" Wow......"
Me: " Na na na no! I haven't finished speaking! Let us all go back top my house for a sleepover minus the sleep as i prefer that environment, but i warn you there all be sexual inuendo from me no matter what movie we watch!"
New Person:" You've only known me a day and you want to invite me over for a sleepover?"
Me:" YES I DO!!! I WILL FEED YOU I SWEAR!! also i will give you drink that is fizzy if you like that, i dont, i dont like the feeling in my throat with very fizzy drinks, also i can't drink them fast enough as i like too. In summer when it's hot id prefer to drink fast, i prefer like apple juice, thats super nice, but also i like apples, which is like the only fruit i like. You know i hardly eat any fruit, i'm surprised im not dieing of scurvy or something, though i guess i do have quite a lot of veges so that'll ake up for it mostly...back ON TOPIC."

There you go putting yourself down again, I mean honestly, how can you do this to yourself so much. That was meant somewhat jokingly.
[Edit:] And listen to Mes, darnit, GH!
I have no choice but to.
You dont have to have a cam to sign up and chat with others though - This is not a closed invitation to webcam owners only. Everyone is welcome to sign up and chat :)

Sorry that's because its a public chat room so had to put a password on it to stop people outside DV coming in who we don't want in there. If we are in there again tonight will post the room and password in here. We should try get more people in there!!! It was funny!!

Hey look I switched Internet browsers so I can double quote for you lol.

It doesn't work with iSight, which sucks a lot.
Whats iSight? Is that just an Apple Browser?
Alex D
07-22-2007, 06:24 AM
iSight is the webcam/mic that's built in as standard in Macs. Absolutely brilliant quality, just compatibility seems to suck.
Ah ok, that sucks then! I have an external Microsoft cam which seems to work ok I think. You can still come in chat though, you dont need a mic/cam.
Its a lot faster than the flash chat on DV too :D

I was able to meet seeker. It was no surprise to find myself in the company of a very stand up guy.
I will make certain it will not be the last.
I live by T Joe  He is awesome. We have so many of the same interests.
Art, Lucid dreaming, guitar. He is a well rounded dude so it is pretty hard not to have too much to talk about.
I met Peregrinus in Pittsburgh. She is awesome. Because I don't know how to trust a map our meeting was brief. She is so cool.
I would love to meet many of the community.
I almost got to meet Aquanina.
The problem with meeting DV woman is they are all so DAMN cute!!!!

Yaaaaay that was so fun, I'm off to try to find a webcam now, em hopefully it will work with the wireless in the area.. seems to be unstable at the best of times. :(
I have internet at home, on that pc where I don't have admin rights... could I just set up a wireless connection from that? Hmmm seems unlikely.
Yeah you can, you should be able to pick up a wireless signal!!
Anyway, was fun to finnally get you in there on cam too!!!
For anyone else wanting to join the site is http://www.stickam.com/ and click on chat rooms and look for the room Dream_Views and the password is dreamviews
Me, Mes, NeAvO, Goldney and Alex_D are in there all on cam, except for Goldney haha!

I live in Fredrick, MD and work in DC. Maybe I can catch up with you someday.

Believe me, you won't be missing much anyway.
yeah sure, will post up here when we all get set up :D - There are a couple like Goldney and Meggy who dont have cams, they just laugh at the rest of us speaking lol.

Hahaha, no problem. It wasn't my best playing but hey, you guys enjoyed it. I actually do know all of Nothing Else Matters but it's hard to go past the part higher up on the neck on my acoustic. I'd need my electric to do that. :D

I'd probably love to meet people from DV. It's just I know that all of them people wouldn't want to be meeting me because they would rather want someone of the Opposite Sex, because friends don't exist on DV. They woudn't say it, but it's what they would think.

No the déja vú. is accurate.
Perhaps a dbl. post is as bad as 75 chat posts?
I don't believe it is. :)
When I hang around younger people it becomes quickly evident of their adolescence. Many of the members on this site are very young but seem very mature. I would love to hang out with a bunch of the younger members and enjoy their youthful exuberance.
The entire community Team seems like part of a family. I don't know of any of those I would not like to meet.

1. Go find a dictionary.
2. Go look déja-vú up yourself.

For fear of someone moving this to senseless, I propose we set up a thread in the lounge or somewhere specifically for stickam.com chat, although I do think that this is still somewhat on topic. In fact I'll go make one right now.
