So I went to one of my favorite beaches the other day, did some beach combing and found some nice shells and glass and shiney stuff... Yeah I do that, I like stuff like that... every dragons gotta have a hoard right?

So the sky was beginnning to look ominous, and my sister said she felt some rain, so we picked up our pace and made the mile walk back to where the path back to the parking lot was, on the way not really looking for stuff now I found something, a marble...a blue beach marble its been eaten away like a regular peice of beach glass but its a marble! even though its surface is frosted now, you can still see the cats eye in the center, it also lost about 1/10 of its size... I think its one of the neatest things i have found, other than the cheese doodle shaped green glass i found and the 1/4 inch pure white chonch shell. =)

But I came to think, I wonder what that marbles story was, how it ended up in the ocean, who held it and played its last game. I duno hehe.

Any one else have any random thoughts to share? or perhaps some neat thing you might have found on the beach or in the woods?

I can remember always wondering what kind of butterfly or moth a wollyworm turned into.
Well, a couple of years ago, we found one in a flower we had brought in for the winter. He was not dead, just a little lethargic.
If was too cold to put him out, and my wife and I being the aminal lovers that we are decided we would try to keep him alive.
We put him in a small box and would go out looking for greenery he would eat. It got really difficult later in the winter.
Sometime around December, he finally decided to cocoon up. It was a small hairy cocoon, I guess he used his own hair.
We kept a close eye on him because we didn't want to miss when ehe emerged.
Finally, sometime late Feburary he split open.
He was a medium sized white moth with a black criss-cross pattern on his wings.
Luckily for him, it was warm the week he emerged, and since moths only live for a few weeks anyway, we released him outside.

Oh my god, that was the sweetest thing I've ever heard! My heart just got all warm and fuzzy. :) I'm the same way. I'll go to great lengths to rescue any sort of animal. I remember one year when I was living with my ex, we found a ladybug that had gotten lost in our apartment. He took a piece of paper, scooped her up, and set her on a nearby tree outside. We said our goodbyes and life resumed.

A little later in the year, we noticed a rather large shadow in the corner of our room. When we got a closer look, we saw that it was a group of ladybugs! There must have been at least 40 or 50 of them! Dave almost passed out laughing! Apparently the ladybug we had helped a few months before had told all her friends that we were cool people. We took our time and carefully brushed them all into a tupperware container, and we went outside and set them all free. We felt a little bad though, because it was the end of September when the weather around here is just starting to get a bit chilly. They seemed ok, though, and we parted company.

Two days later, the massive shadow was back. All the ladybugs had come back again! This time, it was colder than usual outside, so we relocated them to the computer room and let them live with us. It's funny... they never left that room, either. And then, one day, they were just gone. It was about five years ago, but I still think about them. :)

It is that time of year again here in Tennessee, time for the ladybugs to find warmer places.
My wife and I lay in bed on lazy Sunday mornings and watch the ladybugs crawl across the ceiling.
Our ceiling is made from toungue and groove planking, so there are grooves that run the entire length. They like to get in a groove and walk.
Sometimes they will run into each other and have to change direction. I don't know how they decide which one will leave the groove.

We watched on this weekend scare the sh*t out of a fly. It just kind of walked up behind it and the fly jumped about 3 inches.

One thing that is really neat is that they can take off and land upsidedown on the ceiling.

Ladybugs rock! So do mantises... mantisi... yeah. You know, the praying bugs? :-P I watched one kick the crap out of a scorpion that was twice its size! No wonder we practiced the Mantis style in my martial arts classes. They're pretty badass for being such skinny little guys.

Believe it or not, in Germany, they are considered good luck and are sold at festivals!
Yeah, they do bite!

I also enjoy beachcombing fer shells... good stuff is really rare here in Southern California, though. The beaches are pretty much combed out. Not much of a bug guy... ladybugs and mantises are good for gardens too 'cause they eat the pesty bugs like aphids and stuff. Lately I've been enjoying the awsome sunsets during the nice transition from summer to fall... Simple pleasures are the best! They make me realize how much I take for granted and how spoiled (blessed?) I really am. :sunflower:
