It is generally excepted (though not universally) that most (if not all) Myths and Legends have some grounding in facts and history.
This is a two parter: Do you believe this to be the case, and, if so, list some as well as how you think they started.

Well, yes. What's are myths? They are stories. Stories are usually about your own experiences (unless you're very creative). So myths and legends probably came about because of something that was experienced, and then exaggerated or twisted a bit.
But there are a LOT of myths and legends in the world, so we can't overgeneralize about any of them.
if anyone casts doubt on Robin Hood, I will have to kill them
*edit*
as for listing them
here's a fairly long list of English Folklore

Ynot we are talking about myths here, not about absolute fact.
ok, saw your edit. I forgive you.
I don't really think the Trojan war was started by a beautiful woman... but I think it did happen.

I saw a painting of Helen, actually. She wasn't that hot.
Paintings are never hot.:P
I couldn't just say "I don't really think the Trojan war was started by a woman" now could I, because that wouldn't be politically correct.

Long enough for me to miss Garett creeping across my screen.
I think that "Myths" are often not given enough credit.
They may not be "factually exact" but they are often very valuable on another level.
That's why humans will spend millions of dollars to indulge themselves in something like the Lord of the Rings.
We need these myths.
Scientific fact is only half the picture of reality.
EDIT: Sorry, Keeper. Realised I haven't answered any of you're questions.
