What does 'Ivy League' mean?

I am English and have never come across the term before. Can anyone help me out?

I think it is something to do with schools or universities but I don't know.

It's for sports officially, however the Ivy League is best known for their academics. They are among the most prestigious schools in the world: Harvard, Princeton, Yale...
