if you don't already know, Robert Rich makes awesome soundscapes that are fun to fall asleep to. they're ambient, not distracting. check out his albums Drones and Trances. in fact i love all of his albums, but those are like 30 mins per song. he's even mentioned in Stephen Laberge's book on Lucid Dreaming. i once WILDed on accident listening to such music.
also Alio Die makes some unbelieveably good ambient. one of his songs 'password for entheogenic experience' is an hour long. it is not just a mundane loop. the sound of a distant bird call comes thru the dense atmosphere sometimes. his album 'sit tibi terra levis introspective' is also really good.
my favorite ambient:
Aidan Baker
Alio Die
Biosphere
Brian Eno
Echoes of Nature
Gas
Oophoi
Pan American
Robert Rich
Vidna Obmana
some of these are rare and underground collections, but are worth looking for. Some are more melodic, some more natural, some very abstract.
anyone else have recommendations for ambient?

I was listening to some ambient works of Aphex Twin once and fell asleep and immediately became lucid - although, it was more like an out of body experience because I continued from my chair and walked around my house, but I was definitely dreaming. I only listen to a little electronica, but a guy called BURIAL from the UK has some good tracks you might want to check out.
I should try it more often, but I don't want to get tangled in the wires of my headphones and die.

also thanks to anyone who adds to the list because i can always always use more ambient.

any fans of ambient sould check out one of the grand old masters of the genre - Steve Reich
http://www.stevereich.com/
click on multimedia and listen to 'Music for 18 Musicians'. He brought it out in 1976. The whole album is one continuous track; one musical phrase repeated over and over with evolving variations.
it's great work music - I play it while I'm painting and it sort of propels me along with its insistent, compulsive repetitions.

Sounds very interesting. :)
Do you think it would be possibly to WBTB, put ipod earphones in your ears and put the music on softly, then fall back alseep and within the dream hear the music, and realise your dreaming?
Kind of like a variation of the LED flashing lights during REM that are sometimes used for those commercial lucid masks?

Ethanescence, that's a cool idea and i believe that's similar to what Robert Rich had in mind for his music. just to experience it as a backdrop to your dreams. in any case it does work. but i find it's actually easier to replay the music from memory once you've heard it many times. i've had lucid dreams with my favorite ambient music playing in the background just from memory. anyone else experienced that?
little nemo, Steve Reich is also good, thanks for mentioning. i just haven't gotten into much of his stuff yet. just one album i think.
omg how could you not mention Pete Namlook & Steve Roach, and Tetsuo Inoue!
