If you had a choice between aliens coming to Earth or aliens not coming to Earth, which one would you choose???

I would choose not coming to Earth because the aliens would probably be more advanced and they could enslave us...

That isn't coincidence. You used reason (ie, that I am a frequent contributor to the Off-Topic, that I was online, and so on) to hypothesise that I would post first and I did.
If you didn't use reason, you guessed, and the reason you chose me was because my name appears throughout the Off-Topic and is startlingly memorable due to my rugged good looks and sartorial elegance, as well as the two Cyrillic letters that a Westerner from the US might not see so regularly.

There might be other reasons. Essentially, not a coincidence.

...I don't even know why I objected to that. Oh noes, internets have me.

The thing is. We shouldn't want anyone from another planet to come here for they would be superior for they found us before we found them.

We are sending out signals into space just in case someone will pick it up. It would suck to be killed because we were found. Hiding is always a good idea.

It would be totally awesome if we one day would find a planet with life on as long as we don't kill em all.

We should make then praise us!

We have a choice whether or not aliens come to Earth? I always thought it would be their choice.

Either way, it'd depend on the aliens. I'd probably have to meet them for lunch on the moon and see what they're like before I decide.

We could at least stop spending money (mainly your money in the US) on finding our possible doom.

That money could feed poor ppl instead, right? Or wth, give them to me and I'll make good use of it :)

Space exploration isn't necessarily about 'finding aliens'. It's scientific discovery of the universe, of course we should spend money on it.

Any cultural clash ends in disaster... Look at human history.

Yeah. I mean, look at the British Empire in India. Abolishing native customs like burning widows with their dead husbands, or executing people by elephant stomp. Introducing law and order, a centralisation of power, beginning the abolition of the ridiculously unfair caste system, creating a unified India with the basis of industry (the railways, for example) that has allowed them to thrive in the modern era, even after gaining independence (non-violently, Americans pay attention).
Bastards ruined India.

If aliens came here they must have superior intelligence to us. And may treat us like we treat animals. Although I think that aliens would go crazy for our nuclear bomb.

May. This is entirely speculation. And we're going to have a fundementally different subjective outlook to them. The entire history of humanity, its evolution both biologically and socially, wouldn't be there.

I agree that if aliens come to us, reason suggests they will be technologically superior - at the very least in the field of space travel.

To then make the jump to them 'treating us like animals' is somewhat extreme, and in no way a good enough reason to stop trying to communicate with them - for the vague chance they exist. If we don't try to find them, we're essentially giving up any scientific discovery in that field.

If we don't try to find them, we're essentially giving up any scientific discovery in that field. Well they would only come here for technological ideas, or land, I don't really see what else. Also I think humans on there part would treat them like animals. What would organized religions say? They are not children of God, blah blah blah. Same thing that happened to Native Americans. I think we would be ready to coincide with aliens when we are ready to coincide with ourselves. Which might be the reason aliens aren't exposing themselves to let our enter their galactic federation.

Again, they have an entirely different perspecive and subjectivity to us. I can't assert that they would 'only want land or technological ideas'.

The Native American issue isn't a good example unless the aliens are colonating the Earth. The whole cultural clash between the settlers and the natives was largely exacerbated to the extent it reached because it was a constantly rising influx of newcomers who all wanted land and who all wanted prosperity.

I think you're getting somewhat fixated on one possibility, that they arrive and are essentially humans with green skin.

I think you're getting somewhat fixated on one possibility, that they arrive and are essentially humans with green skin. If they look anything apart from humans, it would have the same affect. Imagine if they tell us that they created us, and etc. It would cause chaos. I don't see the need of contacting aliens. It only highers the probability of something wrong happening. What about the issue with Africans? They were enslaved because they looked different and were looked down upon because of their lack of technology. An alien would come here not to make friends but for something of their benefit. If they are that different than biological life on earth, we cannot be compatible.

Siиdяed

They were enslaved because Europeans found black African kings with slaves who would sell them for very little money. Human rights weren't the same as they are today, social morays and ethics were different, and it became an acceptable trade.
They weren't necessarily enslaved because they looked different.

You're guessing at possibilities and then asserting them.
Why couldn't the aliens only want to make friends? You and I have already proved that social ethics and principle can change wildly within humanity, in that two centuries ago it was acceptable thought that black people were acceptable as slaves.
Why could this alien race not have an entirely different set of ethics? Why could it not think it alright to seek out Earth just to be friends?

Anything we assume about aliens is entirely hypothetical. Ultimately we have to find out the truth through scientific discovery, which right now entails of sending out signals in the hope they'll be picked up.

Whoever said an aliens ethics would be good? They could bring wellness, but could bring disaster. Why risk it if we aren't in dire help? I'm all for alien exploration, that is until we are at peace as a species.

No. This is vaguely what I was saying, we have no idea as to what these aliens are. Speculating that they might be bad - as was done earlier - and as a result refusing to attempt any discovery of them for fear of the consequences would be to bury our heads in the sand.

I agree, it would be better were we to wait until we are a unified planet before attempting to reach aliens - should they exist - but realistically that isn't going to happen. You can't tell the scientists of this generation to stop working on something because the Earth isn't ready.

I think relations with aliens would soon degenerate into hostility and war, either way. Human stupidity always finds a way. Either some religious fanatic is going to bomb the mother ship, a conservative politician is going to stir up a riot, negotiations will collapse because the government can't guarantee anything from the general population, etc.

So if the aliens are nice, things will probably fall apart.

If the aliens are evil, things will probably go to hell, since they are almost assuredly superior in technology to us by even getting to our planet when we are hard pressed to get to an adjacent planet, and they want us for food and/or resources. I mean, aliens won't go out of their way to kill us unless they see us as a future threat or as a food source. In both cases, they're probably going to let us grow a bit for a bigger meal or possible alliance. If they just want to wipe us out (unlikely) they'll do it. The possibility that they want Earth for colonization is ridiculous. Besides the fact they probably already have terraforming technology and ways to create hospitable worlds, what are the chances that our planets conditions are suited to their needs (or even tastes?) Nope, they will probably harvest us (or our planets resources if they can't use us) People always think that the aliens want to harvest humans, but in fact may only need a specific type of tree or even mineral. Maybe they'll even try to take it peacefully, but of course, humanity, in its best intrests, will probably screw it up and end up extinguishing the human race because we wanted to keep our plutonium (or whatever they're harvesting)

In my opinion, a cooperative alien federation is probably the form of life/government out there, because it just makes sense, and we know it does, but we are probably looking like a belligerent race, and if we don't, well, everything over there has probably gone to hell anyway since they probably are just as fickle as us. We even look belligerent to ourselves.

I think first contact with aliens will go our of control and result in a war, which I call (borrowing a Mass Effect term) the First Contact War. If we are lucky enough to be spared, then we will probably come to our senses.

Anyway, I think contact could happen at any time, if the aliens have "warp" technology and the like, it's only a matter of time before they find us...

Anyway, as crazy as this sounds, I trust the government to keep it under wraps and thank them if they are doing so, as long as they are representing us peacefully and are working to cement relations. If the aliens are belligerent, I trust they are making plans for our defense.

Personally, screw the media and the public on knowing about aliens, they can't handle it.

PS: I think humanity working together will only happen after contact with aliens. We're very competitive, and we always need to rally behind something, wheter it's a cause or a nation. Once we encounter another alien race, then we'll feel that racial pride, (and probably screw things up with xenophobia and humanity's interests rather than the "galactic whole")

I suppose it depends on their nature. If their were a group of herbivores, likely with food plentiful, they may not know the aggression and jealousy we have. In fact they may be so shocked/afraid/disgusted they'd steer well clear of us.

Personally i would think if Aliens have come, they have not made contact for the simple reason that the majority of Earth is simply not ready. We hate each other for a start, we need to mature for a long while before we can face such a new era together.

If you imagine we have inter galactic travel in 1,000 years or more. We would no doubt make policies on it and likely one would be to examine a culture closely before making contact. Firstly to see if they are similar to use in any way and if technologically they are equal/more advanced.

Although with power comes even more greed and corruption. If we suddenly developed Inter galactic travel in the next 100 years, i have no doubt we would flatten any lesser civilizations for the raw materials their world would offer.:(

Heh. Xenomorphs: The most badass-looking aliens ever designed.

I don't know if the Governmental Elite could handle the "possible global security threat" that would come with dealing with a civilization that we have absolutely no information about. If we didn't go on a military offensive, right off the bad, we'd probably get caught with so many bugs, probes, cameras and spies up the aliens technological asses, that we'd provoke them to fire upon us first, just for getting on their damned nerves. :chuckle:
