Subliminal Messages

Subliminal messages are a very powerful tool for influencing the mind, if the mind is accepting of the message. While the ability to brainwash someone or make them do something against their will is impossible, subliminal messages are a powerful tool for self help.
.BackgroundThe most famous study involving subliminal messages was James Vicary's 1957 study that announced that messages flashed on screen during a movie could be used to influence people to buy cola and popcorn. This claim was later refuted and James Vicary admitted to fabricating the results.

Dr. Johan Karremans adjusted the claims of subliminal messages, announcing that subliminal messages worked if they were goal oriented. His study flashed the words "Lipton Ice" on screen fro 24 milliseconds and when given a choice of drinks, more than a statistically significant group asked for Lipton Ice tea over the control group. The messages, however, had no effect on those who were not thirsty to begin with; thus the term 'goal oriented'.

Subliminal persuasion is still a controversial topic, there is evidence that it works and evidence that it doesn't. Many members of Dreamviews have had lucid dreams after listening to subliminal messages, however there is not sufficient study to prove that it's not a placebo effect.

.What are Subliminal Messages?Subliminal messages are messages or images that the mind doesn't pick up on in the conscious state. They are flashed on a screen too quickly or encrypted in such a way that you will overlook it. An audio message can be played backwards, encrypted, or simply spoken too softly to be picked up.

An example of subliminal advertising

This was on a Nintendo game, most players didn't notice the G and the A that can be seen in this screenshot. The rest of the word "GAMEBOY" can be seen if the player moves to the right. This is more of an Easter egg than a subliminal advertisement, but the principle is the same.
.Subliminal Messages for Lucid Dreaming

In September of 2007, ninja9578 performed a rather large study (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showthread.php?p=536324#post536324) on the effects of subliminal messages on lucid dreams. It was already well known of the effects of subliminal messages, he was attempting to see how the messages should be encrypted for the best results. He concluded that a command in the third person in sub-audible decibel range worked the best.

Using Subliminal Messages for Lucid Dreaming.

Subliminal Message audio files are designed to be listened to before bed. They can be meditated to, or just listened to in the background while doing other tasks. Obviously, meditating works best. You can find several useful files in the Audio Aids Repository (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showthread.php?t=55276). Each files holds messages that are encrypted in different ways, so the newest one may not be the one that works for you.
.How They WorkSubliminal messages are messages that are embedded into a person’s subconscious while bypassing the conscious filters. The subconscious is like a background program that is constantly running through data that you are unaware of. Here is an example that I’ve used before:

Say you are trying to remember the actresses name who played Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, but for the life of you you can’t. You know it’s in the back of your head somewhere, but you just can’t get the information. You decide that it’s not important and go about your day. Maybe an hour later, you have completely forgotten about it and Judy Garland! pops into your head out of the blue.

This was your subconscious working out the problem. You were completely unaware of the work being done, but somehow it recalled the name correctly. We have all had this happen to us, I’m sure.

Types of Subliminal Messages.

Low Decibel Subliminal MessagesSubliminal Lucid 2.0 (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showpost.php?p=536329&postcount=3) and Subliminal Lucid 3.0 (http://www.dreamviews.com/community/showpost.php?p=681185&postcount=1) both use low decibel subliminal messages. These are messages that are spoken in plain English and not encrypted at all, but are recorded sub-audibly. If the music weren’t playing we would hear them as clear as day and recognize them immediately. But they are quieter than the music so we miss them entirely, like trying to say something to your girlfriend at a rock concert. They are obviously heard, they are in the audible decibel range, but our conscious mind doesn’t catch them. You may hear whispers occasionally, but not any recognizable words. Now the subconscious mind goes to work, analyzing everything that we are taking in. It will, eventually, figure out the messages, hopefully, in the middle of your dream.
.Encrypted Subliminal MessagesThe Original Subliminal Lucid MP4 (http://www.mediafire.com/?2eywuevwjcv) used more encrypted messages than low decibel ones. These messages were loud enough to be heard, even with the music playing, but they are recorded backwards. The brain is smart enough to decipher backwards messages, it just takes longer. The theory behind this type of subliminal message is that subconscious mind (the dreaming mind) will decipher it and implant messages about lucidity into your dream for you. While this was cause many successful lucid dreams, it has proven less effective than the low decibel messages.

There is no scientific backing for this type of subliminal messages actually working. The claim that it did came from a fundamentalist christian preacher named Gary Greenwald. He claimed that certain rock music contained backwards messages, specifically 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Another One Bites the Dust.' It was a fear mongering campaign and both Led Zeppelin and Queen have denied that there are messages in those songs.
