Reggae

At the moment in school we are doing World Music. We each have to write a piece in a certain style... the aim being to capture the essence of that style.

I have chosen - as the title suggests - reggae. I will be capturing the essence of Caribbean music. I suppose it should be pretty easy - simply use chords 1-4-5, and put the accents on the off-beats. For inspiration I have been looking at some Desmon Dekker and Bob Marley music.

So, anyone at this forum interested in writing/listening to reggae/ska music? I've been learning a lot about it recently and I like it.

I listen to bands such as the skatalites and the slackers, though also more 2nd and 3rd wave ska/punk and ska-core, cause I'm just a sucker for fast guitar and angsty lyrics ;)

I don't think their is a style of music I don't like and I have a healthy Reggae collection thanks to freinds. I listen to an mp3 mix of 1000's of tracks on shuffel and many are reggae or ska.

Bob is an icon of course. On the Reggae side Lee Scratch Perry is the top of the tree you should be looking at.

There are many facets to Reggae music and many influences, some are very religious and some very secular.

I demand you listen to these artists (I've put a good track of theirs too)

Listen to Oye mi canto by Nore and Nina sky. it's really good IMO. BTW, its really new compared to what you posted. I think Sean Paul sings Reggae and T.O.K

i've always been partial to the rootsy stuff, and the old school dub. i don't listen to dancehall, for the same reasons i don't listen to rap. some tracks a great, but i'm just not down w/the boasting, self agrandizing hogwash, and posing... it's the oposite of the out of sight, out of mind, low key person that is me.

if you are listening to bob marley, listen to his real stuff, not the white boy friendly garbage on the legend cd. scratch a good portion of the stuff w/chris blackwells G'ed up production. -a lot of the stuff w/chris blackwell production, have and original version. -"sun is shining" is a good example. -there's the version on the kaya album, then there's the "we recorded this in an alley 8yrs before" version. they are both rockin' but for different reasons.

check out his moodier stuff, like the 'rebel music' compilation. my personal faves are 'roots', and 'slave driver'. across the entire comp, i loved the way they incorperate blues (especial on '3'oclock/roadblock'), r & b, and funk like it's nobody's business into their songwriting. absolutely amazing how everything comes together. in a way it reminds me of early hip hop w/all the sampled phrases put together. but w/reggae it's musicians 'sampling' concepts ontop of reggae, instead using a sampler, and an 808. -i don't know if that makes sense to anybody but me. tuff cookies. :)

I play guitar in a punk/reggae hybrid band. If I can make a suggestion, write a song using I IV and V chords in a minor key, and put some bluesy soloing over top. I haven't found any music that feels better to play than that which crosses the groove of inverted reggae rhythms with the soulfulness of the blues.

and to the guy/gal who said they like ska-core, you know where it's at. If you haven't heard, check out a band called Streetlight Manifesto. I recomend the song "If and when we rise again". Absolutely nuts!

oooh yeah I know Streetlight manifesto, I absolutely love them!!!! XD Point / Counterpoint is my fave I think.... though the whole album rocks, cant wait till they get 'keasby nights' done right, with the whole new improved sound over catch 22 :)


By the way, who else is also in likes "Edna's Goldfish"? Kinda lovin that band as well :)
