I don't have a problem with the chicken being killed, but the way it was done. I mean, 2 (!!) failed attempts to snap it's head? They should've used an axe or something..... BUT, the way they were talking, it could've been an exercise in being a Survivalist in dire situations when tools might not be available.
It was also carried out in an educational and respectful manner (for the most part), which makes me think it was training.

I read an article somewhere that a man tried to butcher a chicken but it survived. He kept it alive by "feeding" it with a dropper and it lived for about 6 months despite not having a head. Most of the brain stem was intact, which kept it alive.

Nope, I experienced this at my grandmothers farm when I was a kid too.

We also pulled out the vocal cord thingy and it would say chicken-sounds when we squeezed it.

I didn't care that the chicken was dead, I eat chicken all the time. It's just bad parenting to allow children that young to be amused by something so gruesome.

It's the spinal cord getting confused that it's not getting signals from the brain anymore so it releases all of it's stored up electrolytes. The human body will twitch too after death. I'm not saying it's animal cruelty at all, just bad parenting.

The point is more that the animal is killed as painlessly as possible (as opposed to botched job by fucktard rednecks) after being well-treated and is given some dignity in death, I suppose. As opposed to floppy chicken dance.

There was another video before the one with the kid laughing. It was military men gathered around their commander (or so I imagine). He was talking about survival and explaining how to kill a chicken and why it behaves certain ways (hanging it upside down and gently swinging it relaxes it etc).
The only real problem I had with that one is that it took the guy about 3 tries to remove the head from the body by stepping on the head and yanking the body. 3 tried is a bit much and I felt he should've used an axe.
But after thinking about the video and the conversation, it seemed to be about killing for food when tools are unavailable.
It was educational and not portrayed as a "game", so I took back my objections (though I still hated that it took him 3 tries... but in a real life survival situation, you truly might not get it right the first time).

As for the kid, I still think the parent was adding humor to make it less "traumatic". I've done simlar things with my own children though not to that degree. If raising and butchering chickens is a family's way of living, it would be hard to have a sqeamish kid.

But I agree that the one with the kid especially, shouldn't be put out there for the world to see. Especially when no one knows the story behind the video or the reasons for it.

I think what DreamingOfDreaming meant when she spoke of buying organic and directly from the farmers is that you're more assured of the quality and methods used. It's sort of like buying a dog from a Puppy Mill/pet store or directly from registered breeders with an impeccable record. With the one, you don't know of their methods but there's a general reputation of the animals being mistreated... with the other you have more assurances that the animals have always been loved and well treated.
