Is it just my lack of experience, or is this perhaps the most awkward social position anyone can be in? Not just for both of the 'competetors' but also for the poor piece of eye candy that is stuck in the middle.

I am terrified of being any one of these three people, but the likelihood is that I will be.

What is, from people's experiences, the best way to get round such a dilemma? I don't care how corny it is... I just want a solution that pays as much respect as possible to all parties and doesn't resort in any bloodshed.

It's one of those things that I feel poisons the nature of humanity; one of the things that makes me so ashamed to belong to this wretched species. I am wondering if such a heart breaking and gut wrenching disease could ever be eliminated from community at any level.

Getting over jealousy doesn't solve the problem; because whoever is going to snatch the person in question still has to be 'decided'. Note that I use no personal pronouns here.

The person "being snatched" in this case still has a decision. They can decide on either of
the potential mates, or tell them to go screw themselves, in which case your problem would
be solved. Even if you're competing with another over the same person, it still only boils
down to whether or not you get rejected, and how well you fair with rejection then is
the issue.

I might not understand what you're trying to get at. I've been in this situation twice and it
was not so bad in either case. Just an inconvenience, if anything.

I will say this... If you ever end up in romantic competition with somebody else, you have an enemy for life. That's merely if the object of competition is somebody single. If you go after somebody who is already in a serious relationship, which I think is extremely selfish and can be incredibly hurtful (Angelina Jolie can jump in a fucking volcano.), you have induced both suicidal and homicidal thoughts in the other person. You just might get your brains blown out. It's serious business.
