View Full Version : If you're scared, say you're scared

I'm not sure if this has been discussed in past threads, but I was curious as to what everyone is "afraid" of...this may also include phobias.

I love and collect knives, but I am deathly afraid of being stabbed (not cut) by one or having to stab someone in self defense. I occasionally have nightmares of one or the other happening.

I'm fine with decapitation and being impaled (usually thats a 1 strike and you're out policy), but having to kill or be killed by a short hand held blade just doesn't sound too pleasant. :shakehead2:

Now there's a phrase you don't hear every day.

I don't believe I really have any phobias or deep-rooted fears. I can't think of anything that really terrifies me.

I suppose something like being stranded out in the middle of the ocean on a boat or raft all by myself would be pretty scary.

You do realize that when they used to impale people sometimes it would take them like 3 days to die. Decapitation, yeah...you're out...but the whole...having a stake shoved up your ass and out your chest and hanging there for a few days doesn't sound to thrilling to me.

Anyway...I'm HORRIFIED of spiders. I have such arachnophobia. I'm also afraid of stuff I don't know about, like ghosts and spirits...and I get really freaked when it's pitch black. I'm also scared when I am somewhere that I know that if I screamed (for whatever reason) no one would be able to hear me.

im afraid of making others feel sad or uncomfortable. I dunno why, im just one of those people who puts others before myself (of course, not always!) I'd do anything for my friends and family, even if they wouldnt for me.

Hehe...I agree...I think my mind was limited to the javelin through the heart kind of visual...but being "ran through" and the piercing object not hitting a vital organ would be categorized as one of my worst fears.

I remember as a kid (prob 8 years old) my younger brother threw a lawn (sometimes called long) dart up in the air and it landed on top of my foot (nearly made its way through). I think ever since then the idea of a puncture wound gives me an eerie feeling. :makeitstop:

I wouldn't mind decapitation as long as it wasn't terrorist style. Guillotine would be nice, but a long dagger sawing through my neck and artery and all the other stuff, that would be horrible. Dying in a fire would be really bad though, especially if you live awhile after wards. Thats probably the most painful way to die.

i have a couple irrationional fears... one's spiders and the other is snakes. a spider can't do much to hurt me and a snake just makes my hair stand on edge... so i have a very american way of dealing with these fears... i kill every spider and every snake that i see... it's as simple as that.

You knew someone was going to do this to you.

Anyway.

My biggest fear is of being stranded in the ocean, no land or anything in sight. That is the ultimate doom feeling for me, since I would hate to drown, though I love swimming.

Actually, I lied. It's not really THAT that scares me, it's fear of whirpools. Might sound stupid but whenever i think about it or see one on TV i'm gripped by a fear, which I know is unreasonable but happens all the same.

So my worst case scenario is being stranded in the ocean, no land or boat or plane etc in sight, and a huge whirpool i'm being sucked into.

Thats one of the few nightmares i've had that i was genuinely disturbed by. Just the feeling of impending doom....[/b]

Come to think of it, I responded the way I did mostly cause I didn't want to respond to this question, I guess. Honestly, what scares me the most is death(I could probably write a whole book based on how and why I fear it), and from it spawn a million other fears that torment me every single day. One of the biggest of them has to do with purpose and the pass of time. I am nostalgic about the past, present and things that haven't even happened all the time which doesn't leave much time for actually living them. I live a certain way because of the principles I have chosen to honor, however there isn't a moment where i don't wish that I didn't know what I do, and I would just live a normal ignorant life where I could actually be happy, and where I don't get all nostalgic about everything I am missing that I will never get back. I have come to realize that I just can't ignore what I believe and therefore I find no place in the future for me. Since two years ago I have been living out of sheer inertia. I don't quite feel I have a purpose anymore, nor do I see myself going anywhere unless I compromise what I believe and who I am. And I just don't know how much longer I would be able to take a life like this (not suicidal or anything....very far from it, but also very jaded).

I fear loneliness....not present one, but future. Though the present one is bad enough, I just can't picture what a whole life of it would be like (like growing old alone or with bad company). I fear the fact that these are supposed to be the "best years of my life" and I will never be as mentally and physically fit as I am now, nor have many of the opportunities I have. And I fear that I am not making the best of them and will one day regret what I did. That one day I will wish I would have lived back when I had the chance to.

I fear to many things to name....as everyone does. But I thought that I would at least try and name these few... :?

AirRick101

I fear loneliness too, I Have a healthy degree of it. It's more of a spiritual loneliness, when even though you're in a crowd of people, you still feel lonely or at fault or something like that.

To me, the very scariest thing is to get lost in my own mind and actually lose control. Well, more like stuck in my own little world. I get a little schizophrenic this way. I can express separate personalities at will and feel little emotion about it. Lol...that sounded far out, didn't it?? Nah, I'm just able to bring out parts of myself very strongly.
I really fear death, and I don't know why. I don't know if religions are responsible for my concerns of death, or is it natural. There were a few times, especially when I'm mentally bombarded and haunted by various things, I actually FEEL like I'm going to die in a few minutes, either by spontaneous occurence or forgetting to breath. It's absolutely one of the most terrifying things ever. I mean, dying in action on the battelfield sounds a lot better, though I probably don't know what I'm talking about. I'd rather die doing something meaningful, I guess.

I was afraid of heights.

Then I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and I had to help shingle a roof. So it helped me get over it. But I'm still kinda scared of heights sometimes.

Snakes, water, sharks, and hot lava terrified me when I was young. But I went to a child psychiatrist who helped me get over them. Except for my mom who helped me get over the water thing.

I'm scared of few things, I will say. I suppose I do have a fear of lonliness, though (and it's probably why I cried for an hour when one of my fish died). Also, to go along with it, rejection, leading to my desire to please everyone. Neither of those are constantly on my mind, though.

Let's see, anything else?.... nope, not really.

I grew up on a farm, so I've never been scared of snakes or spiders, even though I nearly step on a snake about 3 times each summer - it gives you a frigth I tell ya. Not really that scared of heights, or the dark. I am scared of those centipedes - you know, the ones with the red legs and they do not die no matter how bloody hard you stamp on them, or how many times you chop them with a shovel.... THEY KEEP WRIGGLING!!! argh!!

I'm also scared of getting old, and of becoming an alcoholic, and I'm slightly claustrophobic.

On the subject of being scared of things, there was a guy in boarding school that would get scared soo easily, so once me and a mate made up this huge story about some psycho axe-killer that was on the loose and roaming around all these boarding schools and stuff, it was too funny. We did the story so good that when we went outside that night we were like looking around and jumping at noises because somehow we had convinced ourselves it was true... too funny.

Like Truthbearer, I am afraid of too many things to name. I'm afraid of death, because of the people I'd leave behind. Of course I'd be dead, but still, it bothers me. I'm also afraid of being buried when I die. It's totally irrational, but the prospect chills me. I'm afraid of lonliness, and the unhappiness of other people whom I love (and I love almost everyone). I am afraid of losing my mind.....My uncle has some severe mental problems due to a car wreck and previous over usage of hard drugs and it's always scared me because I know it could happen to anyone...I'm afraid of not brushing my teeth.....I brush them obsessively...after every time I eat. I'm also afraid of bees. Anyway, all of us have our quirks and fears, and there are so many more things I'm afraid of, but I don't want to write a book on it.

Yeah I have more fears but the top one is the main one I’m trying to challenge at present.......

TruthBearer, if you constantly live in fear of growing old, looking back and wishing you had done more with your life, then when you DO grow older you'll wish you hadn't spent so much time worrying about it. imo.

Ditto that! I've made peace with the fluffy ones because they generally leave me alone and they pollinate flowers, but I swear that the shiny bees are just evil! They serve no purpose on the food chain except to be evil with their sharp, nasty teeth and stinger and what's with the yellow Freddy Kreuger motif they've got going on? See? That's EVIL!!

Aside from the evil bees, I'm also afraid of getting older. I don't like the fact that my body will deteriorate to the point where I won't be able to care for myself anymore. That bothers me deeply. I would much rather die young(ish) and healthy.

I know, that is basically what I mean. I spend so much time worrying about things like this, and I don't really do anything about them. I don't take my chances because I am afraid of failure at times and I always over think things till they just don't seem likely enough for me to pursue. Most of my life, I don't live the way that I would probably like to, because it goes against what I believe...

Sometimes I wonder if I'm being misinterpreted by the world and it bothers me on a slight level, but it's not really a nagging fear. I can't think of anything that I am afraid of. Sometimes movies or stories will make the hair on the back of my neck stand up everytime I'm in the dark for the next couple of hours (Saw or the original TCSM for example). Death intrigues me, everyone experiences it so there is no need to fear it. I kind of look forward to it in a non-suicidal kind of way... sort of like the final adventure before whatever is next. Being ready for death at any moment is truly knowing you are alive. To just "let go" is a feeling of profound freedom.
