SA:MP (San Andreas Multiplayer) - you have to buy the game, but the actual online upgrade/patch thing is free. Official site here.

My favorite site has to be dragon gamez. Lots of shockwave games with decent graphics here. Land of Dead is my fav game.

The most addictive game for me is Redbeard though, never seems to get boring.

If anyone puts fucking runescape, I will personally go through my computer into your computer and out of it and punch you in the face. It is by far the worst game ever made, even worse than this game.

I absolutely love to play Nomic whenever I can. Unfortunately, I can never find anyone who wants to play. They seem rather confused at the simple and beautiful idea of a game with an initially minimal, self-modifying ruleset.

I also like roguelikes, one of which has already been mentioned: NetHack.

Who needs 3D graphics when you've got this?

Actually the best free online game is Warsow, a free full-feature multi-platform low-requirement multi-mode multi-map 3D first person shooter, based on Quake style, complete with CTF, instagib, race mode and several others, and many servers worldwide.
