Only 3? I'm not a huge anime fan, but I've certainly got more than 3 (you have to try to not like a Ghibli film). I'll limit myself to one Ghibli film.

      1) Neon Genesis Evangelion + Death and Rebirth + EoE (some people skip eps 25 and 26 and replace them with EoE, which is 25' and 26', and Death and Rebirth--a very informative recap of the series up until episode 24 meant to be viewed just before EoE. However, I find both the TV ending and EoE ending worthy of being watched, the series isn't complete without having watched it all. Despite that, some people still completely skip the original eps 25 and 26). Without a doubt, number one on my list.

2)Princess Mononoke. It probably goes without saying that this was my first Ghibli/Miyazaki movie, but with Spirited Away at a close second underneath it, it is deserving of being my favorite of them all.

3)The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I don't know what made me even consider watching this at first, I would never have considered an anime that was about otherwise "ordinary" people before (preferring more Ghibli-esque stuff), but I was so glad I did. I was blown away by the sheer luck I had in finding this movie. I'm kind of a sucker for time travel anyway, but all things considered, this movie far exceeded any kind of expectations I had. It was and is fantastic.

I have a few others just directly below number 3 that are very close to being just as good as these 3 that I picked, but I'll stick to the rules of the topic.

Well, after reading through the topic and seeing so many people ignored the top 3 rule, I suppose I'll make a larger list myself.

1)Neon Genesis Evangelion + Death and Rebirth + EoE (not going to list the rebuilds separately, they aren't as good as the original series but they are by no means bad, Anno is trying to do something different with rebuild and so it's only fair to judge rebuild by what he is trying to do with the series in the first place. NGE has always been a critique of Otaku culture and the disdain Anno feels with Japanese society, as what he sees it as now is "children wearing men's suits"--the population and culture in his eyes is sick, trying to escape reality with kawaii stuff and trading long standing traditional values and morals for anime and manga along with fanservice. the series and rebuilds have been his effort to wake these people up, so to speak. the rebuilds are not meant to be the same as the original series because he is trying to update the message to what he currently sees as the issues modern Japan is facing. the series was also a critique on the mecha-genre itself, and was an attempt to be a realistic scenario in which teenagers are forced to pilot giant humanoid mech robots and save the world, and what they would experience.)
      2)Princess Mononoke
3)The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
      4)Spirited Away
      5)Steins;Gate
      6)Akira
7)Cowboy Bebop (and movie, Knockin' on Heavens Door)
      8)Death Note
      9)Paprika
      10)Serial Experiments Lain
      11)Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
12)The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (I liked the movie more than the series)
13)Children Who Chase Lost Voices (or Journey to Agartha)
      14)Gantz
      15)Howl's Moving Castle
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      16)Paranoia Agent
      17)Ghost In the Shell
      18)Perfect Blue

Everything from 16 down is something I would describe as being good, but not really my cup of tea.

Not everyone is into ecchi stuff and fanservices so this anime brings those people justice. Not to mention the amount of funny and sad moments are balanced which make LoU entertaining for me. The author of this anime is genius.
True LoU was a really decent anime and was fun to watch, no overly dumb protagonists either (so I like LoU also a lot more than AoT). And if not for my wife I probably still wouldn't know it, not sure how she found it though.

I neither need nor mind ecchi moments so I'm fine either way, unless the anime has this certain ecchi type and balance that just makes it... awkward to watch. No to that.

Yay. Another user who watched Lou. Yes, the main protagonists aren't overly dumb. For instance, Most battles in LoU require strategies for the main characters to win against their opponents. This indicates that they have high quality brains to win those battles. They only act dumb for the sake of humor.

There is a limit on amount of ecchi moments I can take in an anime. If they are handled in form of exaggeration, that's where I lose interest to keep watching that anime.

      Some anime I like

I have so many favorite anime shows, I personally prefer a lot of the psychological horror and reverse harem ones but I will explain these three below:

      • Diabolik Lovers: Very enjoyable anime for me. Luscious and seductive. Very attractive humanoid vampires who's crave for this sweet filled addiction is something I can relate to and accept. Subaru Sakamaki is my favorite character. (Opening Link: Click Here)
      • Ore-tachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai: Under the Innocent Sky: I enjoy the ecchi driven aspect of it. I also love how there is an underlying connection between the characters formulates into something of a main significance to the whole plot. It's a very hard show to actually understand what it's about since there is a lot thrown in at once, especially at the beginning. (Opening Link: Click Here)
      • One Punch Man: Characters and fighting scenes are lovable. Genos and Saitama seem to be nice individuals I would want to accompany myself with. (Opening Link: Click Here)

Tail of the Moon: Who doesn't love ninjas and romance?

      Ouran Highschool Host Club
: It never ceases to be entertaining. Plus it goes further than the anime.

      Favorite Anime Movies:

      Wolf Children: I cry everytime.

Spirited Away: It was the first Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki film I ever saw as a child.

      Heidi!

      ep4-4.jpg

I read the book long before watching the anime(created by Isao Takahata and Miyazaki). I liked the book (here's my take on it - an elaborate essay I wrote long back), but more than the book, I loved what Calpis Theater made So much so, I cry like a baby each time I watch the episode in which her depression becomes apparent. It is painful to see how she longs to go back to the Alps and how much she misses home, her grandfather, Peter, and pretty much everyone back home. I watch Heidi once every year (it's a ritual of sorts. I've been at it for over a decade now - yes, I'm a die-hard Heidi fan ). The book didn't evoke as many emotions as the show did and for that, I'm forever indebted to Takahata and Miyazaki. I love Miyazaki, but Takahata is my favorite. Each movie of his has made me cry, no exceptions. From Only Yesterday to My Neighbors the Yamadas, there's not one movie of his that hasn't made me all emotional. I totally LOVE Takahata

      Uzumaki

I think I've read everything Junji Ito and it's really hard to choose, but I love the whole spiral obsession element. I bought a hardcover collection of Uzumaki in April for my boyfriend and I still don't think he's read it (how hard is it to read a comic book?). Junji Ito also got me into Kazuo Umezz and other classic horror mangaka recently.

      I am a Hero

Hands down my favorite ongoing manga. Has forever altered the zombies that appear in my nightmares though, I liked it when they didn't talk.

Number 3 is probably Berserk, although I haven't kept up with it as much because it's constantly on hiatus. Definitely read it if you haven't, but skip the anime adaptations because the best thing about it is the artistic detail in the manga. Skip if you can't stomach gratuitous violence and adult content, because it is excessively so.

Attack on Titan: There's anime and there's Attack on Titan. It's just epic in every way. I love the characters, music and the story and obviously the animation is pure eyecandy. Eren and Mikasa are a little cliche but I don't care about it that much tbh. Armin's easily my favorite character.
Clannad: The first season is not as good as the second, but I still like it. But I LOVE the second season. It hits in the feels and that's what I want from an anime. The love story of Nagisa and Tomoya is so great. The second season also shows how live actually continues after high school and that's a good thing in the sea of all the high school animes.
Your Lie in April: This anime is just so good in every way. I love the story, characters, music... I love Kousei's story. The ending's so sad in a good way. It's just epic.

Edit/// I also want to say that the movie A Silent Voice is a recent favorite too! It's soo great but I didn't count it to the list as it's a movie. Your Name is good too.

      Some of my favorites:

Hunter x Hunter: Story about a boy who wants to become a "hunter" like his father. The story explodes into something amazing after the hunter exam arc. All the characters are amazing. This anime makes it to my top 3 easily.

One-punch man: I heard about the manga way before the anime, but the premise didn't seem interesting to me. After people so heavily praised it, I decided to read more than the first manga chapter. Well, I ended up not sleeping that night. I read all of it in one go. The anime is a good adaptation. Lots of flashy fights and funny moments. 10/10

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood There was FMA anime before this, but you don't need to watch that. Jump into this one. The story is concise and amazing. There's a lot of mystery, cool characters, tragedy and some great fights.

That's my top 3, but there are a million other shows I love. I'll mention a few more. They are in a descending order of awesomeness:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Space Dandy, My Hero Academia, Bleach, Naruto, Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop, Steins;Gate, Death Note, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, ERASED (Boku dake ga Inai Machi)

Gurren Lagann and Space Dandy in particular have affected my dreams a lot, and what I wish to dream about.

I'm generally not really into anime but the few ones that I like are Berserk, Rage of Bahamut, Rurouni Kenshin, Dragonball Z, and a few more.
