      I've watched a whole bunch of movies with casey affleck and christian bale in them, I gotta say they really sucked in all of them.
      Tower Heist moderately funny, not well executed. The heist itself was cool but it was more as if everything just went there way and there was none of those moments were you're like "that was fucking genuis"

      Out of the furnace Now this is a prime example of movie that spends 2 hours trying to build characters that are so weak you forget them by the end of the movie. Literally I just spent the whole movie being absolutely annoyed at what a terrible role affleck had to play. Can't even remember there names.

      Gone Baby Gone was a great movie until the entire ending. It was deep and meaningful in a way, but it's been a while since I've been that disappointed in a character who suddenly does a moral backflip.
      Spoiler for Big Spoiler for people who wish to share my disappointment!:

      Limitless awesome movie based on a ridiculous premise. I liked how the whole movie flowed despite some worrying plot holes. I guess story-wise it may not be great, just like jumper it's a movie you watch for the thought "wow imagine if that was possible"

      American Hustle Christian Bale and the guy from limitless both sucked in this movie. I found it boring and hard to follow, I'm sure some will like it.

      American Psycho I actually kind of enjoyed this movie while it was playing, but the best moment is when you start thinking about it afterwards. It almost seems like a shoddy horror at times, but the pervading message is awesome. The 80's yuppies scene was so superficial that a psychopath fitted in perfectly and efficiently. Despite being a a deeply rooted psychopath with a weird tendency to tell everyone about who he murdered, no one even notices. He gets a great apartment, a girlfriend and a high job position.
      I really loved how by the end of the movie it became clear that christian bale wasn't the true psycho, the American yuppie scene was. The entire lives of every yuppie in the movie is dominated by living a superficial ideal to be the best, be friends with everyone and be outgoing and fun. Yet none of them were, no one knew each other truly. In a way everyone in the movie showed self inflicted psychopathic traits.

      Saw Captain Phillips two nights ago. Now that is a damn good movie, and I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it. It truly captures how intense the situation of the movie was in real life when it actually happened back in 2009.

      But I'm A Cheerleader. While the plot can be considered cliche, it's a wonderful movie. Plus younger Natasha Lyonne is the cutest.

      Just finished watching Ghost in the Shell. Watching one of the inspirations for the Matrix was rewarding enough, but in this movie such questions are presented in a more radically way than in his spiritual sequel (s), and left me even more introspective

      The Matrix is based off The Invisibles. Where did you hear it drew influence from GITS? Maybe the sequels since they went a different direction from The Invisibles. The trilogy would have been a lot better if it just kept ripping off The Invisibles though.

      I see only slight similarities between GITS and The Matrix (the first film). Barely enough to qualify GITS as an influence. The sequels definitely looked influenced though, in that they bring up really dumbed downed versions of the same questions.

      Erm, the Wachowski Brothers said themselves :p? Along with other elements of the production team, etc.

      Hiryu says: Which Anime inspired you the most and why?
      WachowskiBros: We liked Ghost in the Shell and the Ninja Scroll and Akira in anime. One thing that they do that we tried to bring to our film was a juxtaposition of time and space in action beats.
      Source.

      Also:

      Japanese director Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell was a strong influence.[17] Producer Joel Silver has stated that the Wachowski brothers first described their intentions for The Matrix by showing him that anime and saying, "We wanna do that for real".[18][19]
      It's kinda hard to miss GITS aspects that got carried off to matrix, both in terms of philosophy and visual effects, so you're seriously confusing me right now lol.

      - Jacking into the matrix procedure;
      - The "green letters";
      - philosophical questions;
      - robots vs humans;
      - residual self-image (somewhat);
      - Hacking

      Had no clue regarding The invisibles though, so I'll take a look at that, thanks

      I finally got around to Prometheus last week and yeah, it was pretty weak. It did, however, spur me to re-watch all of the Alien movies, none of which I've seen in over a decade. I'm only halfway through number 3, but the first two (and number 3 so far) were just brilliant. The Giger designs in the first one were gorgeous and Sigourney Weaver was genuinely compelling through all three. I enjoy the 'futures past' vibe of a spaceship loaded with vector drawings on tiny CRTs, too

      The second one I saw throughout my childhood, probably mostly on cable, but I still didn't realize until this viewing just how influential that movie was on pop culture and especially video games. Come to think of it, the late '90s internet (such as it was) was plastered with Aliens references. I had a chestburster avatar in one of the primitive "chatroom" sites of that era.

      I also believe the Matrix was heavily inspired by the book Neuromancer (which is a great read). It really set the ground for many of the elements in the Matrix, and was pretty much the first to do the whole 'jacking in to the matrix' concept, way back when.

      Also, I just watched "Enter the Void", last night...and wtf. It was quite a mindf'ck.

      Since I had been writing, that I had a phase of looking for movies around motives of psychiatry and psychology - I got to mention the wonderful "A Beautiful Mind" part docu with himself speaking, too - part re-enactment of the life of John Nash, famous mathematician with a nobel prize and a psychotic condition.
      I love this one.
      So - but I had told somebody now about some of the movies, I watched - and I got this really great tip: "Filth" written and directed by Jon. S. Baird.
      No romanticism here - very realistic movie - not nice, from the manic side of affairs. At the same time darkly funny - fantastic movie.
      "A bipolar, bigoted junkie cop manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure promotion and win back his wife and daughter."
      Yupp - got to be enough - oh - and I love his hallucinations of his psychiatrist - ever more surreal - and that picture!!
      Clever guy, seems.

      The influences you are talking about are more superficial than anything. For one, GITS isn't really robots vs humans, I mean the antagonist is an AI but his goal isn't to enslave humanity. All you really got that holds up is green letters and plugging cords into the body. The Invisibles is where the plot and characters of the Matrix come from.

      It should be enough that the W. Brothers mentioned it as an inspiration, but you're assuming inspiration regarding something means you got to pick certain elements from it and splatter them into your movie. The philosophy and the theme of GITS is clearly presented in the matrix, and when I say robots vs humans, I'm referring to lifeform ideology, not "dispute": you can see this very clearly when neo and smith talk, the merovingian meeting, etc etc. So if you can't see there's more than the "Jack in", then....can't help you.
      Like Oneironaut zero said, neuromancer can also be considered a huge inspiration (think cyberpunk theme), which only adds to argument that matrix isn't just "based on" the Invisibles. Although I haven't seen it (but it seems that it has indeed a huge influence on the matrix, so I get your point), it still stands as merely one among the several sources of inspiration, being GITS another one....And I don't even know why I'm discussing this

      Ah - thanks - will check Enter the Void out - and yeah - when I watched the Matrix - Neuromancer came to my mind first.
      I actually even felt a tiny, tiny bit disappointed about it not being as deep as Neuromancer or Snow Crash and other such books I read back then. And I love Ghost In A Shell, too - but wouldn't have seen the connection on my own. But them citing it as an inspiration-source (not blue-print) - does make a lot of sense.
      Whatever - no doubt - maybe the best science-fiction movie I ever saw (unfortunately, I got to also say) - good ol' Matrix!

      Watched Bad Grandpa yesterday. I don't think I've ever laughed so much before in my life! It's so great because it's not only funny to begin with, but they filmed the movie with a lot of non-actors. It was like a movie happening in real life, and it was hilarious.

      Last film I saw was The Dark Knight Rises (I decided to watch it again about 2 days ago), I honestly think Christopher Nolan is the best director out there atm. Apart from that I watched Bad Grandpa on my ipad a few days ago, great movie, had me in stitches!

      Oh man, you could check out my Letterboxd account for this stuff. Anyone else here have an LB account?

      My last film was the Detective Conan film "The 14th target". It was a rewatch and I still enjoyed it a lot.
      I havn't seen every Detective Conan movie yet, but this one is my favorite so far. I'm just a sucker for movies that have a rather small group of people end up in a place isolated from the outside and one after another becomes the victim of a mysterious unknown killer.

      Great tip!
      That's just soo much dream come true for nootropicists in the first third of the movie - and they make it very enticing indeed..
      From the start - he takes what he can get - can't see the moral turnaround, actually ..wink.gif

      Agreed on American Hustle by the way - and I agree on liking American Psycho, too, been a while since I saw it.

      While 'Jumper' was sort of nice enough for me to watch it completely - completely different level - more a teen love flick - but I see, what you mean - the phenomenon as such as the thing, which carries the movie.
      Limitless has just the massively better idea and much, much better execution.

      Watched Robocop. Absolutely loved it, great remake. Wont be long before they actually have machines like that in the near future.

      Just saw Thor: The Dark World. It was pretty good I'd say.

      Even Dwarfs Started Small (1971)
      Very, very weird. To make it simple: The film ended with an especially small guy laughing maniacally at a very confused shitting camel and telling it to press hard. That camel was the only creature in the whole thing I could relate to.

      My full thoughts

      I've just seen Beginners (2011). It's a drama (based on a true story) starring Ewan McGregor as an introverted man whose father, a 75 year old widower, "comes out" and lives his new gay life to the full.

      Spoiler for Beginners (2011):

      It moves along at a gentle pace but draws you in if you give it a chance. Christopher Plummer won an Oscar for his performance, but it's his dog that steals every scene it has in the film.
