Keep a notebook handy. Tell yourself before going to bed some things to look out for... like repeatedly tell yourself that if a particular set of circumstances come about, this will tell me that I am dreaming.
For examply, you could tell yourself, or program yourself in a manner of speaking, by, before going to bed, repeatedly telling yourself that something happens, then you will visualize a flag popping up in front of you saying "hello, I am dreaming. This is a dream". What that "something" is depends on what you decide, based on your style of dreaming the types of things you encounter in sleep.
For me, one of my flags pop up if I ask someone a question, to which I do not already know the answer, then I notice that my brain stumbles on trying to answer the question, and a flag comes up and says "ah ha!", then I know I am dreaming and I am then able to exert some control or at least gain more awareness of my dream.
I should state that this is all based on past experience with lucid dreaming... I haven't had lucid dreaming very often in the past few years and I gave up dream control, although I'm trying to get back into it but it is difficult because of certain medications I am on.
