I think your mind got hold of the image of a cage and imposed the logical restraints of being caged upon you.
This sort of logical sabotage happens to me a lot, and it's something I've been working on because though I know better, I still let myself get cornered by my expectations of reality. When we're in a situation that we weren't expecting and it throws us out of our comfort zone, we often respond by making things difficult for ourselves via getting uptight.
Because you mentioned claustrophobia, it's apparent that the situation made you uncomfortable. Remind yourself you're dreaming and there is no reason to get worked-up. Sometimes getting out of a situation that has you "stuck" can be as simple as floating yourself upward and out of the situation into a different scene (and hoping your mind doesn't play silly buggers with you by creating a ceiling!)
