What you did does indeed sound like a WILD - going straight into a dream from an awake state, without losing awareness.
It seems strange that you experienced the dream as a memory, rather than directly. I've always actually been in my dreams, and remembering them without experiencing them seems unusual to me. So to answer your question, it is possible to actually "be there."
Difficulty controlling your dreams entirely is quite normal. Even those with many lucid dreams under their belt can have difficutly getting everything to go the way they want it to. It takes practice and a few tricks to get good control, and a lot depends on the individual, and even on your current mental state. Sometimes I'll have a dream where I can do almost anything, and other times it's all I can do to excercise my own free will.
