      Lucid dreaming and therapy

I just started therapy for my anxiety, which several of you are aware of. I had my first session with my psychiatrist today. When I told him that I spend a lot of time online, he asked me what I do when I'm online. I told him that I'm now spending much of my time on a community dedicated to lucid dreaming (DV ). He hadn't heard of lucid dreaming before! I explained what it is to him, and he was very interested, and seemed surprised that no one had told him about lucid dreaming before. We actually ended up talking about it for quite some time, and he said that my lucid dreams should be great to use to learn to deal with anxiety. I have actually been doing this some already, by facing every fear or unpleasantness that I meet in my lucid dreams, instead of avoiding and waking myself up. He told me that that was what he would have suggested, but he admitted to not knowing anything about lucid dreams, or using dreams as therapy in this way. Before I left, he told me that he would very much like to talk about this more during the next session. That will be in two weeks.

Have any of you guys talked to any kind of therapists before about lucid dreams? Did they know anything about it? I'm just curious, because my psychiatrist had not heard about lucid dreams before, and he didn't know about any Norwegian therapists that use them for therapy. And have any of you actually used lucid dreams in any form of therapy, or know someone who has?

I understand if no one wants to talk about it, but I'm just wondering.

You should ask him how much he gets paid. Maybe you'll have a future in the psychicatric field, since you're obviously more advanced than he is!

Nah, I'd love to talk to a professional therapist about LD's, though. I'd love to hear, in depth, with someone in the psychiatric field has to say about them. The only thing I've used them for, that has anything to do with therapy, is learning to face fear of nightmares by actually staying in there and dealing with them.

Keep us updated on what your therapist has to say about LD's, the more you talk to him!

I know how much I pay him. LOL, I'd be a lousy therapist.

I overcame nightmares when I was a kid, using lucid dreams.

And I will keep you updated.

Years ago I had about 8 sessions with a hypnotherapist (it was to help with stress). She would record our sessions so that I could replay them at home and she gave me some great suggestions on relaxation. I mentioned on my last session that I lucid dreamed and was having trouble with recall due to the stress. She actually knew about lucid dreaming and on the last tape she made for me she gave me the suggestion that I will remember my dreams.

I forgot totally about that tape til just now.. I really need to blow the dust off that tape and give it a listen.

I'm going to therapy right now, to a psychologist. I've mentioned lucid dreaming to her and she knew what it was but asked me to explain to her again to make sure we were on the same level.

My explanation was exactly what she thought it was, but I never asked her if she has had any lucid dreams. I think she also mentioned I was the first person that knew about and talked about lucid dreaming to her.

On my sessions, she touches on the subject of lucid dreaming when we're talking about a topic where I might get something out from lucid dreaming. My dream recall had been really low for a long time though, so there wasn't much I could do. This past week I've had a new surge in motivation for dreaming, so my recall is real good again and hopefully my (extremely long) dry spell will be over soon.

Anyway... I'm staring to ramble on here. lol. My point is: my psychologist had heard about lucid dreaming before.

I actually started working on lucid dreaming because I believed it would have theraputic effects. I talk to both my counselor and psychiatrist about LDing all the time. I acutally used LDing to wean myself off of a psychiatric medicine for nightmares associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The post about that is here:

      http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=49052

Even though I have nearly reached my goal of getting off of that one medicine AND beating the nightmares, I continue to find theraputic ways to use lucid dreaming. I deal with fears, handel stresses, and work through problems. For me, lucid dreaming has allowed me to be happier, calmer, and better functioning than I thought would be possible.

My psychiatrist actually talked to me about LDing long before I was interested as a way to deal with overwelming nightmares. She didn't call it lucid dreaming, but she said that many people learn to become aware that they are dreaming, and that helps them confront the nightmares.

My counselor had never heard of LDs, but has been very supportive and curiose about my progress.
