Recently, I started getting into lucid dreaming, and for the last week I've been faithfully performing reality checks, including trying to breathe through a pinched nose, checking a watch, and trying to push my finger through my palm. My question is, how do you deal with performing a reality check in public? Some are more discreet than others, but sometimes it can look odd to pinch one's nose multiple times in an hour. (I usually cover it up by wiping my mouth, or pretending to sneeze). Any other ideas for doing an RC in a subtle way?

You can do it all in your head. Look at the people around you and make sure you know who they are and what they are doing, and make sure it makes sense for them to be there (like, any dead people, any people from one part of your life showing up in another context, etc.) Try to remember what led up to the present moment and make sure your memory is OK. Try to imagine what would happen if you did something really weird, like jump up on the table or take your clothes off. IRL you will probably be restrained (well hopefully I should say), but in a dream you just might do it. Make sure every one is acting in an appropriate way and dressed appropriately.

Just some ways I do RC's in meetings, crowds, etc. because being around a lot of people is a DS for me.

Kind of amusing too and makes a boring situation more fun.

My RealityCheck of choice is simply looking at my hand. This is definitely discreet, and you can easily look at your hand in public without looking weird.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I'll definitely use these methods, because I need to RC much more than I currently do.

Just RC anyway! Looking a bit stupid is indeed worth it, if it increases your lucid-dreams

I just do the nose-plug. I don't care who sees. xD

And looking at my hands is not a viable RC for me, because my hands never look weird in dreams. I look at them in dreams to stabilize, actually.

Whenever I remember to RC (not often ), I just carefully analyse anything that is happening to me... my teacher giving back a test and setting homework... is that a normal thing to do? has she done it before? My friend talking to me... is what he's saying normal? Does he look normal?

I keep on doing this until I know it's not a dream. Unfortunately I do it so rarely that it has hardly any impact on my dreaming...

    Good luck

Same. In fact today was the first time I did it without any cues. I just raised my hand and tried to breath through my pinched nose. Unfortunatly it failed, but I feel I"ve made a breakthrough.
I usually try to combine two methods, but the most acidental one for me in dreams is digital clocks, they almost always spell something instead of tell the time. Good Luck .
I had a strange dream last night...

Err, what is more discreet than looking at your watch. For some people, it is weird or changes on first glance, but no body will think "look at that weirdo, looking at his watch TWICE!" Or just cover it with your finger. But if you yell AM I DREAMING, and jump into the air really high then you might look ... a bit silly. Moonbeam's advice MAY work, but it is probably not a good idea. Your mind will rationalize things in your dream very quickly.

    Thats too funny!

Yeah, if you wear a watch go with that RC, I myself use the nose plugging one...

...I have yet for someone to go "zomgwtf are you doing?!?!?!"

Well people don't ask you 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING' because that's rude. They may still think it's weird

The nose plugging can be done to make it look totally normal. If you are doing vice grip style like you are about to jump in a pool... then it may get a strange look or two. But some people just scratch their nose normally like that... so its not too weird.

    I guess I didn't think about that...

They'd probably give a look though.

Not if you do it the way people do it naturally all the time...
