Yup, all good advice. My personal list is slightly different, but I've also noticed that when I go a long time in a dry spell I'm forgetting one of those five things.
Ok, I recently began thinking about a way to help noobs (and me) to have more LDs, I'm not talking about new ways of induction just a small 5 item list of things if your not doing you should begin doing and stick with (if your wanting LDs)
1) keep a dream journal.
--I know everyone has told you this from day one, and its still true, always no matter what write down something in the morning (be it 5 pages or 5 words)--
2) always sleep at least 8 hours a night (and keep a slightly steady sleep schedule)
--in other words always try to go to bed 8 1/2-8 hrs before you have to get up, the truth is, more sleep means more vivid logical dreams which in turn means more lucidity (so yes, if you slept 12 hrs a night you would have a way higher chance of getting lucid, but this is unhealthy and makes your day feel like you didn't sleep at all)--
3) always take at least 2 minutes as your laying in bed (before you sleep) to think about lucid dreaming and what your going to do in the event that you become lucid that night (and always think of it in terms of what you are going to do, not "what I might do if I can get lucid")
--think of a place you want to go you something you want to do, imagine it for a little while then go to sleep--
4) just before you go to sleep think for at least 30 seconds about FILDing.
--you wake up at least 3 times a night but usually go back to sleep. if you think about FILDing and make it a task for you to do in the event that you wake up, then you up your chances of LDing exponentially every night--

5) Reality check often.
--reality checks aren't supposed to be a task you do, what they are is you checking to see if at that moment everything your perceiving is actually a dream that had been fooling you into believing it was reality, so don't go "oh, I haven't done a reality check in awhile. **vacantly looks at hand hoping no one sees him doing so** well that's done, **forgets that he just did a reality check in 2 seconds**" that's the wrong way to do it, what your doing shouldn't be a task, it should come out of curiosity from something you've just seen or heard. example:
I'm at work and my boss looks at me strangely. I think: "wtf, I haven't done anything and I don't think there's anything on my face" then I look down at my hand not really caring if anyone sees me or not (though still not looking like a psychopath) "reality check says this is reality, but that look was pretty weird" looks at watch "hmm guess I did something wrong to piss him off"
that's a reality check, your actually checking to see if your current situations are caused by your subconscious and not by reality, not just because you have to, but because a stimulus has triggered it.
anyway there's the five steps, if you do that every night and day then
I guarantee you'll have more LDs than your having now or your money back. I'll even pay for shipping, so come on, what do you have to lose? but your acne. </messagefromproactivecommercial>
no but really, do this and have more LDs
(also you might want to check out the link in my sig for when you get into your LD)

Thanks! As a "noob"I really appreciate this simple little list. Making the point about RC not just some job to do, but actually testing your reality was wonderful.. It really helped me get that back into a proper perspective - thanks!

sweet I will try this.![]()
I lately haven't been doing this (and therefore haven't been LDing), but when I do do this (minus FILD, I don't really get the FILD thing), I do LD pretty often, so good advice.
What's FILD? A lot of the links in the dreamviews.com for tutorials are dead.
Very helpful indeed, thank you Master Billybob![]()
I think I prefer the term Newbie... though I am not a newbie anymore.
FILD= finger induced lucid dream (moving fingers slightly and reality checing every minute or so...)
I personally think that I have gotten lazier with my dream journal.
Hehehehe, keep trying for that raise!!! -Stoatlooks at watch "hmm guess I did something wrong to piss him off" [/b]
First WILD on 6th of August, 2006!
I don't remember ever waking up in the middle of the night, if I did I would use FILD, but I am pretty sure I sleep soundly though the night.

Wow how do my posts keep coming back to life?
nice that its still helping "newbies" though

I would be able to do all 5 if I knew how to do a FILD... I know a FILD is finger induced lucid dream but there are no links on FILD that I can see![]()

Me. What happens is I someone asks a question. I think, oh, Billybob's post can help you, so I look up your topic to get a link. Meanwhile I decide to browse some of your other topics. I find one that is helpful/interesting, and as I have a question (or it's just really great), I make a reply asking the question/giving a compliment. So that is how.![]()
Thanks for all the tips.
I especially like the explanation of RC's. I knew it didn't make much sense to just RC when you think of it. Now I know to do it when I notice strange things.
Thanks again

Cool, this could be the 5 Commandments of Lucid Dreaming.
You shell keep a dream journal.
You shell sleep at least 8 hours
You shell contemplate LD before you fall asleep
You shell think about FILD right before you fall asleep
You shell do an RC when something strange happens
A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service
and compassion are the things which renew humanity.

I think that is always the most important thing...in your first attempts at LDing...I haven't been doing that lately, guess thats why I haven't ld'd in about 3 or 4 days.
I haven't been able to do it for a while, I have been thinking of other distressing things in RL...hmm, I will have to remember to do this more often!
wow looks pretty useful, I have been getting weak at the rc's i guess
