      Dream Journal and whatnot

I started my dream journal, i just find myself having trouble remembering. I set my alarm clock to wake me up during my latter REM periods, is this the best time?
I also find that the dreams become clearer to me when i have my eyes shut when i wake up, how do i write in my journal sucessfully without having the dream fade? Any tips will help

Auto suggestion works wonders for me. All I do before I sleep is tell myself that I will remember my dreams when I wake up. Or I will tell myself that I will wake after a dream. Another thing to help is to try to wake gradually. Don't just jolt out of bed right away, but wake with your eyes closed and focus on that dream feeling. I also find as I am writing my dreams down, I remember more. I hope that helps.

edit: I missed the spot where you said you wake up with your eyes closed, so just lay like that for a couple of moments, the dream will come back to you.

Then go over the dream in your head with your eyes closed until you are sure you will be able to remember when you open your eyes. And remember, this is the nature of things, you are writing in the journal to increase your memory, it will get better, even if it is hard now.

I use a mini dictation machine to record my dreams. This is less
disruptive to my sleep and I can keep my eyes closed while recording
      my dreams.
On awakerning I then replay them and transfer them to my proper dream
      journal.
