If an RC fails, it means it did it's job and you're lucid now. The other thing is do more than one RC...and do and RC that you know will work everytime. That silly nose RC never works for me. Read something twice.
Well, I've had some great success recently with lucid dreaming (ended a dry spell with back to back lucids), but last night I would've had my 3rd night in a row with a lucid except there was a problem. My favorite reality check failed (the nose plug RC).
In the dream I was in school and the teacher handed out a paper that was about lucid dreaming and I said to myself, "there's no way this is real... why would we be learning about lucid dreaming?" so I did the nose plug reality check and I couldn't breathe through my nose. I was disappointed in the dream because I thought for sure I was dreaming.
Why do RC's fail sometimes?
To prevent this should I do multiple reality checks from now on to double check (literally)?

Oops, I guess my wording was wrong....
Well, by failed I meant it didn't work correctly.
That's the first time the nose RC hasn't worked like it should for me. I should've done the double reading thing because the paper my teacher handed out was changing colors and text non stop. It was cool but I was to dumb to notice I was dreaming.

Haha. Yeah that happens to me ALL the time. I"ll even have someone come up to me and say "what do you care, since this is all a dream anyway?" and I'll totally miss the sign. We've all got a lot of learning to do. But in general I would highly recommend that you use more than one RC for this very reason. Basically the way I see it is, if you're in a place where you feel like you should RC...then you're probably dreaming anyway.
You know what I mean? Cause think about it...if something happens where it's just too weird to be real, so you do an RC...maybe start assuming you ARE dreaming. I've gotten to the point where without RCing I can tell whether or not I'm dreaming, so maybe this is only a good idea for me. lol. Well in any case multiple RCs is always the best idea.

Ok I'll try it out.
Thanks for your help.

Yeah last night I remember doing that same RC, except it didn't work the first time. But somehow I KNEW I was dreaming, and I tried it again. The second time I could still breathe through my nose, though it was kinda shallow and strange feeling. I guess I'm just so used to doing RCs in real life that my real life response is now expected in my dreams...
Yep. That's precisely why. You begin to expect it. That's why I'm not entirely into the whole concept of routinely RCing anyway, which is probably why I don't often remember to do them, yet still have DILDs. Wow that was a run-on sentence. Anyway I figure lucid living is a better alternative. It works better for me anyway.

The nose RC, while probably the most reliable, is not entirely accurate. I'd recommend getting into the habit of not only doing two or three RCs instead of just one, but also genuinely asking yourself if you are dreaming.
I do the - 'think back through what I've done today' RC, last night in my dream I thought - am I dreaming, and was just trying to think over what I'd done that day when a DC interrupted me with some stupid question, which distracted me from my RC and I forgot all about it... dam DC's I'm sure they do it on purpose.
I always do my RC's in pairs to make sure.
I do the nose-plug-and-breathe RC, and I also try to stretch my finger. IRL, I can feel the knuckle straining when I pull on the end of my finger, in a dream I can either pull really hard and it doesn't feel like anything, or my finger will stretch (think gumby).
The nose RC rarely fails for me. Maybe it could fail if your real nose was completely stuffed up or something.
That's exactly what I do most of the time. I often do the lucid living, but as a reality check I just think back on how I got where I am at this very moment. In a dream I generally materialize somewhere with know true awareness or reason as to why and how I got where I am.

Failed rc's happens to me alot aswell but it's always through the time rc, a rc that never fails for me is the finger counting rc.
