One really good tip you should remember is don't be a pessimist. No matter how many nights in a row you don't seem to make progress expect to make alot the next night and tell your self you will.
During the day practice RCs (reality checks) and Mnemonics - forming a real habit out of this is probably the most solid way to have LDs because you'll be doing it so often in real life that you will probably become aware when you do it in dreams.
One of my fav. new techniques is mnemonics subconscious naming one (in this forum). You can find a link to it from my First LD experience in my sig.
Don't get upset if you don't progress every night because if you're like the rest of the average non-naturals, you wont.
Don't get ahead of your self. Concentrating on only the next step ahead of you will help you get there faster then progress forward. This means don't be thinking about all the experiences you could be having if you were a LD expert because you aren't there yet-Think solely about becoming lucid first.
So at first just worry about gaining lucidity then maintaining it-most 1st timers realize it's a dream and excite them selves out of it. This happened to me my twice in my first night after reading about LDs then I didn't have any progression for 3 months (1 month barely trying).
Most LDers complain that their LDs aren't long enough so at first just let the dream flow and try to stay lucid as long as possible while just observing the dream passively. After becoming lucid just start moving in any way possible - start jumping or running. This is supposed to help maintain lucidity.
Get comfortable in the dream while asserting confidence that this is your dream then try and issue mental/verbal commands to control the dream and let your imagination be the limit. Intent is as important here as it is when you're telling your self you will LD during mnemonics. If you don't really mean your commands most likely they wont occour. Or you could just not be experienced enough for your control to work completely.
Search the site, look in the tutorial sections or in the different board sections about these techniques: MILD, WBTB, RC, Dream Sings, spining, and false awakenings. Also make sure you know the basics, like dream journals for increased recall, by reading the main dreamview sites' pages.
My first real LD took 3 months though it varies for everyone. See my sig for some of the conditions for my first LD. Welp this turned into one hell of a rant, hope it helps you out. Anyone feel free to correct or add to anything I said.
