Yep. Unless you're sleep deprived you probably will not dream immediately once you fall asleep. Most people like to wait 5 hours or so using the WBTB method. Although some of us do WBTB in the morning after we wake naturally.
Whatever you decide to do WBTB is your friend. You should also try Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dream (DEILD) and take naps to increase your chances. Here's an overview of the different induction techniques.
Keeping a dream journal will greatly improve your recall. I'm actually the opposite and remember dreams better without an alarm clock, so don't think that the alarm clock is the only way.
