Sleeping outside the covers might help your awareness level

I would like to share a revelation I had during my time being. It came to me when (Ok, no more impersonating Smith from this point on) I was thinking back on the best WILD experiences I've had.

I discovered that when I fall asleep outside of the covers fully clothed(I think both times it was also with the tv or the lights on) I tend to wake after 4 or 5 hours of sleep. But when I wake up I wake up much more aware than I generally do. I become instantenously(sp?...like I give a crap) completely awake, with no feeling of groggyness or such whatsoever. Both of those times I tried a WILD and got the best results I've ever had.

I thought I would share this with you for you to try it and see if it works for you to. I think this happens due to the fact that, eventhough your mind is tired(causing you to fall asleep) the light and noise and lack of comfort make you somehow stay aware while you are sleeping. I don't know if that made any sense at all, but I know that the times I've tried it I have had great results...
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

I know what you mean, Big Daddy (tee hee). I woke up at my house because I was cold, sleeping over the covers. When I went back to sleep, it was the closest I had to WILDing, and almost became lucid.

      hey..

the same thing happened to me the other day. I came home around 2:00 PM and I selpt on my bed fully clothed and I had an LD withing 2 hours of sleeping. I wasn't lucid for very long, but that still counts.

Update: I tried this technique on my days off and found out that even if I slept with the lights and tv off I would still wake up feeling very aware and sort of filled with energy when I slept outside the covers.

This new evidence rules out t.v. and light as definate factors and it appears the lack of comfort, and the breaking of habit, of sleeping outside the covers might be what causes this to happen.

Please feel free to try this someday and hopefully validate my hypothesis. Everyone is different so it would be nice to see if it checks out for more people....

P.S. Set an alarm clock for 5 hours after you fall asleep, in case you don't wake up on your own....

Heh, you Smith wannabe ! Well, I'm gonna have to try this, since I didn't have a lucid for quite a long time and I'm willing to try anything. Let's hope it'll work Why is "energy" so important to WILD ? If it is you could simply take a shower or wash your face instead of freezing your balls off

Well, Truthbearer, my favourite bearer of truth, I'll buy it. I will try your technique tonight. Clothes on, no covers, lights and TV off. I NEVER sleep above the covers, so this will definitely be a big change for me. I'll let you know tomorrow then how it pans out.

      Question: bra on or off?

Here, Here! This will be my first time sleeping outside the covers also. This sounds like it would work to. As to your question. I would say on, but probably a sports bra

Well crap, I tried it but at some point in the middle of the night I pulled the covers over myself. And not only did I awake with covers over me, but I had zero dream recall! How weird is that?!

Next time, I'll try it with all the blankets and sheets removed and hidden in the closet.

I managed to sleep above my covers, but god that was a horrible night. I was so umcomfortable. It might've been because It was a little hot and I was wearing all my clothes though.

I didn't get any Lucid dreams, but my dream recall went through the roof even though I've been neglecting my dream journal for a while to. I'll try this again tonight.

Wow!!!! I wrote this thread in May 3rd, and it has just flourished as of now!!!! Happy!!!!

Anyway, I am glad to see some of you are already getting results because of this technique. The other day I fell asleep inside the covers with the T.V on (fell asleep during the second showing of Conan!!! ). Anyway, I also woke up feeling pretty aware. This means that sleeping outside the covers with the t.v on is probably better than just sleeping outside the covers. Of course, it is also harder, but worth a try.

Anyway, keep on posting your results. If we get enough good results and all we might be able to make this an official method!!!! Kind of like something to use in combination with a WBTB method and WILD, for more enhanced and effective results!!!

Well, I've been successful the last two nights in remaining above the covers, but have been unsuccessful at getting to sleep...crap insomnia...

But as soon as my body gives out to exhaustion, I'll be passing out above those covers!

now see? if i hid the covers.. i would hunt them down in my sleep.. literally. If i'm uncomfortable, i usually sleepwalk (or have night terrors, i'm a bit confused between them). Yeah i like to be cool at night to get dreams.. if i'm too warm i have none.

And if i wake up cold, i am fully aware.

By the way opheliablue (is that screenname supposed to be a joke?? get it "I'll feel ya bluee"... nevermind...), truthbearer pmed me and told me he usually slept with his bra on.

This doesn't sound like Truthbearer's regular annoying topics. I'm gonna try this technique but I have a question. I have a bunk bed and I put covers around it to block out sunlight. Should I take that off? And also, fan on or off?

Hey, I think I know exactly what you mean about being more aware after sleeping with clothes on and on the cover.
I have never had a LD ( ) so I cant tell if its easier to have one while sleeping on the cover.
I will try this tonight, maybe I will get my first LD?

I don't live anywhere near the US...

Anyway, the way I see it, the heat/cold really has nothing to do with it. Sure it might make it more difficult to go to sleep if you're cold, but that still has nothing to do with the awareness level/results...
