I assume that would work in the same way as performing constant reality checks. I personally don't like critical state testing because I don't want lucid dreaming to interfere with my waking life (but then again, I'm on this forum); however, it's much easier to do than MILD or WILD. I'm guessing it will take quite a bit of time before checking the paper becomes habit for you, but then it should enter into your dreams. Just note that constant reality checks might work better than the piece of paper because you might answer "no" when you're dreaming. Good luck!
