Here is a suggestion based on the theory that you should train yourself to have the proper reaction at the proper time.
Do reality checks during the day, as often as you can, where you check reality. But, after checking reality, avoid telling yourself "I'm awake" or "not a dream." Instead, tell yourself "I am dreaming! I am lucid!" This (hopefully) plants the behavior in you to react in the proper way in your dream.
Then, follow up with a behavior that you would want to do in a dream, something that would promote becoming/maintaining lucidity. Such as, looking at everything around you, or checking your hands (how many fingers?), or snapping your fingers/rubbing your hands (which helped me keep focus while dreaming.)
You may want to do it in a way that does not attract too much unwanted attention in public.
Combine this practice with keeping a dream journal. Always keep a dream journal in your daily practice.
Good luck. There's lots of other material in the tutorials section.
